China News Broadcast, July 26, 2012: Gu Kailai Charged and Beijing Death Toll Rises

Posted: 26 Jul 2012 05:27 PM PDT

In today's China news, Gu Kailai, the wife of former Politburo member Bo Xilai, has been charged with intentional homicide. Her trial has yet to be scheduled, but is believed to be soon approaching. The official death toll from Beijing's floods has been revised to 77 lives lost, according to Chinese authorities. NTD has obtained a list of 61 verified deaths. Earlier this week Chinese authorities announced the appointment of major officers of the Military Garrison Command for Sansha. Sansha is the capital of the newly created administrative region of Yongxin Island. Protesters of a national education course for Hong Kong's primary schools are organizing a march on Sunday, July 29th. Organizers are expecting 10000 people to show up, including parents with their children. The US State Department released a report on Wednesday regarding human rights abuses in China. The US House Committee on Foreign Affairs held a public hearing on human rights abuses in China, a day after the US had closed-doors human rights talks with Chinese authorities. It appears that the Chinese regime has taken an interest in NTD's operation -- so much so that its security apparatus tried to recruit a dancer from mainland China to be an informant. The person had registered to compete in NTD's International Classical Dance Competition, and was contacted by security officials to provide information about NTD. Dancer Tailor Soldier Spy - Chinese Regime Tries to Recruit Dancer to Spy on NTD

Posted: 26 Jul 2012 05:15 PM PDT

It appears that the Chinese regime has taken an interest in NTD's operation -- so much so that its security apparatus tried to recruit a dancer from mainland China to be an informant. The person had registered to compete in NTD's International Classical Dance Competition, and was contacted by security officials to provide information about NTD. Our Hong Kong bureau found out about this after receiving a strange email apparently sent from the competitor. When we contacted the dancer, they said their email was commandeered by members of the Public Security Bureau. We are withholding the dancer's name and details for their safety. The unwanted attention by security official had spooked them into pulling out of the competition. Still, the director of NTD's International Competition Series, Lijuan Ma, says the dancer refused to cooperate with Chinese authorities. [Lijuan Ma, Director, NTD's International Competition Series]: "This competitor is a professional artist. He does not want his art to be tainted by the dirty tactics of the state security, or the public security system." This is not the first time the Chinese regime has tried to meddle in NTD's competition series. In June we found out authorities had issued a secret notice to dance schools and other organizations to warn dancers against joining the competition. Ma says many registered contestants have already been harassed and interrogated by Chinese police. NTD began holding a series of international competitions in ...

Mysterious Lotuses Appear in Chinese River

Posted: 26 Jul 2012 05:13 PM PDT

In traditional Chinese culture, lotus flowers are symbols for purity. They grow out of muddy waters yet maintain their beauty. But very rarely do we see this kind of lotus flower. In Sichuan province, these lotus flower patterns began appearing in a river on July 13th. They seem to grow out of nowhere, but every few minutes, they form these distinct lotus flower shapes -- complete with white petals. The remarkable phenomena happened again six days later. Interestingly enough, this river is called Lotus River, and the town -- you guessed it, Lotus County. Apparently the river was known for producing these lotus flowers in ancient times. The incredible "lotus flowers" have baffled locals. Some say they're simply oil patches in the water, others say it's nothing short of a miracle.

Hong Kong Protests Against National Education

Posted: 26 Jul 2012 05:10 PM PDT

Protesters of a national education course for Hong Kong's primary schools are organizing a march on Sunday, July 29th. Organizers are expecting 10000 people to show up, including parents with their children. National education is a course that will focus on China's political system, including Hong Kong's 'one country, two systems' relationship with the Chinese regime. It will also cover recent Chinese history. The course is expected to be introduced to primary schools this coming year, and planned to become mandatory in 2015. Parents are criticizing the course for its bias, with some calling the course 'brainwashing.' Upon review, the course ignores politically-sensitive topics like the Tiananmen Massacre. It also tiptoes around official negligence during the Sichuan earthquake, which saw schools collapse due to inadequate building materials. Fourteen groups will be represented at the march on Sunday, including Scholarism, a student group, and teachers' unions.

