Bonhams New York Auctions Iconic Iwo Jima Statue

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 04:29 PM PST

The original monument depicting the US victory in Iwo Jima during World War Two will be sold at auction in New York. Full story: It's one of the most iconic images from World War Two—US Marines planting the US flag at Iwo Jima after a long, hard-fought battle against Japan in 1945. Now Bonhams auction house in New York are selling the monument in its "World War II: The Pacific Theater" sale on February 22. A sculptor serving in the US Navy, Felix De Weldon, famously created the monument in 1945. It was made from a Pulitzer Prize winning photograph taken by Joe Rosenthal on February 23 the same year. Military historian and collector Rodney Hilton Brown rediscovered and refurbished the monument. [Rodney Hilton Brown, Owner of Monument]: "Most people when they think of the Iwo Jima monument, they think of the 80 ton bronze that is in Arlington today. They don't know there was actually a first original Iwo Jima monument from 1945, the last year of World War Two. But this is it. It stood in Washington, DC in front of the old Navy Department building for three years before they decided to build the Pan American Union building there. So they took it down and they took it to Quantico to model the monument." Brown says the monument depicting five marines and a navy corpsman is more than a show of military might. [Rodney Hilton Brown, Owner of Monument]: "It symbolizes courage, devotion, patriotism, sacrifice, working together and the moment of the flag raising was really the ...

Russian Towns Fight Over World's Coldest Place Label

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 04:23 PM PST

With temperature routinely dipping to -80 degrees Farenheit, two towns deep in Siberia are competing for the honor of being the world's coldest inhabited place. Full story: While many people this time of year are weathering the wintry cold, few have it worse than those in the Yakutia. Some 9000 miles east of Moscow, the Siberian town of Oymyakon isn't what most would consider a tourist destination, though it could be for perhaps the most adventurous. A sign on the road towards the town centre reads "Oymyakon, the Pole of Cold," referring to its status as the world's coldest inhabited place. The lowest temperature ever recorded here is 67.6 degrees Celsius below zero, or negative 90 degrees Farenheit. And over 500 people live here throughout the year, carrying out their routine seemingly undisturbed by the climate. Local lumberjack Alexei Yergorov does well, as the need for burning wood will keep him busy until the short summer. [Alexei Yergorov, Lumberjack]: (Male Russian) "When I was still at school, I remember, every year we had minus 60-61 degrees. It's every year like this, at least 10 days in a row." However, 600 miles north of Omyakon, another Yakutian town also claims to be the world's coldest inhabited place. Verkhoyansk experiences many similar temperatures, and the town also has a "Pole of Cold" sign. However, a local ethnographer vehemently denies the claim. [Tamara Vasilyeva, Ethnographer]: (Female Russian) "A misprint appeared in some document saying that in ...

Unseen Video of Russian Meteor Strike Emerges

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 03:41 PM PST

New amateur video of the meteorite that exploded over Russia's Ural mountains emerges as scientists discuss the possibility of a global asteroid-warning system. Full Story: New footage of a meteorite exploding across the sky over the Russian region of Cheliabinsk near the Ural mountains. Amateur videos continue to emerge days after the meteorite struck the area, damaging buildings, shattering glass and sending more than 1000 to hospital with cuts and scrapes. Search teams have descended on Lake Cherbarkul, where the meteorite crashed Friday, to look for remains, but have been unable to find any large pieces so far. Residents have also joined the search and claim to have found a few fragments themselves. The Russian space agency said the fireball was travelling 30 km per second and although it did not kill anyone, the meteorite caused around $33 million in damage. This prompted scientists on Monday to discuss the possibility of an early warning system for the planet that would encompass telescopes and anti-asteroid missiles. [Vladimir Lipunov, Head, Space Monitoring Laboratory, Moscow University]: "How many telescopes do we need? That depends on the field of view. It is now possible to build telescopes of 4 to 8 square degrees. We need 10 to 20 telescopes around the Earth, dozens of them." NASA estimates the meteorite was 17 metres across and weighed about 10000 tonnes before entering Earth's atmosphere and exploding with nuclear bomb force. For more news and videos visit ...

