Deaf Musicians in "Music of Silence" Band

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 04:28 PM PDT

The percussionists in this Sao Paulo school band can't hear the music. Instead, they feel the vibrations from the drums and speakers. Their teacher, Fabio Bonvenuto, started teaching deaf and hard-of-hearing pupils in 2005. Called "Music of Silence", the band also has hearing members. And Bonvenuto says that combination has produced positive changes. [Fabio Bonvenuto, Music Teacher] "The first thing we noticed was the change in the (deaf) students' social skills, since they began to interact more with others. They also learn to respect boundaries." Bonvenuto says the hearing-impaired process sound differently, but it's all done in the same part of the brain. The band even performs with other schools, which improves the kids' confidence and amazes their parents. [Fabio Bonvenuto, Music Teacher] "The families get involved. Many parents walk up to me and say: 'I didn't know my child was capable of playing music. I didn't know she was part of such a great project'." "Music of Silence" will hit its highest note in 2014 when the young musicians perform at the opening ceremony of the World Cup. Karishma's artwork is for Elephant Appreciation Weekend and around a dozen of her creations will be up for auction this Saturday and Sunday. The money will go towards the protection of Asian elephants, which are in danger of going extinct. [Elizabeth Callaghan, Elephant Keeper at Whipsnade Zoo]: "She did it last year, we had a very successful two days last year and so we thought we'd do it again. And one of her paintings actually went for just shy of 200 pounds, so very exciting." Karishma's trunk contains around 100-thousand different muscles. The finger-like feature at the end of her trunk enables her to pick up a small brush. Her caretaker says she loves the challenge of painting. [Elizabeth Callaghan, Elephant Keeper at Whipsnade Zoo]: "It's a type of enrichment, they love to learn. Elephants are so super smart so for them it's something new and exciting to do." Although Karishma loves the challenge of painting, she doesn't get to practice very much. Her talent is only showcased on Elephant Appreciation Weekend to help raise money for Asian elephants. [Elizabeth Callaghan, Elephant Keeper at Whipsnade Zoo]: "Both African and Asian elephants need help, but Asian elephants in particular. There's only about 30000 Asian elephants left in the wild, so for us it is just super ...

New Yorkers Camp Out for Latest iPhone

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 04:01 PM PDT

Dozens of Apple fans have been camped out ahead of the launch of the iPhone 5. Full story: iPhone enthusiasts are out in full force at New York's Fifth Avenue Apple store. They are camping out ahead of time for Friday's launch of the iPhone 5. And in keeping with the usual Apple pre-launch madness, about two-dozen have been camped out for over a week. [Hazem Sayed, 1st in Line at Apple's 5th Avenue Store]: "So we came Wednesday, my colleague and I, and sort of listened, watched the announcement of the new iPhone. And then, there was nobody in line at that point, then we decided we will come Thursday morning and we sort of stand. They didn't permit to have chairs so we were standing for the day." A sort of camaraderie has formed among those keeping the iPhone vigil. These iPhone die-hards rented a car together. Helpful on Tuesday night when a heavy downpour hit the city. [Jessica Mellow, 3rd in Line at Apple's 5th Avenue Store]: "The past couple nights we were able to get a car rental and park right there just right by the line and take turns holding the tarps down and sleeping in the car at night." Apparently people have been respectful enough to keep places for those in line, so fellow iPhone fans can take turns to go home and wash up. Some compare the experience to urban camping. [Roger Chinchilla, In Line at Apple's 5th Avenue Store]: "I figured since I can work from home I can work from anywhere. This is no different from me working from so home so I figured I'd be ...

Xi Jinping Meets Panetta, Appears Well

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 02:53 PM PDT

After his unexplained absence sparked rumors of health problems, China's leader-in-waiting Xi Jinping appeared well on Wednesday during talks with visiting US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. Xi had disappeared from public eye since the start of the month, and only appeared in a state-run media report this past Saturday. Today, after meeting with Xi, Panetta told reporters he looked to be healthy and very engaged. After Chinese authorities refused to explain Xi's whereabouts, rumors started to fly on Chinese internet that Xi's was in bad health, or may have even suffered an assassination attempt. According to US officials, Xi and Panetta discussed issues ranging from North Korea and the Chinese regime's maritime territorial disputes with neighboring countries. China has been gripped by a wave of anti-Japanese protests in recent days, as the disputes over a chain of islands in the East China Sea escalated. Tensions surged after Japan announced it would purchase the islands, which it calls Senkaku, from its private owners last week. During his meeting with Panetta, Xi warned Japan to, quote "rein in its behavior", state-run Xinhua News Agency reported. Panetta has been urging both Japan and China to reach a peaceful solution to the heated conflict. Xi Jinping is tipped to take over as the next leader of the Chinese regime later this year. His mysterious disappearance for two weeks fueled speculations about the ongoing political power struggle within the Communist Party ...

