New York Times Hacked By Chinese For Investigating Chinese Premier Posted: 05 Feb 2013 12:33 AM PST | The New York Times has reported that their computer systems were repeatedly attacked by Chinese hackers. The US newspaper linked the hacking to its investigation into Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao's family wealth. The US daily paper the New York Times on Thursday said hackers, possibly connected to China's military, stole their reporters' email passwords, alleging it was linked to an earlier feature article exploring Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's amassed wealth. The computer security firm Mandiant, which was hired to investigate and block the breach, found that the attacks used strategies similar to ones used in previous hacking incidents traced to China, the New York Times report said. The Chinese government responded that it was "irresponsible" to jump to unproven conlusions. According to Mandiant's report, the hackers routed the attacks through computers at US universities and installed a strain of malicious software, or malware, to gain access to The Times's network. The attacks reportedly started from the same university computers that, in the past, had been used by the Chinese military to attack US military contractors. If you look at each attack in isolation, you can't say, 'This is the Chinese military,'" said Mandiant chief security officer Richard Bejtlich. However he added that "when you see the same group steal data on Chinese dissidents and Tibetan activists, then attack an aerospace company, it starts to push you in the right direction." New York Times Claims Hacker Attacks from China Posted: 31 Jan 2013 02:23 PM PST | The New York Times is reporting it has been the victim of persistent, repeated cyber-attacks from China for the past four months. The Chinese hackers attempted to gain access to the Times computer systems and obtain passwords of its reporters and employees. The hackers have been expelled from their systems, the Times reports, after their security experts tracked the hackers movements. The paper says it has implemented stronger security defense. The attacks coincided with an investigative report by the New York Times, published on October 25th last year. It alleged that the family of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao had amassed a multi-billion dollar fortune. The hackers managed to break into the e-mail account of the Time's Shanghai bureau chief David Barboza. He was the author of the report. They also gained access to Jim Yardley's account. He was the Time's bureau chief in Beijing. He currently now works as the bureau chief in India. China Hacks The New York Times for Exposing Corrupt Leaders Posted: 31 Jan 2013 01:46 AM PST | For the last four months, Chinese hackers persistently attacked the New York Times, infiltrating its computer systems and stealing the corporate passwords for every Times employee, and then used them to gain access to the personal computers of at least 53 staffers. The attack seems to be a direct retaliation for an investigative piece The Times published on Oct. 25, that found that the relatives of Wen Jiabao, China's prime minister, had accumulated a fortune worth several billion dollars through questionable business dealings. All of the information sought by the hackers was related to the Wen family investigation. The attacks started from the same university computers used by the Chinese military to hit United States military contractors in the past. No customer data was stolen from The Times, according to the newspaper's security experts. It seems this story is part of a broader computer espionage campaign against American news media companies that have reported on Chinese leaders and corporations. Last year, Bloomberg was targeted by Chinese hackers after it published an article about the wealth accumulated by relatives of Xi Jinping, China's vice president at the time. Xi became general secretary of the Communist Party in November and will become president in March. So if you missed these stories, it seems there's some information the Chinese government really doesn't want us....or more importantly its own people to know. So of course we've linked both of these ... | Views: 1235 46 ratings | Time: 01:28 | More in News & Politics |
