An 18-year-old man who was charged with fabricating terrorist information was sentenced to one year and two months in jail on July 30 over a bomb hoax at Shanghai's Pudong International Airport.

According to Pudong New Area People's Court, the man, surnamed Pu, called the airport hotline on the night of April 28, claiming he had placed a bomb on flight CA406 from Shanghai to Chengdu. He demanded that airport authorities deposit 1 million yuan ($157,000) in his bank account.

The plane was searched and the flight was delayed for five hours until a false alarm was declared. Pu later admitted he had called the airport hotline twice using the Internet and had lied about the existence of a terrorist bomb.

Scientists make breakthrough discovery on eye disease

A five-country research team identified one of the causes of an eye disease known as Leber congenital amaurosis, one of the most common causes of inherited blindness in children.

The research team was led by the Casey Eye Institute Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory, the Beijing Genomics Institute and the No 1 Affiliated Hospital of the School of Medicine of Zhejiang University.

The study with the findings was published online in scientific journal Nature Genetics, reporting the genetic characteristics of some patients, and providing important evidence that support that mutations in a gene, known as NMNAT1, are a promising target for gene therapy.

LCA is an inherited retinal degenerative disease characterized by severe loss of vision at birth. It is estimated to occur in two to three out of 100,000 newborns.

Currently several studies are being done on the disease. Scientists found that it could result from mutations in at least 17 genes, all of which are necessary for normal vision and play important roles in the development and function of the retina.

More importantly, gene replacement therapy has been successful in animal models and in humans more studies are under way. However, the genetic characters for about 20 to 30 percent of the patients are still unknown.

In this study, the researchers sequenced the whole exome of an LCA patient with no previously identified mutations. They identified 2,460 previously unreported variants.

Qi Ming, chief scientist with the Beijing Genomics Institute, said that the study lays a solid foundation for understanding genetic characteristics of the disease and other related congenital blindness diseases and is an important step forward for developing new molecular diagnosis and gene therapy.

Moutai targets 'national wine' trademark

The application by Moutai for the trademark to be called the "national wine" has passed the first review, according to the Trademark Office of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce.

The result raised objections from other liquor enterprises in China, Beijing Times reported on July 30.

Xiao Zhuqing, an expert in the Chinese liquor industry, told the paper that if Moutai successfully acquired the trademark, other liquor enterprises would not be able to use "national" for their products anymore, so Moutai's act would harm the whole industry.

Wu dong, a lawyer with the Shanghai Huiye Law Firm, told the paper that registering "national wine" shows a hint of unfair competition and it's "ridiculous". Besides, drinking is harmful to people's health, so if Moutai uses "national wine" as its trademark, it could mislead consumers.

Tie Li, a famous Chinese liquor marketer, told the paper that Moutai's trademark has only passed the first examination, and it has brought up many objections, so the possibility of Moutai getting the trademark could be slim.

Flooding in Shaanxi province kills 11

Flooding caused by heavy rains has killed 11 people in Yulin, Shaanxi province in Northwest China and there is little relief in sight, with weather forecasters predicting more rain will hit the area from July 30 to Aug 1.

"From July 1 when the main flooding season started until July 29, 11 people were killed and 15 went missing in floods in Yulin," an official surnamed Liao with Shaanxi Provincial Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters told China daily on Monday.

Liao said some 150,800 people in the cities of Yulin and Yan'an in northern Shaanxi suffered from the disaster and the direct economic loss in the region reached 134 million yuan ($21 million).

"The heavy rain hit Yulin again on Monday morning and the road linking Yulin and Jiaxian, a county near Yulin that bore the brunt of the flooding, was cut off again. The road had been damaged by floods on July 27 and repaired on Sunday," said Liu Bo, director of the disaster relief office of Yulin City Civil Affairs Bureau on Monday.

China Daily was told by Jiaxian county's water supply company, that the pipe water supply in the county was cut off by floods on Saturday night. On Sunday the company sent 10 tankers with drinking water to local residents.

According to Liu Zhenquan, director of Yulin City Urban Flood Control Office, although there were some difficulties in supplying water to the county, there was no panic buying of bottled drinking water, and food and other necessities were readily available in supermarkets and shops.

Yulin City Roads Bureau said various sections of provincial roads 302, 204 and State road 210, were severely damaged by the floods and the bureau has made great efforts to repair them.

On July 27 and 28, Yulin airport canceled 26 flights due to the heavy rain. The airport reminded passengers to pay attention to the weather forecast and keep themselves informed of any flight changes.

The heavy rains also delayed four trains, stranding more than 23,000 passengers, at Yulin Railway Station. The passengers were all able to travel on Monday, said Chao Weihai, director of the station.

According to Liu Bo, the city's civil bureau has earmarked 9.63 million yuan for relief funds to help rebuilding efforts.

Shaanxi provincial meteorological observatory forecast heavy rains will hit most parts of the province from July 30 to Aug 1 and reminded people to pay close attention to potential floods and landslides.