Xinhua Links Bo Xilai to Wang Lijun Trial

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 02:46 PM PDT

The bizarre story of Wang Lijun's dead of night escape to a US Consulate to seek asylum was because his boss slapped him. At least that's according to Chinese state-run Xinhua News Agency. Xinhua published today a detailed account of Tuesday's hearing against Chongqing's former police chief. It was the first time his former boss, Bo Xilai, has been linked to his wife's murder of a British businessman. Wang Lijun reportedly admitted to helping cover up Gu Kailai's murder of Neil Heywood. When he later mentioned the murder with the quote "principle person" in charge of the city—ie, Bo Xilai—Bo slapped him across the face. This apparently prompted Wang, well versed in marital arts, to flee to the US Consulate in Chengdu on February 6th. During his brief stay there, Xinhua reported Wang applied for political asylum. US officials had previously denied Wang sought asylum. Gu Kailai was tried and convicted in August for Heywood's murder. Bo Xilai's name was not mentioned in those court proceedings. With state-run media now officially linking Bo to the case, it appears Communist Party leaders are ready to make the next move against him. Bo was sacked as Chongqing's Party Secretary in March. So far, he's only been reported as under investigation for Party disciplinary violations. Wang Lijun faced two days of hearings this week—one held in secret—over charges of defection, bending the law for personal gains, abuse of power and taking bribes. Xinhua reports Wang admitted to all of ...

Jiamusi City: Police Abduct 15 Falun Gong Practitioners

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 02:40 PM PDT

On the evening of September 10, fifteen practitioners of the Falun Gong meditation practice were kidnapped from their homes in Jiamusi City, Heilongjiang Province. Amnesty International has released an urgent action appeal calling for their release. The arrests happened at two different homes. Twelve of the people kidnapped were women in their 40s to their 70s. An eight-year-old girl was also arrested. Neighbors told NTD that police were banging on their doors for three hours before they got a master key to break in. Neighbors witnessed the Falun Gong practitioners downstairs being tied with ropes or carried on stretchers. The homes were searched and personal property, including computers and printers, were confiscated. The operation was carried out by a variety of security and police divisions: the Jiamusi Municipal Public Security Bureau, the Public Security Bureau, the National Security Team, and Xiangyang Public Security Sub-Bureau. Qiaonan and Jianshe police stations and Xilin Police Station were also involved. Amnesty International's Corinna-Barbara Francis is handling the cases. [Corinna-Barbara Francis, Amnesty International China Researcher]: "So far as we know, there are still 10 persons being held in Jiamusi Detention Center. It is not reasonable that they were detained just because of their beliefs, rather than for committing crimes. We call on the Chinese authorities to immediately release them." Locals are also speaking up against the round of suppressions ...

Jerky Pet Treats from China May Kill Your Pet

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 02:34 PM PDT

Bad news for you animal lovers out there—the FDA is saying chicken jerky pet treats imported from China over the last five years to the US and Canada are being blamed for hundreds of deaths and thousands of cases of illness in dogs. It is estimated that nearly 86 million pounds of pet food was imported to Canada and the US from China in 2011. To date, product samples have been tested for all contaminants that may underlie the cause of the illness and deaths, but no one's quite sure what's making the animals sick. The majority of pets had gastrointestinal signs, including vomiting and diarrhea, sometimes with blood and/or mucus. More severe symptoms are pancreatic and gastrointestinal bleeding. Cases have been reported from all 50 US states and 6 Canadian provinces in the past 18 months. Pet treats, including jerky pet treats are currently considered the fastest growing segment in the pet food market. The FDA is now expanding its testing to include irradiation byproducts and is in consultation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) experts to discuss this possibility further. World Pole Climbing Championships in UK

