Industry watchdog says China will continue to protect its rare earth resources, but will try to resolve policy disputes. On Monday, the World Trade Organization has opened a panel on the exports of tungsten and molybdenum, crucial for the manufacturing of hi-tech products. In response to this situation, Zhu Hong Ren, Chief Engineer of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, says that China will carry out consultations within the WTO to resolve the issues. China says it has stepped up regulation on rare earth to protect the environment from reckless exploitation, not to monopolize the market. Rare earths are a group of 17 chemically similar non-renewable elements. Currently, China supplies more than 90% of the world's demand for the rare earth metals, with its reserves accounting for only 23% of the world's total.
