| Tung Disclosed Top Secrets Posted: 20 Sep 2012 08:47 PM PDT | Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com The health condition of Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leaders, as well as their distribution of power, had always been top secret. However, in an interview with US Cable News Network (CNN), Tung Chee-hwa, the former Hong Kong Chief Executive, actively mentioned the reasons why Xi Jinping went missing for two weeks. Tung also said after the 18th National People's Congress (NPC) meeting, Hu Jintao will remain Chairman of the Central Military Commission. Outsiders speculate Tung may have been assigned to reveal the information with the purpose to cover up internal conflicts, and convey a message to outside that the CCP will have a smooth transition in the 18th NPC. Xi Jinping, future leader in China, mysteriously disappeared for two weeks and rumors abound. When Tung Chee-hwa, the former Hong Kong Chief Executive, was interviewed by CNN, he disclosed the secret unintentionally. During the interview, the female anchor asked about attention Xi Jinping's disappearance received by the outside world, and Tung Chee-hwa surely responded that Xi hurt his back while swimming, but has recovered and is back to work. Even more unexpectedly, when the female anchor asked if Hu Jintao will remain the military leader after the succession of Xi Jinping, Mr. Tung Chee Hwa said frankly he did not have information available, but "based on past experience, he (Hu Jintao) will remain in this position for some time." | China News - September 20, 2012: EU-China Summit and Flash PMI Figures Released Posted: 20 Sep 2012 05:26 PM PDT | Today at the EU-China summit in Brussels, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with European leaders to discuss trade relations. On the agenda was an agreement on CO2 Emissions Trading Schemes (ETS). The EU was eager to work with the world's largest emitter of CO2 and find ways to cut China's carbon footprint. European and Chinese officials have finished their negotiations in Brussels at the EU-China summit. But the press conference—scheduled for today—was cancelled at the last minute by the Chinese. And that cancellation has been drawing questions from the media and European officials. A car carrying US ambassador to China Gary Locke was surrounded by anti-Japan protestors on Tuesday. Chinese authorities have expressed regret over the incident, and stated they are investigating the matter. No arrests were apparently made at the scene. Japanese automobile manufacturers Toyota and Honda kept their Chinese operations on hold on Thursday. This comes after some outlets were damaged earlier in the week during violent anti-Japan protests in China. Relations between China and Japan hit their lowest point in decades on Tuesday. It was the anniversary of Japan's occupation of China in 1931, something China's leadership still touts as a deep humiliation. | Man Pulls Train With His Ponytail Posted: 20 Sep 2012 04:29 PM PDT | On Monday an Indian man tries to get into the record books by using the strength of his hair. Driven by what he says is an avid passion for setting records, the 45-year old driver pulled over 40 tons with his ponytail. [Sailen Roy, Resident of Siliguri, West Bengal State] "On the occasion of Vishwakarma Puja, I pulled the train with my hair tuft, including four wagons and a locomotive. I pulled the train for two and a half metres." The event takes place in India's West Bengal state, and apparently it's the only place that can boast such an event. [Sailen Roy, Resident of Siliguri, West Bengal State] "This kind of stunt is not performed by anybody in any other country, so I want to teach this technique to 10-12 people, so that they make the country proud. It would be very helpful if the West Bengal government provides some assistance to me." Roy is now hoping to get his name registered in the Guinness Book of World Records. And there may be more where that came from. He has already beat his own record of pulling a truck and two buses with his ponytail. This may not be the last record he sets in his lifetime. | Japanese Car Makers Keep China Production on Hold Posted: 20 Sep 2012 03:20 PM PDT | Japanese automobile manufacturers Toyota and Honda kept their Chinese operations on hold on Thursday. This comes after some outlets were damaged earlier in the week during violent anti-Japan protests in China. [Akio Toyoda, Chairman, Japan Automobile Manufacturers Assoc.] "We are prioritizing securing safety first. Currently, each company is deciding whether they should restart operations. So in this sense, not all operations are getting back on line with the current situation being so fluid." Relations between China and Japan hit their lowest point in decades on Tuesday. It was the anniversary of Japan's occupation of China in 1931, something China's leadership still touts as a deep humiliation. It added fuel to days of protests in more than 50 Chinese cities over the sovereignty of a group of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea. Chinese protestors destroyed Japanese shops, goods and automobiles in the streets. There have been calls