China News Broadcast, July 23, 2012: Massive Damage After Beijing Flooding

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 11:04 PM PDT

In today's China news, Beijing was hit by heavy rains -- the worst in decades. Footage shows massive devastation and displacement with damages estimated at over $1.6 billion (USD). The low official death toll is raising questions about a cover up, and many fear the actual figure could be higher. Even as floodwaters raged, residents of Beijing pulled together in a show of solidarity. A group of volunteers, using weibo to communicate with each other, scoured the city, offering free rides to those who needed them. Today is the one year anniversary of the Wenzhou high-speed rail crash, though you wouldn't have been reminded of it by state-run media. A Chinese reporter says there is a ban on coverage of the crash, which killed at least 40 people, and injured nearly 200 others.a More toxic food found in China. This is the latest in a string of food safety problems in China since 2008. The ASEAN 10 Nations were not able to reach consensus over the ownership of the South China Sea last Friday. That's despite days of heated discussions. China has just upped the stakes in the dispute by installing a military garrison in Sansha city, a city which in itself is hotly disputed. Why China Vetoed the UN Resolution on Syria

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 10:51 PM PDT

As the fighting in Syria escalates, last week, China and Russia vetoed a UN Security Council resolution on Syria—for the third time. Although Russia is Syria's biggest ally, China doesn't have especially close ties with Syria. So why did the Chinese Communist Party choose to veto the resolution, at the expense of their soft power push in the West? And what does Syria have to do with the Party's number one priority? Jumping Off World's Highest Bridge, For Fun

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 10:42 PM PDT

Balinghe Bridge, the world's highest, is right here in Anshun City, part of southwest China's Guizhou province. It's nice to look at, but some people have now sought out a new perspective on the landmark. The 2012 China Anshun Balinghe Bridge Parachuting International Challenge, held this past Saturday, drew a field of 30 world-class parachute jumpers, including three female jumpers, from 15 countries. After jumping off the bridge, the parachute jumpers fell at speeds up to almost 60 miles per hour, before opening their parachute about three hundred feet from the ground. According to some experts, these speed and distance conditions leave barely enough time to properly orient oneself to make a landing. But it's all in good fun. This extreme sport is called "BASE jumping", with BASE standing for building, antennas, spans, and earth. "Spans" is a term for bridges, and "earth" refers to cliffs. With parachutes attached, the extreme sports enthusiasts in Guizhou managed to catapult themselves off of a very high span indeed, between two prime pieces of earth. China's CNOOC Has Agreed to Buy Canada's NEXEN for $15.1bn

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 10:37 PM PDT

China's offshore oil and gas giant CNOOC said on Monday it has agreed to acquire Canadian rival NEXEN for 15.1 billion dollars. The deal, if successful, would be China's biggest overseas takeover. The move is also in line with CNOOC's plans to expand its resources overseas. CNOOC said it would pay $27.50 cash per share, a 61 percent premium to Nexen's closing price in New York last Friday. Seven years ago, CNOOC dropped a bid for acquiring the US energy company, Unocal, due to intense political opposition in the US Canadian regulators can block the proposed deal if they do not see it to be within Canada's best interest. Toxic Baby Formula Found in Guangzhou, China

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 10:34 PM PDT

Chinese State media reported on Monday that shipments of baby formula contaminated with a cancer-causing toxin have been found. Health authorities tested five different types of milk products in Guangzhou, and all had excessive amounts of aflatoxin—a substance produced from mould or fungus. Two companies in the Hunan AVA Dairy Industry were manufacturing the formula with the brand name Nanshan Bywise. Products from Bright Dairy are also being tested. The products have been removed from shelves whilst under investigation. Last December another dairy, China Mengniu had to destroy large quantities of its milk that was tainted with aflatoxin. This is the latest in a sting of food safety problems in China since the 2008 tainted milk scandal that left at least six babies dead. Now iPhone apps that tell people all about the latest food scandals are all the rage scoring millions of hits and even crashing from overuse. China Ups the Stakes in the South China Sea Dispute