China Appoints Major Officers for Garrison in South China Sea

Posted: 26 Jul 2012 05:08 PM PDT

Earlier this week Chinese authorities announced the appointment of major officers of the Military Garrison Command for Sansha. Sansha is the capital of the newly created administrative region of Yongxin Island. Some analysts interpret Sansha's presence in the hotly-disputed South China Sea as a passive-aggressive exertion of power over the region. China's State Council established its authority in Sansha in late June in a possible response to Vietnam's declaration of marking one of the region's islands as its own. In an interview with Time Magazine, maritime security specialist at the Japan Institute for International Affairs in Tokyo, Tetsuo Kotani, said the decision to appoint major officers for the Sansha garrison shows that the tension in the South China Sea is increasing. US presence is expected to continue, and both the Philippines and Vietnam have stated that they will not recognize China's newly-formed city.

"Bo-"Gu Kailai Charged in Heywood Murder

Posted: 26 Jul 2012 05:06 PM PDT

Gu Kailai, the wife of former Communist Party politician Bo Xilai, has been charged with intentional homicide. Gu and an employee of the family, Zhang Xiaojun, will be prosecuted for the alleged poisoning of British businessman, Neil Heywood. Heywood is believed to have been poisoned after he threatened to expose Gu's plan to move money abroad. Heywood was a friend of the Bo family. State-run Xinhua news agency says the motive was a (quote) "conflict of economic interests" between Heywood and Gu. State-run media did not give a trial date, but it is likely to be in early August. Gu has been in police custody for months on suspicion of committing or arranging Heywood's murder. No details of the crime were publicly released, other than a general comment from Chinese state media that he was killed after a financial dispute. The accusations leveled against Gu are the latest development in a wider political scandal surrounding her husband, Bo Xilai. Bo was formerly a member of the Politburo, although he lost all of his central Communist Party positions at the same time Gu was arrested in April. Bo is under investigation within the Party that could escalate to a criminal investigation. The political scandal surrounding Bo has revealed factional fighting within the usually unified front of the Communist Party, disrupting a normally choreographed leadership transition scheduled for later this year.

The official death toll from Beijing's floods has been revised to 77 lives lost, according to Chinese authorities. [Pan Anjun, Deputy Chief of Beijing Flood Control Headquarters]: "By now, 77 bodies are found in Beijing. Among them, 66 people's identities have been confirmed. 11 others are yet to be identified. For several days after the flood, the death toll had remained at 37.Many residents around Beijing have criticized authorities for fabricating a low death toll and for only counting deaths within the city's administrative region.Chinese Internet users have suggested through posts on social media sites that the true death toll could number in the hundreds. A Chinese micro-blogger going by the handle "Sneaky Cat" writes, (quote) "My friend who works at a tourist agency said, from what they know, at Yesanpo, the tourist site in Fangshan, there were 300-400 people who died. Why is the official number 30-something? Did they eat up all the other bodies?"Fangshan district, a suburb of Beijing, is thought to have been hit the hardest by the floodwaters. Cute white lion cubs grace Mexico zoo

Posted: 26 Jul 2012 11:59 AM PDT

Their chances of survival in the wild are slim. So these white lion cubs are a very welcome arrival at the Loro Zoo in Puebla, Mexico. Vet student Andrea Sumohano says one cub is an introvert while her sister is gregarious. Andrea Sumohano, vet student, "She wants to climb, wants to be on top, biting, licking. She is very active and eats a lot. The other is more sleepy and calm and gets angry when her sister disturbs her." The cubs were removed from their mother, Numbi, who failed to immediately feed them. And they will be hand-reared until they are three months old. The zoo's white lions hail from South Africa, where their pale color makes them vulnerable in the wild, says zoo vet, Carlos Gomez Medina. arlos Gomez Medina, zoo vet "Remember that the animals depend on their color as a camouflage in the wild to evade being hunted. The white lions can be easily seen and rarely survive in the natural environment." White lions are technically extinct outside captivity - the last one spotted in the wild was in South Africa in 1994.