for boycotts of Japanese businesses and products spreading on the Chinese Internet. Akio Toyoda, who is also president of Toyota Motor Corp., called for a peaceful resolution and said the two countries needed to cooperate. He added he was hurt when he witnessed Japanese cars being destroyed by the protesters. [Akio Toyoda, Chairman, Japan Automobile Manufacturers Assoc.] (male, Japanese) "I can't stand watching that. | Wang Lijun, Organ Transplants, and China's Power Struggle Posted: 20 Sep 2012 03:01 PM PDT | What information did Chinese official Wang Lijun reveal to the US Consulate when he tried to defect back in February? Is it something the US State Department knows, but hasn't told anyone? There is increasing evidence that China's state-run hospitals have routinely extracted organs from living Falun Gong practitioners, and sold them for transplant, and that Wang Lijun once oversaw some of these facilities. US Congresspersons this week are circulating a "Dear Colleague" letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. They're asking the State Department to reveal any information that, "relates to transplant abuses in China, including any documentation that Wang Lijun may have provided to our Consulate." That letter follows a congressional hearing last week, the first one ever on forced organ removal from prisoners of conscience in China. China Analyst Matt Gnaizda and Dr. Damon Noto, spokesman for Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting, join host Shelley Zhang on this episode of China Focus. | Views: 7 1 ratings | | Time: 13:52 | More in News & Politics |

| Chinese Dairy Company Forced to Recall Another Baby Product Posted: 20 Sep 2012 01:55 PM PDT | China's Bright Dairy & Food Co Ltd has been ordered to recall a cheese product for babies. It contains a banned additive, a Shanghai newspaper reported on Thursday. It's the company's second food scandal in two weeks, following the recall of batches of sour milk last week. Other dairy products from the company are still available. But shoppers are losing confidence in Chinese dairy products. [Du Ming'e, Mother]: "I'm very worried by the milk recall today. I will not be feeding my baby any Chinese dairy products in the future. I will definitely choose overseas brands." China's milk industry is struggling to restore consumer confidence after a series of scandals, the worst of which was in 2008 when milk and infant formula laced with the industrial chemical melamine killed at least six children and made nearly 300000 ill. [Chen Shouchan, Shanghai Resident]: "Chinese-produced milk should still be consumed. We should support our country's industries so that they can get stronger. But I hope the government will monitor more strictly and the factories will be more self-regulated. Then the people can purchase the products without having to worry, and our generations to come will be healthier." According to the state-run Shanghai Daily newspaper, Bright Diary will be charged penalties for changing its formula without authorization. | Views: 49 3 ratings | | Time: 01:17 | More in News & Politics |

The Shanghai Composite index closed at a two week low, down 1.6%.The PMI measures manufacturing activity. The index of 47.8 for September is slightly higher than August. That hints at a stabilization of the manufacturing slowdown. Meaning the economy is still slowing down, but not as quickly as before. However, the sub-index is at a ten-month low and shows an increasing contraction of overall manufacturing output. The flash PMI is considered an initial report. | Chinese Protestors Surround US Ambassador Locke's Car Posted: 20 Sep 2012 01:23 PM PDT | Chinese officials have expressed "regret" regarding the incident on Tuesday, when anti-Japan protestors in Beijing surrounded and slightly damaged the official vehicle of US Ambassador Gary Locke. The ambassador was unharmed, and the incident lasted only a few minutes, according to those at the scene. The ambassador's vehicle was outside the US Embassy at the time—which is near the Japanese Embassy. It was clearly marked as an American vehicle. [Victoria Nuland, State Department Spokesperson]: "There were Chinese security personnel standing in front of the compound, they responded and removed the demonstrators from the scene, which allowed the ambassador's car to move forward." While security forces quickly cleared the scene, and officials have since promised to investigate the incident... there were no reported arrests. The demonstrations against Japan occurred on a large scale throughout China, beginning last weekend. They mainly focus on Japan's recent formal purchase of the East China Sea island chain known as Senkaku in Japan, and Diaoyu in China. Both countries claim the territory. The United States, while it has attempted to take a middle position, is caught between its security commitment to Japan and its desire to avoid provoking regional conflicts. [Victoria Nuland, State Department Spokesperson]: "We the United States don't take a position on the ultimate sovereignty of the Senkakus but we want to see the Japanese and the Chinese work through it. | EU Agrees to Help China Cut CO2 Emissions