Ep.20-China's Intangible Cultural Heritage -- BONTV

Posted: 25 Jul 2012 10:32 PM PDT

China has 36 UNESCO world heritage sites and masterpieces. The first site listed by UNESCO was Kuqu (昆曲), a once popular opera house during the 16thto 18thcentury, which went into decline during the late 20th century. Since Kuqu was listed by UNESCO in 2001, the area has prospered economically, and a greater number of travelers have gone off to learn about traditional Chinese opera in the area. In 2009, 22 additional sites were listed by UNESCO, but failed to raise the type of national attention that Kuqu received. China's cultural heritage also includes traditional legends, festivals, customs and beliefs. Many Chinese experts and folk artists don't just want to collect and document these art forms, but are making an effort to bring them back to life. Many local government bodies invest in local cultural heritage sites in order to protect and develop them as possible tourists' attractions. But, this all depends on whether the younger generation is willing to inherit local cultural traditions and whether or not the old legends and beliefs can move the hearts of a modern generation.
