Loosen up - Media Watch July 23 -- BONTV

Posted: 24 Jul 2012 11:28 AM PDT

Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode CCTV editors recently blurred out the genitals of Michelangelo's David-Apollo during a newscast introducing an exhibition of Renaissance art in Beijing. The move made the show a laughingstock online, with users slamming the editors for their disrespect to art and unnecessary Puritanism. Some Internet users photoshopped pictures of famous sculptures with additional clothes for the sake of modesty, like a robed Venus de Milo and a pair of cutoffs for Adam in Michelangelo's most famous painting. Take another example. When Titanic 3D came to China's theaters, several shots of the heroine Rose's naked body were deleted, a step that wasn't even taken on the movie's original shown in China in 1997. It was claimed that due to the vivid visual effects of the 3D movie, some audience might reach out their hands with attempts to touch Rose's body, which would disturb other viewers, even if most viewers had already seen Rose's nude form 15 years ago. There are cultural reasons for this. The nude is an important part of Western art, going back centuries, and expressing feelings that go far beyond sexuality. But China never developed a tradition of the nude in its normal artwork, instead restricting depictions of nakedness to explicitly erotic prints and paintings. And the lack of effective sex education means Chinese are often prudish or embarrassed about the idea of nudity. Nevertheless, things have changed in recent decades. With more and more ...

EP-16 Riding camel skiing sand and Interview -- BONTV

Posted: 25 Jul 2012 12:18 AM PDT

If you're heading to Xiang Sha Wan then you can't miss the camel and sand boat rides. That said, you really need to be careful around the animals. They can sometimes become excited when looking at water, and can even steal your water bottle. You should also remember to keep your extended umbrella away from them so as not to frighten them. You should also come well-prepared to protect yourself from the sun. Heat stroke medicine is also indispensable in this region. You can also meet some very talented acrobats who will show off their skills for you. In the evening you can watch a fire party or join in some traditional Mongolian dancing with locals. The Singing Sands attracts not only tourists but scientists as well. The distinct sound that the sand makes is still a mystery. Legend has it that once when the god Zhang Guo Lao was passing through the region, his bag developed a large hole. When the contents of the bag spilled out onto the ground it turned normal green land into grey desert. He regretted his mistake so much that he blessed the area with special sounds when the wind blows.

EP.15-Ordos introduction -- BONTV

Posted: 24 Jul 2012 10:43 PM PDT

Erdos, which means Guard of the yurt in Mongolian, is located in the southwest of Inner Mongolia. Originally, it was considered one of the 9 states of China and Mongolian people settled there in the year 1457, during the Ming dynasty. One of the chief characteristics of Erdos is its rich mineral resources. Out of the whole of China it holds 1/6 of coal, 1/3 of gas, and 1/4 of the global pashm products. Living in Erdos are 2 million people and 170000 of them are Mongolian. The Mongolian culture there is well preserved and if you do travel to the city then you can stay in a traditional Mongolian yurt, drink milk tea, ride a camel and join in Mongolian festivities. The best time to travel to Erdos is from May to October. During this period you can avoid sand storms and a bitterly cold winter. In August of every year you can expect to see the Nadam Fair which is the Mongolian Olympic Games. And if it's traditional customs you're after then according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar, on March 21st, May 15th, August 12thand October 3rd, there will be great sacrifices for Genghis Khan. They are the most important sacrifices in the whole of Mongolia, so I suggest you check it out. A flight from Beijing to Erdos takes around an hour and 30 minutes, and will cost you only 900 RMB about 170 dollars.

Go to www.bon.tv to watch the full episode Follow us on Weibo weibo.com According to the Oriental Morning Post, the rapid decrease of the price of Maotai and other high-end Baijiu has made many suppliers store a large number of Baijiu as a precaution. The price of Maotai has decreased twice within 6 months, which has fallen from 360 dollars to 200 dollars per bottle. This has resulted in the loss of interest of many investors. Meanwhile, many dealers claim that due to the lack of stock, customers have to pay in advance if they want to reserve more than two boxes. After the Spring Festival, even though prices were still high, many dealers have been quietly cutting prices to move inventory.

Holes in the system - Media Watch July 24 -- BONTV

Posted: 24 Jul 2012 10:11 PM PDT

Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode The heaviest downpour that hit Beijing in six decades flooded the city's main roads and killed 37 people over the weekend. In recent years, floods caused by rain storms have repeatedly occurred in Chinese cities. And the latest downpour in Beijing has stirred up a new round of skepticism on the quality of infrastructure amid rapid urbanization. The record precipitation did expose a coarse facet of Chinese modernization. There is an unofficial but interesting criterion in judging whether a city is developed or not: After three hours of rainfall, if you walk in the street and see slow but moving traffic, roads that are slippery but not swamped, then this is generally a developed place. For a while, China was seen as entering the ranks of developed countries. However, Chinese cities are apparently unpracticed in facing disasters such as Saturday's torrential downpour. If so much chaos can be triggered in Beijing, the capital of the nation, problems in urban infrastructure of many other places can only be worse. As Chinese experts point out, in terms of drainage technology, China is decades behind developed societies. Long-term planning and coordination are also lacking in constructing and maintaining cities' drainage systems. Legislation on urban drainage and sewage treatment only started in recent years and still needs to be improved. It has been predicted that cities will be hit by similar disasters even more frequently, due to ...