Posted: 20 Sep 2012 01:11 PM PDT | Today at the EU-China summit in Brussels, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with European leaders to discuss trade relations. On the agenda was an agreement on CO2 Emissions Trading Schemes (ETS). The EU was eager to work with the world's largest emitter of CO2 and find ways to cut China's carbon footprint. China has not complied with the EU's new carbon tax that affects airlines using all EU airports. The tax was estimated to cut CO2 emissions by 20% and raise money for green development. So far, China, India, Russian and the US have protested the airline tax and both India and China refused to provide their carbon emission data for their airlines. Despite their sticking points, the EU has agreed to invest millions in carbon reduction projects and has said it will provide its technical assistance to China over a four-year period. | Citibank Launches New Credit Cards in China Posted: 20 Sep 2012 01:04 PM PDT | Citibank has become the first foreign bank to launch a sole-branded credit card in China. Anyone with a monthly salary above 3500 yuan can apply. The new set of Citi credit cards offers a total of five cards in two categories. They are now available in 13 cities. Each card offers only a single currency, using Unionpay for RMB, and Visa or MasterCard for US dollars. Citibank says its points and miles will never expire and that they expect China to be the largest credit market in the world by the end of the decade. [Jonathan Larsen, Asia Pacific Head of Consumer Banking]: "As far as the credit card business is concerned, we see it as a very early stage in this market. There's a lot of maturation going to happen, and for us, if we stay very focused on emerging affluent clients, clients with global perspective, with global needs, we think we can build a very successful business." Citibank got approval to issue its own China credit cards in February. The decision was part of a government plan to make the banking market more competitive. Foreign banks only account for less than 2 percent of China's banking services, however so, experts say the foreign banks' increased involvement in credit card services will not be a threat to domestic banks. [Dr. Oliver Rui, Professor, China Europe International Business School]: "The four major domestic banks have set up branches all over China, so they can not compete with them in this area, they can only compete on the basis of product ... | Views: 2 0 ratings | | Time: 02:03 | More in News & Politics |

| China Skips EU-China Press Event Over Attendee List Posted: 20 Sep 2012 12:56 PM PDT | European and Chinese officials have finished their negotiations in Brussels at the EU-China summit. But the press conference—scheduled for today—was cancelled at the last minute by the Chinese. And that cancellation has been drawing questions from the media and European officials. The Chinese had demanded complete control over which Chinese-language media could attend. The EU refused their demand, so the Chinese pulled out. The journalists would have been able to ask questions of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao. [Edward McMillan-Scott, Vice-President, EU Parliament, Democracy and Human Rights]: "So now there are two countries that dictate to Brussels who attend the press conferences: the tyranny in Beijing and the dictatorship in Moscow. Freedom of speech is a fundamental part of our rights in the European Union. They're being impeded by the authorities here in conjunction with the Chinese regime, and that is not tolerable." China frequently attempts to block independent Chinese media—particularly NTD and The Epoch Times—from getting access to events involving Chinese officials. [Audience]: "But I can't really understand why the commission collaborates year after year with providing the courtesy and whitewash to the Chinese head of government or head of state, whatever he's called of refusing to take any inconvenient questions." [Audience]: "If it is impossible to agree on the conditions of a press conference how can we hope to agree on bi-lateral trade agreements, the CO2 ... | Views: 37 3 ratings | | Time: 01:53 | More in News & Politics |

| Jesus had a Wife Posted: 20 Sep 2012 10:20 AM PDT | A Harvard scholar who unveilled an ancient Coptic papyrus in which Jesus refers to "my wife" has said the discovery provides no definitive answer but it was "the first unequivocal statement" to claim that he was married. Full Story: In what seems to be ripped from a Dan Brown novel, a Harvard professor has said that an ancient piece of papyrus makes "the first unequivocal statement" that claims that Jesus was married. [Karen King, Hollis Chair of Divinity at Harvard Divinity School]: "I think the fragment itself is discussing issues about discipleship and family. But certainly the fact that this is the first unequivocal statement we have that claims Jesus had a wife, is of great interest." Karen King is a well-respected historian of Christianity, and the Hollis Chair of Divinity at Harvard Divinity School. She says that, on the ancient Coptic papyrus from the fourth century, while Jesus is speaking to his disciples, a scribe writes "Jesus said to them, my wife ...". The sentence cuts off there on the 8 cm by 4 cm fragment. [Karen King, Hollis Chair of Divinity at Harvard Divinity School]: "I want to be very clear that this fragment doesn't actually give us any evidence that Jesus was married, or not married. It is too late. Infact all of the earlier and most reliable historical information is completely silent and this does not change that situation. But we can ask the question when did Christians first start talking about whether Jesus was married or not? Who was the ... | Views: 89 10 ratings | | Time: 02:57 | More in News & Politics |

