Backing off not an option for China - Media Watch September 17 - BONTV

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 11:22 PM PDT

Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode A total of six Chinese surveillance ships carried out a patrol and law enforcement mission in waters around the Diaoyu Islands and its affiliated islets Friday. The move marks China's disdain for Tokyo's so-called "control" over the islands. The "control" of the uninhabited islands is only reflected by the presence of the Japanese Coast Guard in the waters. The political dynamics surrounding the Diaoyu Islands will surely be reshaped once China routinely dispatches ships to patrol the islands. China's maritime enforcement will then serve as a strong deterrent against Japanese right-wing activists who seek to land on the islands. The situation would further change if China seized Japanese nationals who illegally enter China's sovereign waters. China should seek to gather momentum toward such a direction and achieve these objectives. The consequences of China strengthening its law enforcement within 12 nautical miles of the islands include possible confrontation with the Japanese Coast Guard. As China firmly stands determined to safeguard its own sovereignty, Japan is more than likely to change its mind. China's strong expression of its anger and countermeasures are legitimate and reasonable. China should be confident about strategically overwhelming Japan. The People's Liberation Army's Navy and Air Force, as well as its Second Artillery Corps, are advised to increase their preparation and intensify their deterrence against Japan's ...

New iPhone5 fail to impress - Media Watch September 15 - BONTV

Posted: 18 Sep 2012 12:36 AM PDT

Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode APPLE'S iPhone 5, with its bigger screen and thinner design, doesn't seem to be wowing Chinese fans and industry professionals like the iPhone 4 did. That could be because numerous leaks about the new product have revealed that not much is new, and widely anticipated features, such as wireless charging and eyeball and gesture recognition - which exist in rival models by Nokia and Samsung - are missing. In addition, the Chinese mainland lacks a 4G network, which the iPhone 5 supports. China is Apple's second biggest regional market by revenue, but the Chinese mainland is not on the list of the first batch of regions to sell the iPhone 5. Sales are expected to start in Hong Kong next Friday, with a starting price of HK$5588 (US$716) for the 16GB model. There is no date yet for official iPhone 5 sales on the Chinese mainland but stores on Taobao, the online marketplace, are already taking orders for phones at around 5500 yuan (US$868). "It's just a taller iPhone 4S without innovation," said Fjptlinli on Weiphone.com, a major Apple user forum in China. It was just one of many posts expressing disappointment at the new device. And in an online survey on Sina.com, 48.1 percent of 36000 respondents said they would not be buying an iPhone 5, 24.6 percent would "wait and see," and just 27.3 percent said they would buy one. Slower innovation With the iPhone 5, Apple's pace of innovation is slower, which brings opportunities to rivals such as ...

Coca-cola breaks promise - China Take September 17 - BONTV

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 11:08 PM PDT

Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode Well, this comment concerns a dispute between a man named He Fengfu and Coca Cola, China. HE works at recycling center in the Guangxi region and decided to take advantage of a promotional offer run by the company. To do this he collected 120000 Coca Cola bottle caps with the words "You Can Get Another Bottle of 330ml Coke For Free" on them. His collection didn't come cheap though - HE spent over $22000 employing other workers to collect the caps, even using his mother's pension to do so. But Coca Cola balked at handing over the 120000 bottles saying Mr. HE himself wasn't the consumer. Unfortunately the validity of the offer was from "from March 15th to July 15th" - so barring a successful court case it seems Mr. HE's scheme may have lost money instead of making it.

Hong Kong plans to start trading today for up to one year, while CME will start by the end of 2012, for up to three years. The derivatives are designed to help investors operating in China protect against volatility of the RMB. Right now, the yuan is down 0.6% this year against the dollar, after surging 31% since 2005, after ending it's currency peg. The future contract will help investors and companies hedge currency risks, especially since earlier this year, China's central government announced it would allow currency to be traded more freely. Hong Kong has become the leading center of RMB exchanges, which offers international investors a chance to get a share. Analysts differ on which direction the Chinese currency will head next, given uncertainty over China's policies and its slowing economic growth.