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 01:46 PM PDT

World pole-climbing championships take place in rural England. Full Story: Pole-climbing had its championships on Saturday in Warwickshire, England, where competitors had to sprint 25 meters - up a timber pole. While the sport is around two decades old, it has its roots in lumberjacking, according to Terry Bennett, the organizer of the championships. [Terry Bennett, Organizer]: "It stems back from the large tree felling in America and Canada where the lumberjacks would scale up some of the largest trees in the forest." However, the field carries much more than foresters, now with even graphic designers in the mix. Current world record holder Grant Haller was crowned the world champion with a time of 10.13 seconds. The most interesting entrant, though, was probably George Tipping, whose age, at 79, is just shy of the 80-year-old tree he climbed. George uses pole climbing to raise money for cancer charity, having done for over 14 years, after losing his wife to cancer. For him, it's the first climb that's the hardest. [George Tipper, 79-Year-Old Competitor]: "I am out of breath when I get to the top, I am really out of breath. I'm even out of breath when I get down. But going up it doesn't seem to bother me. It's always the first climb of the show that I'm worried about and I find hard. Once I've got the first one over I'm alright." The World Pole Climbing Championships will be held again in the UK in two years. For more news and videos visit ☛ ntdtv.org Follow us on ...

EU-China Summit Media Conference Cancelled After Chinese Demands

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 01:36 PM PDT

As European and Chinese officials continue their debates in Brussels at the EU-China summit, the cancellation of the customary press conference scheduled for tomorrow's closing event is drawing questions. [Bruno Waterfield, Telegraph London Journalist]: "I would like to ask you some questions about spinelessness of EU officialdom in terms of the press conference." [Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen, European Commission Spokeswoman]: "The reference to spinelessness I do not understand. It does take, and I am sorry to repeat myself from the past, but it takes two spines to tango I would say." The conference would have featured EU leaders and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao. But according to one EU official, the Chinese regime insisted on being given a list of the names of the journalists that would be attending and have the right to vet them. The EU refused. [Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen, European Commission Spokeswoman]: "It was not possible to find conditions, to agree conditions that would have enabled the press conference that we would have liked to take place." The EU said it would hold a briefing for journalists after the summit, but without Chinese officials present. According to the International Press Association (API), Belgium's foreign press association, the Chinese delegation had requested limiting the press conference to 50 journalists, 25 accredited by the Chinese and 25 non-Chinese accredited by the EU. Similar issues prevented a press conference taking place last time the EU-China ...

Chinese Police Disperse Anti-Japanese Protesters

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 01:27 PM PDT

Protests in China were quelled today as Chinese authorities tried to bring life back to normal. The road next to the Japanese embassy in Beijing was opened again and the last protesters cleared from the sidewalks. The mess created by the protesters is being cleaned up and some Japanese businesses are cautiously opening their stores. Many Japanese businesses were targeted during the anti-Japan protests and some businesses were vandalized. Many Japanese stores put Chinese flags in their windows, hoping the patriotic symbols would dispel angry protesters. Some see the vandalism and insults against Japan as hurting Chinese interests. [Mr. Zhou, 61-year-old Retiree]: "Everything comes in phases. You shouldn't disturb people's lives. In the end, they've already expressed their patriotism, and as we say, "If you go too far, you've stepped out of line." Yesterday, September 18, marked the anniversary of an incident that led to Japan's invasion of northern China prior to World War 2. Protests sprung up around the country as anti-Japan sentiment swept the country. Yesterday, angry protesters surrounded US ambassador Gary Locke as he was driving into the embassy. Police quickly dispersed the protesters and no serious damage was done to the car. Some say that even after the significant date, they should continue to show their patriotism with more protests. [Chen Jie, Residential Compound Manager]: "I don't think that just because we've passed September 18th, the sensitive day ...

Tibertans Protest Outside of 67th UN General Assembly

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 01:12 PM PDT

More than 200 Tibetans demonstrated outside the United Nations on Tuesday (September 18). They urged world leaders to take action to help prevent more Tibetans from setting themselves on fire to protest Chinese Communist Party rule over Tibet. 51 Tibetans have self-immolated since the burnings first began in 2009, according to advocacy group Free Tibet. The Tibetan Congress of New York and New Jersey organized Tuesday's demonstration. Its spokesman, Tenyeng Yangsel, said the group had a message to those attending the 67th UN General Assembly. [Tenying Yangsel, PR Secretary of Tibetan Congress of New York]: "World leaders and the United Nations, we want to urge them to take multilateral action to push the Chinese government to stop the genocide and stop the terrorism inside Tibet." Tensions over Tibet are at their highest in years. The spate of protests against communist rule and self-immolations by Tibetan activists have prompted security crackdowns by Chinese authorities. [Tenzen Tashi, Protestor from Wisconsin]: "Every month four or five person burn themselves for free Tibet and nobody is hearing from us. So that is the message. Tibet is not part of China. Tibet belongs to Tibet and China out of Tibet now!" Activists say the Chinese regime has trampled on religious freedom and culture in Tibet since 1950, when the Chinese Communist Party took control of the region. Bad Tempered Elephant Crushes Cars and Trucks

