Chengguan new uniforms - Media Watch July 27 -- BONTV

Posted: 29 Jul 2012 08:05 PM PDT

Beautiful uniforms will not change the image of chengguan, or urban management personnel, for the better. Local chengguan in Xinhua County, Hunan Province, reportedly have decided to shell out 20000 yuan (US$ 3120) as an award to attract the public to design uniforms for them. Designers are required to come up with different styles for the four seasons. Chengguan uniforms are to be distinctive and different from those worn by police or security guards. Among today's law enforcement agencies in China, chengguan might be the most controversial for their constant conflicts with street vendors. Chengguan may not be wrong in all the cases, but their rudeness has indeed caused even bloody skirmishes. In fact, the public image of chengguan depends less on what they wear than on what they do. Handing out 20000 yuan as an award may not be a wanton waste of public money, but it can hardly make a difference in the reputation of chengguan.

Vice-head carried bodies trouserless - China Take July 27 - BONTV

Posted: 29 Jul 2012 07:42 PM PDT

Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode This rather odd search item stems from a video that spread online in the wake of the rainstorms in Beijing last weekend. The footage shows the vice-head of a police bureau leading rescuers to retrieve bodies from mudslides in the hard hit district of Fangshan. The officer first removes his trousers before stepping into the muddy ground, where the victims are lying. Then all the other officers and helpers do the same before they help to carry the corpses to dry ground. Some voices online have praised the high-ranking policeman for his hands on attitude while, inevitably, other more skeptical voices wondered how much was staged for the camera.
