Thousands were affected by the delays. With not enough buses or taxis to shuttle passengers home, many people volunteered to step in, and become chauffeurs for the night. Three o'clock in the morning. Thousands of passengers still trapped at Beijing Capital International Airport. Some can't go home as there are not enough taxis and buses. But help has come. Volunteers have arrived to drive passengers home. Car owner said, "So many people are trapped here. I can't stay at home and do nothing. I live near the airport and I want to offer my help." Things initially became a little chaotic. But the police arrived to find parking places for the volunteers Zhou Zhenjian with Beijing international airport traffic team said, "We didn't know they were coming at first. Now, I'm arranging for them to come in order. They're really offering lot's of help at this time because it's so hard for passengers to go home right now." Many of the stranded passengers have been touched by the generosity. Passenger said, "I couldn't find a taxi and felt very nervous because I thought I wouldn't be able to get home. I didn't think so many people would come to help. I really thank them a lot." Some of the volunteers came back more than once, throughout the night. Despite a sleepless night, they said they just wanted to ensure every passenger had a safe and sound journey home.

After being employed at the Shanghai office of PricewaterhouseCoopers, one of the world's leading accounting firms, for just six months, Miss Pan, died from acute meningitis in April last year. Before her tragic death, she was working overtime for a consecutive three months, and only had three to four hours of sleep each night. She often complains on her microblog about her constant tiredness and her increasingly poor health, conditions she believed resulted from overwork. She once wrote "Whenever there's a chance to take a break, a fever comes." Death came at last. Such a tragic incident is not uncommon among white-collar workers in large Chinese cities. 25-year-old young man Hu Xinyu, died from organ failure after overworking for almost one month. He was once the employee of the Huawei Company. Shi Hong, the former editor in chief at Tencent, died of cerebral haemorrhaging at the age of 37. Many say heavy workloads and unhealthy diets have made white-collar workers susceptible to diseases. It seems most employees have forgotten the English saying, if you don't have your health you don't have anything.

In the city centre, many roads were flooded, causing traffic jams of up to 10 hours in some areas. In the suburban mountainous areas, over 30,000 people were relocated for fear of mudslide. The Beijing Flood control office sent out 500 tents, 20 motor boats, and 500 boxes of medicine to Fangshan district, the most severely hit area. More than 12,000 people worked to drain 1 million cubic meters of water from the streets. Traffic at the airport almost ground to a halt with about 75 percent of the flights being cancelled, leaving over 80 thousand travellers stranded.