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 08:33 PM PDT

The Chinese regime has escalated the stakes in the South China Sea dispute. Despite a positive spin from the Indonesian Foreign Minister at the ASEAN Summit last Friday a resolution to the conflict has not been reached. Chinese authorities say the Paracel and Spratly chain of islands and ownership of the surrounding seas are at the root of the conflict. The White House meanwhile is urging for a regional code of conduct to prevent or resolve clashes. The Chinese regime has not welcomed the US input and says it's "meddling" in the region. US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, replied by saying (quote) "the US is a resident Pacific power." The Chinese regime has put more pressure by establishing a military garrison in its contentious newly created city of Sansha. Sansha has been established on "Woody Island" a part of the Spratley and Paracel group. Reuters reports Chinese State media saying the Sansha garrison is responsible for "national defense mobilization... guarding the city and supporting local emergency rescue and disaster relief" and "carrying out military missions." That action appears to be in conflict with China's pledge to work with ASEAN to safeguard regional peace. Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam and China all claim ownership of the region's Islands and territorial waters. Amidst Flooding, Beijing Residents Help Each Other

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 08:25 PM PDT

Even as floodwaters raged, residents of Beijing pulled together in a show of solidarity. Many found themselves stranded after torrential rains pelted the city over the weekend. Some were cut off at the airport. Others' cars were submerged. And still others simply found themselves stuck on whatever higher ground they could find. The city's taxi service -- nonexistent. That's when a group of volunteers, using weibo to communicate with each other, scoured the city, offering free rides to those who needed them. One user, going by the name Shuming, offered a ride, his apartment, food, and a change of clothes to anyone who needed it. The outpouring of support moved many. Weibo user 3D Budui wrote to one of the organizers, (quote) "You bring warmth to our life. The society needs everyone like you to become better. I'll start with myself in daily life." Beijing Submerged After Worst Floods In 61 Years

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 08:02 PM PDT

Torrential rains pounded Beijing on Saturday. According to state-run media, it was the worst seen in 61 years. Heavy flooding devastated the region. It caused well over a billion dollars in damage and forced mass evacuations. Some of the worst-hit areas are in Beijing's rural Fangshan district. Here is what Fangshan looked like after almost 19 inches of rain. Beijing released an official death toll of 37. But netizens were questioning the figure, with unconfirmed estimates on Chinese social media of hundreds dying in the floods. It is part of a general practice in China to mistrust official statistics put out by the state. Earlier this month, China analyst Chen Pokong said that officials tend to underestimate official death tolls, as their jobs are tied to the numbers. Chinese authorities are avoiding any major focus on the scale of the disaster. According to an internal memo from the Beijing Municipal Propaganda Department posted on China Digital Times, media reports on the rainstorms "must emphasize the power of human compassion over the elements." Much of the flooding is being blamed on Beijing's inadequate sewage system, which couldn't deal with the floodwaters. The modern sewage system fails to rival the ancient ditches of the Forbidden City. The historical site was bone dry after the floods while most other areas were submerged in water. Rita coached Tom for his accent in "The Terminal", and when she produced the huge hit "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", Tom was the office gopher. Couple number two are Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman. Our third couple today is Martin Sheen and Janet Templeton, who have been married an incredible 51 years this December. One of ten children, Martin almost died from a heart attack at age 39, and suffered from bouts of alcohol abuse, but their marriage has stood the test of time. Beijing Criticized for Ignoring Drainage: Storm Causes 37 Deaths

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 10:44 PM PDT

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com On July 21, Beijing experienced its strongest rainstorm in 61 years. The city is now full of stagnant water, and many people and vehicles were trapped by the water. Official media reported that the rainstorm has caused 37 deaths, with seven people missing. Serious issues have been exposed, such as a lack of rescue response from authorities, and a poor urban drainage system. Chinese media criticised that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) authorities only pay attention to city appearance in urban development, and ignore the construction of underground drainage facilities. It is a typical CCP act to "to brush up the outside." The average rainfall per hour during the storm was 170 mm. Over 20 highway bridges are standing in stagnant water. Traffic is disrupted and a lot of cars were submerged. 525 flights were cancelled, and the subway station at the airport is closed. Many travelers are stranded at the airport. Fangshan District has been seriously impacted. There were floods in the mountain areas, and the flood embankments were damaged. The river overflowed, and villages were trapped by flood water. Official media reported that up until July 23, 37 people had died, and seven are missing. The rainstorm has caused nearly 100 million yuan in damages, and nearly 10000 cars were damaged.
