Dramatic flood video: Deadly deluge sweeps Beijing district

Posted: 25 Jul 2012 05:53 AM PDT

Beicheying Village in Beijing's Fangshan District recorded 46 centimetres (18 inches) of rain on Saturday as the capital experienced its heaviest downpour in six decades. At least 37 people died in Beijing and it's not yet clear how many of the dead perished in the hard-hit Fangshan province. But in the wake of the flooding, there has been intense scrutiny over its causes and whether or not officials did enough to minimize its impact. State media reported Wednesday that Beijing's mayor and a vice mayor have resigned. Hype over Syria chemicals 'deja-vu & old Pentagon scenario to oust regime'

Posted: 24 Jul 2012 12:27 PM PDT

Syria's rebels claim the regime has moved its chemical arsenal to airports near the country's borders, in a move they say is to intimidate foreign powers. Sources in Damascus, though, claim the lion's share of the stockpiles are stored securely in Syria's less-turbulent south. William F. Engdahl, the author of "Myths, Lies and Oil Wars" talks to RT. He says the hype over Syria's chemical weapons may be a part of America's plan to topple inconvenient dictators. 'Attack on Iran after Syria falls major goal of the West'

Posted: 08 Jul 2012 01:32 AM PDT

The UN's special envoy to Syria says international peace efforts have not succeeded, partly as a result of divisions between world powers. This comes a day after US Secretary of State Clinton said Russia and China will pay a price for allegedly supporting Assad. Patrick Henningsen, a Mideast analyst and editor at infowars.com, believes Syria is being used by the US as a proxy to start a war with Iran.

Beijing Police Chief Under Fire For Internet Sweep

Posted: 28 Jul 2012 07:19 AM PDT

After Beijing's massive deluge, local residents turned to the Internet to vent against the city's widespread flooding. Now that anger has turned towards the chief of Beijing's Public Security Bureau, Fu Zhenghua, after he warned residents not to use the Internet to "attack" the country's leaders. Fu issued the warning on Tuesday. He said Beijing police have started a new round of initiatives targeting the Internet. The initiatives will run between July and August. Online author, Jing Chu hit out at Fu's remarks, saying the public has the right to criticize the government. [Jing Chu, Chinese Online Author]: "How do you define "attack" when you talk about attacking the Communist Party, its leaders or the system? Can posting a couple of sentences amount to attack? Is the government without fault? Why can't we criticize it? It's a joke in the world for someone like Fu to be Beijing's police chief." One netizen using the handle "She Mei" said on her Twitter-like Sina Weibo account: "Tell Fu Zhenghua we are taking on the Party, the country's leaders and the system, I challenge him to a duel, if he is game." After the outcry, Fu Zhenghua's name is now a blocked search term on Sina Weibo. So far this year, Beijing police have closed down 263 internet cafes, to, (quote), "protect the physical and mental health of young people." Police have also arrested more than 5000 people for Internet-related crimes, and removed more than 360000 "illegal" online posts, according to state-run ...

But the British capital's tattoo parlours could be in for a surprise visit from the American teenager, who is looking likely to be one of the biggest winners at the Games, after she vowed to get herself inked with the Olympic rings once her swimming commitments are finished. It has become common practice for Olympic athletes to get tattoos. The iconic five rings are the most popular choice but where they end up varies wildly. Michael Phelps has one that peaks out from his swimming trunks while others have them between their shoulder blades, at the base of the neck, on the hips or even on their feet. And being tattoos, they will be there long after the iconic rings are finally taken down at end of the games next month

Olympic Taxi Protest Grinds Traffic to a Halt

Posted: 28 Jul 2012 04:19 AM PDT

For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me A protest by taxi drivers over London's Olympic lanes brought one of the city's busiest roundabouts to a complete standstill on Friday, just hours before the Olympic opening ceremony. Dozens of police officers stood guard on Hyde Park Corner as the number of taxis slowly grew, until the entire junction stopped moving altogether. Drivers were protesting the fact that London's tens of thousands of taxis have been forbidden from driving in the Olympic lanes set up to allow vehicles related to the Games to move more freely. Cabbies say their exclusion from the lanes will prevent them from picking up passengers in many areas, and will also increase time spent in traffic jams, both of which will significantly affect business. [George Vyse, Taxi Driver]: "We've been trying, trying, endeavouring to get into the Olympic lanes, just to go to work. We're asking for no more money, we just want to go to work. We've had people like the commission, Pete Hendy, Boris Johnson and various other people, not listening, and more or less just told us to get on with it and do what we want to do. We've made comments about the people that are invalids, because every cab's got a wheelchair facility, but whatever arguments we've put up, whatever sensible comments we've made, they've just been pushed to one side." The protest started at approximately 2pm local time, and within half an hour ...