| "Innocence of Muslims" Actress Feels Betrayed by Filmmakers Posted: 20 Sep 2012 10:03 AM PDT | Actress says she "felt sick and betrayed" at having acted in anti-Islam film "Innocence of Muslims," which led to violent protests across the Muslim world. Full script: An actress who worked on "Innocence of Muslims," the film that has sparked violent protests around the world, said she was horrified when she found out she had been in the same movie that led to the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi, including the US ambassador to Libya. [Lily Dionne, Actress]: "I just felt sick and betrayed and it was totally bizarre and surreal." Lily Dionne had a role in what she thought was a small production, but had no indications of any anti-Islam sentiment. [Lily Dionne, Actress]: "This little movie that we thought no one would ever see, like just this cheesy thing that probably wasn't going to get made or anything, is now out there. It's this international disaster, it's shocking." Christopher Stevens and three others of the American consulate in Benghazi were killed in an attack during protests over a trailer for the infamous movie, which depicts Mohammed as a child molester and a thug. There is an ongoing investigation as to whether the attack was planned, though witnesses note that a local Benghazi militia was on-scene and the motive was over the trailer. [Lily Dionne]: "It seemed like this cheesy, Arabian Nights type thing. That's the whole theme that we got from it. Nothing about Mohammad or anything was mentioned on set. [Oscar Roy, Military Hospital Director]: "Of the 23 cadets, and a non-commissioned officer, three were killed and three of them were taken to emergency because they were seriously hurt and we couldn't assist them here." The storm also caused extensive damage to houses and cars. Here a massive cellular antenna has fallen on a house. [Silvio Molinari, Local Resident]: "We calculated that it was a tornado that hit us because of the magnitude of the damages, this wasn't a normal storm. It was very quick. In less than two minutes, everything was already in chaos." Others homes were left without doors or rooftops. | NASA's Curiosity Rover Captures Mars Eclipse Posted: 20 Sep 2012 08:07 AM PDT | An eclipse is always special -- and this one is captured by Curiosity, as the Martian moon Phobos sails between the Red Planet and the sun... Full Story: NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has taken on a second job - moonlighting as an astronomer. Last week Curiosity outfitted its high-res camera with protective filters, and snapped pictures of the sun as Phobos, one of Mar's two small moons, sailed by. It was a tricky shoot. Phobos and its sister moon Deimos are closer to Mars than our moon is to Earth, so they shoot across the sky pretty quick. Fortunately Curiosity had a partner in the project - it's sister rover Opportunity on the other side of Mars. Between them they captured some great photos of the eclipse. But it isn't all about pretty pictures: the images should also help scientists learn more about Mars's internal structure. Like Earth's moon, Mars' moons have some gravitational pull that slightly change the planet's shape. | New Panda Cub Born at Smithsonian Zoo Posted: 20 Sep 2012 04:20 AM PDT | Smithsonian National Zoo's Panda Cam reveals first images of new panda cub. Panda fans welcome a new cub at Washington DC's Smithsonian Zoo. Mei Xiang gave birth to the cub late on Sunday, her second cub in 11 years at the zoo. Captured on the so-called Panda Cam, we can see Mei Xiang cradling her new cub. She picks it up in her mouth, positioning it to nurse and groom. Zoo officials say the panda cub weighs about four-ounces and would fit in the palm of a hand. On Tuesday the Panda Cam showed the mother moving around the den as the two-day-old cub squealed. According to the zoo's website, the cub's active movements and loud sounds are "two good signs that the cub is healthy. The popular giant panda was artificially inseminated in April by the zoo's other giant panda, Tian Tian. Female pandas ovulate only once a year making breeding difficult even under the best conditions. The zoo is giving Mei Xiang complete seclusion while she rears her cub. They will monitor her via closed-circuit camera for about two weeks before they enter the Panda house. The two giant pandas are on loan from China, where as few as 1600 are left in the wild. The pandas are part of an important research project that studies the habitat, breeding patterns, and social lives of pandas.
