A global performance tour featuring Chinese acrobatics, songs and dances received a warm welcome and applause from audience members in Hong Kong after a performance in the city's Convention and Exhibition Center Sunday night.

More than 30 artists, including popular Chinese singers Dong Wenhua and Yan Weiwen, performed a selection of classic Chinese songs and dances to a packed audience of roughly 8,000, including Tung Chee-hwa, first chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

The grand show, titled Culture of China, Festival of Spring, is part of a global tour launched in 2009 by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of China's State Council to entertain overseas Chinese during the Chinese New Year season.

This season, 11 performance troupes will visit 57 cities around the world with large overseas Chinese populations.

The annual show has taken the stage in Hong Kong since 2011 and has grown in popularity and influence, according to Yu Guochun, president of the Hong Kong Federation of Overseas Chinese Associations.

The global tour will move on to cities like Auckland, Sydney and Los Angeles before it ends in Macao in March.

Cities see excessive pollution during holiday

BEIJING - Festival fireworks caused readings of PM2.5 to skyrocket in many cities during the Spring Festival holiday, indicating worsened air quality, the Ministry of Environmental Protection said.

Figures released Sunday by the ministry show that 42.7 percent of 74 Chinese cities reported higher-than-normal PM2.5 reading. The highest average reading in a single day was 426 micrograms per cubic meter, or 5.7 times the country's standard of 75 micrograms.

PM2.5 refers to fine particulate matter that is 2.5 microns or less in diameter.

PM2.5 readings were excessive in all 74 cities for about half of the holiday period, which lasted from February 9 to 15, the ministry said.

North China's Tianjin muicipality saw PM2.5 level hit 577 micrograms per cubic meter from 10 a.m. February 9, or Lunar New Year's Eve, to 2 a.m. February 10. The readings were the highest among all 74 cities.

According to the ministry, a certain proportion of the cities also saw excessive readings for PM10 and sulfur dioxide (SO2).

The ministry blamed fireworks and unfavorable weather conditions for the worsened air quality.

Beijing to construct new subway line

BEIJING - Construction of a new subway line will start next month in Beijing to help ease traffic in the Chinese capital.

The No.16 Line, which will link the Yongfeng high-tech industrial base in the north with Lugouqiao town in the south, will pass through downtown Beijing. It is expected to be put into operation by the end of 2016, the Beijing City Subway Construction Management Company announced Sunday.

The line with 24 stations, including 11 transfer stations, will be 36 km long. It will cost about 36 billion yuan (5.78 billion U.S.dollars), according to the company.

Beijing added four new lines to its operation on December 30, 2012, bringing its track length to 442 kilometers, the country's longest.

The city's subway system is expected to carry approximately 10 million passengers daily this year, surpassing the world's busiest subway in Moscow, which transports 9 million passengers each day, according to statistics from Beijing's transportation department.

By 2015, the number of subway lines in Beijing will reach 19, with a combined length of 561 km. By 2020, the total subway length is expected to increase to 1,000 km.

Shanghai official probed over property

SHANGHAI - Authorities in east China's Shanghai said on Sunday they are investigating a local official after he was reported to own a large villa, a property that would usually be out of the financial reach of such an individual.

A recent Internet post claimed Lu owned a large house on 2,000 square meters of land.

An initial probe showed the main building of Lu Ming, deputy head of the Pudong New District government, had a floor area of 247 square meters with a 63-square-meter affiliated one-story house, said a Shanghai discipline inspection source.

Lu's family built the house in their own dwelling place, said the source, adding authorities were continuing the investigation.

The surrounding walls of the house and land have been dismantled after the exposure.

Several officials have been targeted with the exposure of their property scandals by whistle-blowers in China since last year as the ruling party vows to continue fighting corruption.

In early February, a police officer was dismissed by authorities as he reportedly owned 192 houses with double national identity cards.

GUIYANG - A total of 110 people who had close contact with two patients contracted avian influenza H5N1 in Southwest China's Guizhou province earlier this month have been released from quarantine, local health authorities announced on Sunday.

Two residents of the provincial capital of Guiyang were reported to have contracted the H5N1 virus on February 8. The health authority put 110 people who had close contact with the two patients under quarantine, according to the provincial government's emergency response office.

They were released as no abnormal symptoms were discovered.

One patient, a 21-year-old woman, died of multiple organ failure on Wednesday. The other patient, a 31-year-old man, is still receiving medical treatment.

No new avian influenza H5N1 cases have been reported, according to the office.

The human-transmissible form of avian influenza, also known as bird flu, is an acute respiratory infectious disease mainly caused by the deadly H5N1 virus subtype. Main symptoms include high fever and pneumonia.

Human infections of bird flu are usually caused by the transmission from poultry to humans. There have been no reported cases of sustained human-to-human transmission.