Protesters 'Die In' at Olympic Park, Decry Dow Chemical's Sponsorship

For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me Protesters against Dow Chemical's sponsorship of the Olympic Games staged a "die in" demonstration outside the Olympic park on Friday. Around 20 people donned shrouds and lay on the ground as they continued their campaign against the US company. Spokeswoman Meredith Alexander said Dow Chemical should not have been chosen as an Olympic sponsor as it has not properly compensated victims of the Bhopal gas leak tragedy in India. [Meredith Alexander, Protest Organizer]: "The Bhopal Medical Appeal has come to the very gates of the Olympic park to remind everyone of Dow Chemical's toxic legacy. Dow has spent millions as a sponsor of the Olympics but what they are trying to do is hide the truth of themselves as a company. Dow is the company now responsible for the Bhopal tragedy which saw over 20000 people killed and half a million exposed to poisonous gas. Dow has completely failed to take responsibility to give full and fair compensation to the victims and to clean up the site which has lain covered in poison for almost three decades." As many as 25000 residents of Bhopal died in the aftermath of the gas leak at a pesticide factory that was owned by a subsidiary of Union Carbide in 1984. According to activists, about 100000 people who were exposed to the gas now suffer from ailments that include cancer, blindness and birth defects. Dow, which bought Union Carbide in ...

Shot to Death Shielding Girlfriend in Colorado Movie Massacre

Posted: 28 Jul 2012 12:02 AM PDT

At the ill-fated midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Colorado, a heroic story emerges. Jon Blunk, a 25-year-old security guard, used his life to protect his 21-year-old girlfriend Jansen Young. During the shooting, Blunk pushed Young under a seat and shielded her with his own body. Unfortunately, he was shot and did not survive. [Jansen Young, Blunk's Girlfriend]: "Someone came in. I didn't actually see the person but I did see that they threw something. That's why I knew someone was there. And it flew through the air and it smoked the entire time. When it landed it went boom, and Jon grabbed me and said 'Get down and stay down, there's a man in the theater shooting people!' Then, I kept changing my mind, like, 'This is real," and then I was like, 'No, this isn't real. These people are acting. This can't be real.' Then, Jon pushed me under the seats and kind of held me there. I heard people screaming that they had been shot. I felt a lot of blood everywhere, until the shooting stopped and then when I went to get him so that we could leave, he was unresponsive." They had met at a local shopping mall, and started dating after. [Jansen Young, Blunk's Girlfriend]: "He was a security guard at the mall, and he was just really cute. So I went back to the mall the next day to give him my number, and he texted me. Then, we started hanging out. He just made me happy all the time, he wanted to make me happy. And he was, he was strong, and he was the man that took ...

Clinton: Russia and China "will pay" for supporting Syria

Posted: 06 Jul 2012 04:19 PM PDT

Hillary Clinton's demand that Russia and China pay the price for "blockading" the Syrian peace process may lead to more global strife. Will opposition to US policy now equate to supporting tyranny and evil? On Friday, Friends of Syria sought ways to press a transition plan on official Damascus. Assad regime officials forming a unity government with the opposition to lead the Arab country to presidential elections had been a key outcome of global talks in Geneva the previous week. In a sudden turn, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pounced on Moscow and Beijing for "holding up progress" in the Syrian crisis. Clinton urged the 100-plus nations gathered in Paris to make it clear to Russia and China that the two will "pay a price" for supporting the Assad government. RT talks to James Corbett of The Corbett Report.

Syria sanctions vetoed during UN vote

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 02:40 PM PDT

As the world turns towards war-torn Syria, member states with the United Nations attempted to impose sanctions on the government of Bashar al-Assad on Thursday. A proposed resolution would have meant the halt of heavy weapon exports to Syria and the removal of the military from heavily populated areas, but a veto by way of Russia and China thwarted a western-attempt at intervention. RT's Marina Portnaya brings us the latest from the UN's role in the Syrian war.

Islamophobia's Role in Foreign Policy

Posted: 25 Jul 2012 04:39 PM PDT

At this point, we all know well what President Obama's foreign policy looks like. While the rhetoric may be softer than his predecessors, and while's he's ended the war in Iraq, and torture and closed black site prisons, he's expanded drone strikes and become dependent on targeted killing. Shadow wars have erased the meaning of borders even more. He expanded the war in Afghanistan before deciding to plan on a close. He got us involved in a military conflict in Libya without seeking Congressional approval. And on Iran, he's said that a military option is not off the table. And yet according to Mitt Romney, he's soft and leading from behind. Then again, Mitt Romney needs to say something, because the truth is, he probably wouldn't handle things much differently. And how much of America's foreign policy is shaped by Islamophobia? Alyona discusses with Deepa Kumar, an associate professor of Media Studies and Middle East studies at Rutgers University and author of the book Islamophobia and the Politics of Empire and Michael Cohen, a columnist for Foreign Policy's Election 2012 channel and a fellow at the Century Foundation. MSM: Chen vs. Shaye [© RTAmerica]

Posted: 06 May 2012 05:36 PM PDT

TheAlyonaShow : www.youtube.com 05/04/2012 The story of the blind Chinese activist, Chen Guangcheng has been one of the biggest stories of the week for the mainstream media. It all happened the same week that Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton travelled to China. And a reason to bring this up again is not only the extensive coverage that's been given to Chen Guancheng, but also, because yesterday was World Press Freedom Day. And President Obama issued a statement paying tribute to journalists who have lost their lives, freedom or personal well-being in pursuit of truth and justice. Of course the thing is this is the administration that's launched a massive war on whistleblowers that hurts press freedom. We have to remember the case of Abdulelah Haider Shaye the Yemeni journalist that Jeremy Scahill reported on for The Nation, who now stays prison, at President Obama's own request. And today he's still in jail. Twitter: twitter.com Facebook: www.facebook.com