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 09:04 AM PDT

Watch this bad tempered elephant bully cars and trucks in Cambodia. But don't worry -- there is a happy ending... Full Story: This elephant likes to play rough -- but not just with the rest of the herd, or even local villagers. No -- this Cambodian Bull elephant likes to play with cars, trucks, and anything else that happens to travel down National Road 48. And when he isn't charging at vehicles, he enjoys destroying buildings and crops, and has even injured cattle. Not surprisingly, villagers in the Koh Kong province have had enough. At the end of August a three-day operation was launched to locate the elephant and move him to a zoo near the capital. [Nick Mark, Director of Wildlife Alliance]: "He's caused a lot of problem along the National Road 48, caused several car crashes and he's been making inroads into the sugar cane plantation. Local people are kind of upset, a little angry. Although they all love him, they're kind of angry. If we don't capture him then he will cause trouble and ultimately will probably be killed himself." Luckily, the bad tempered elephant, known as Sakor, is going to the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre. Here he can splash in the water with the other rescued elephants, and may even one day get to be a dad. Anti-Japan Protests Amid China Power Struggles

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 03:26 AM PDT

Are these angry Chinese protesting against Japan out of patriotism, or is there more to the growing anti-Japan demonstration spreading across China? After this weekend's growing demonstrations against Japan, there have been reports that Chinese police may have played a hand in fueling the anti-Japan sentiment. Netizens have posted comments on Chinese Internet saying that some of the rioters were in fact police or security officials dressed in plain clothes. Some people identified this protestor in Xian as a local police bureau Chief. Several postings with the man's pictures have since been removed. On China's largest microblogging service Sina Weibo, the search term "police leading anti-Japanese marches" is blocked. NTD's senior China analyst Zhang Tianliang says the Chinese regime's security organ, the Political and Legislative Affairs Committee, may be orchestrating some of the protests. The head of security, Zhou Yongkang, is an ally of fallen politician Bo Xilai, and Zhang believes Zhou may be using the riots for his own political gain. [Professor Zhang Tianliang, NTD Senior China Analyst] "Whenever the CCP has internal worries, it often uses anti-Japanese sentiment as a distraction. But this time, the Communist Party leadership is fractured. Zhou Yongkang's faction doesn't want to give up power, and it's very likely the PLAC is behind the protests, because there have been numerous reports that military police and police are posing as protestors, and leading the riots ...

Protests in China on Anniversary of Mukden Incident

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 02:54 AM PDT

Today protests over the Diaoyu Islands continued in China, and coincided with an anniversary that normally brought up strong anti-Japanese sentiment on its own. Commonly known as the Mukden Incident, the event on September 18, 1931 triggered Japan's invasion of northern China during the Sino-Japanese war. The anniversary today further fueled anger against Japan, with more protests flaring up around China over the disputed chain of islands in the East China Sea. In Beijing, demonstrators hurled bottles and other objects towards the Japanese Embassy. In Shanghai, more than 1000 people marched towards the Japanese consulate. In a move that aggravated tensions between the two countries, Japan bought the islands, known as Senkaku in Japan, from its owners last week. In retaliation, the Chinese regime drew up a map to show that the islands as being a part of China. State-run media reported today that it's a step in solidifying China's ownership of the islands. Maná cemented their legacy on Monday as the Mexican rock band was inducted into Guitar Center's iconic Hollywood "RockWalk." The band was honored on Sunset Boulevard, recognized as being one of the most successful Latin bands of all-time and as an evolutionary force of the rock, blues and R&B genres. Their handprints join the likes of AC/DC, John Lennon, Run-DMC and Stevie Ray Vaughn. The group formed in 1986, featuring lead singer Fher Olvera, Ulises Calleros on guitar, Juan Calleros on bass, and Alex González on drums. Today, over two and a half decades later, Sergio Vallín now plays the guitar, but the band still creates an eclectic sound, mixing various genres from Latin pop to reggae, driving sales of over 30 million albums to date. The band tends to do well in Los Angeles as well, having sold out Staples Center a record eleven times. [Alex González, Drummer] "We recorded lots of records here in Los Angeles, so for us, being here and putting our hands in cement and being alongside some of the most amazing musicians that have walked the face of the earth, it is such a humbling honor. If we could inspire future latin musicians and achieve what Mana has done and some day have their hands in cement on the Walk of Fame, that would be a tremendous accomplishment for our band." In addition to their music, Maná has long been active in politics.