"The Family Line" Dating Song a Surprise Hit

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 02:31 PM PST

A Singaporean band's Lunar New Year music video about the pressures on those in their 20s to date, get married, and have children is a surprise hit in the city state. Full Story: A Singaporean band has produced this surprise hit, just in time fo the Lunar New Year. The song "The Family Line" by The Animal Parade is about receiving pressure from older relatives to get married and have children. Uploaded to YouTube just three weeks ago, the song been seen nearly 50000 times. The band's lead singer says that Chinese New Year is when relatives begin offering relationship advice in what seems to be changing times. [Tan Siling, Lead Singer]: "What they noticed is that the younger generation, they tend to switch boyfriends or girlfriends pretty often, and that worries them, because they start to wonder, are you dating for fun? Are you serious about it? What is it really about? They can't grasp the concept of dating a few boys in their lifetime." The average age of marriage had risen by 2 years between 2001 and 2011, from 26 to 28 for women and 28 to 30 for men. Tan Siling hasn't reached that age yet herself, but perhaps the catchy tune that's been resonating with some of country's youth will help alleviate any pressure from her relatives. More on our China Blog: e.ntd.tv In an interview with Kachin Alliance Spokesperson N Sang Gum San, NTD probes China's relationship with the Kachin people and the Burmese government. _________________________________________________ More about the Kachin people From: e.ntd.tv The Kachin encompass a number of ethnic groups speaking almost a dozen distinct languages belonging to the Tibeto-Burman linguistic family who inhabit the same region in the northern part of Burma on the border with China, mainly in Kachin State. Strictly speaking, these languages are not necessarily closely related, and the term Kachin at times is used to refer specifically to the largest of the groups (the Kachin or Jingpho/Jinghpaw) or to the whole grouping of Tibeto-Burman speaking minorities in the region, which include the Maru, Lisu, Lashu, etc. The exact Kachin population is unknown due to the absence of reliable census in Burma for more than 60 years. Most estimates suggest there may in the vicinity of 1 million Kachin in the country. The Kachin, as well as the Chin, are one of Burma's largest Christian minorities: though once again difficult to assess, it is generally thought that between two-thirds and 90 per cent of Kachin are Christians, with others following animist practices of Buddhists.

CCP's "Purging the Party": Response to A Serious Crisis

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com Under the CCP's (Chinese Communist Party) long-term one-party dictatorship, China's social conflicts are becoming increasingly deep. Civilians show their anger toward the regime with uprisings, breaking out one after another. In recent years, over a hundred million Chinese further joined the movement of quitting the CCP and its affiliated organizations. As a response to this unprecedented crisis of survival, lately the CCP continuously releases suggestions of "purging the party." It claims that the number of CCP members will be controlled in a more strict way and some of them will be "cleared out." CCP's official media Xinhua Agency recently published a report in Outlook Weekly about a politburo's meeting. It revealed that the politburo required to enhance member management and dispose of unqualified members in time. The Outlook Weekly's report cited the words of Xin Ming, professor at the Central Party School. Xin said, the presence of many unqualified CCP members had led to a decline in the party's "battle effectiveness." Xin Ming claimed that the CCP is not a "political club" and the membership applicants should be consistent with the party in ideology and class attitude. The report mentioned that the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) carried out a research on the number and quality of party members in 2010. It showed that the standard of joining the party had dropped every time massive ...

In a province famed for its frenetic capitalism, he demanded a return to traditional Leninist discipline. New York Times reported Xi's talk on "lessons from the Soviet Union". The report stated that Xi's talk betrayed his fear and worry that social problems in China might cause the Party's collapse. As reported by New York Times, "When China's new leader, Xi Jinping, visited the country's south to promote himself before the public as an audacious reformer following in the footsteps of Deng Xiaoping, he had another message to deliver to Communist Party officials behind closed doors." "Why did the Soviet Union disintegrate? Why did the Soviet Communist Party collapse? An important reason was that their ideals and convictions wavered," Mr. Xi said. "We absolutely cannot allow any subversive errors when it comes to the fundamental issues," Mr. Xi told party officials in Guangdong. "If that happens, there will be no going back." A summary of Xi's comments has circulated among officials but has not been published by the state-run news media. Since Bo Xilai was detained and interrogated, he hasn't been cooperative with the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection in charge of the investigation. Bo once said that if he's sentenced on any criminal offence such as corruption, bribery or harboring, he wouldn't accept it. In fact he would even report evidences of others' crimes that are even worse than his. This makes Bo's case very tough for the CCP. The report quoted information from Beijing high level that if Bo doesn't cooperate and does something shocking during the trial such as reporting higher level CCP officials it will lead to serious political consequences. Even if the trial is not broadcast live, having a few people in court is still an unaffordable political responsibility. Wang Qishan, new chief of the CCP Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) echoes Xi in high-profile. Yet in practice, does the CCDI have oversight of the CCP General Secretary and State President? Can the local CCDI authority supervise local Party chiefs? Yao Jianfu, a former think-tank for ex-CCP leader Zhao Ziyang, asks, "Who can supervise the CCDI? Who can supervise the CCP Central Committee and its chairman?" Let's see what Mr. Yao can tell us on the issue. Yao Jianfu, author of "Chen Xitong's Personal Statement", has contacted several former CCP senior officials, among them Xiang Nan, Bao Tong, and Chen Xitong. Yao found that they all disapproved of the way the CCDI dealt with their cases, and none of them have admitted faults. In May 1989, Bao Tong, a CCP Central Committee member and labeled "a villain" by Deng Xiaoping, was put in Qincheng prison. Over there, two CCDI directors announced that Bao Tong had seriously violated criminal law. Both claimed that the Politburo had decided to expel Bao from the Party and from all his posts. Bao Tong immediately refuted the Politburo's right to convict him. Yao Jianfu: "The CCDI sometimes deals with senior officials from a standpoint of political struggle.
