Shanghai clamps down on noise pollution Posted: 27 Feb 2013 05:20 AM PST A new regulation against noise pollution will take effect in Shanghai on Friday, with offenders facing a fine of up to 500 yuan ($80). The new regulation was announced by the municipality at a news conference on Wednesday. It covers specific punishment for noise pollution in public spaces, residential communities and from the commercial sector. No musical instruments or audio equipment will be allowed in parks and other public areas between 10 pm and 6 am. The rule also allows park administrators to curb noise from morning exercise-takers and from karaoke singing. The regulation has provisions against noise from metal-cutting, stone processing and retail businesses. It also includes soundproofing standards for new homes, and working hours for home decoration projects, with no noise-making activities allowed between 6 pm and 8 am on weekdays, or all day on weekends. Offenders will face a fine of 200 to 500 yuan by the public security department. The city's environmental departments receive about 27,000 complaints about noise every year, and the problem is especially serious in summer, according to Wu Qizhou, deputy director of the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau. |
Ikea sells locally made meatballs with imported food Posted: 27 Feb 2013 05:20 AM PST Meatballs are still being sold along with other imported food at Ikea's Swedish food market in Tianjin, despite horsemeat being found in meatballs sold at Ikea stores in Europe, the Tianjin-based City Express reported on Tuesday. Ikea insisted in a statement on Tuesday that all meatballs it sells and serves in China are not imported from eastern Europe, but are produced in Xiamen. Although the place of production is clearly stated on the meatball packages, many Tianjin customers were quoted as saying it is misleading for Ikea to sell and promote the meatballs with other imported food. An Ikea staff member in Tianjin quoted by the newspaper failed to explain why they are being sold with other imported food. A public relations manager with Ikea in Beijing said the meatballs are sold at the Swedish food market "because their flavors are Swedish". |
Shanghai's tax revenue declines after reform program Posted: 27 Feb 2013 05:20 AM PST Shanghai's annual tax revenue declined about 20 billion yuan ($3.2 billion) in 2012, after the city launched a pilot tax reform program to replace business tax with value-added tax, which aims to avoid duplicated levies. Hu Lanfang, deputy director of the local tax bureau, said that by the end of 2012, a total of 159,000 companies were included in the pilot program. Taxation was clearly reduced for small-scale taxpayers and services-export companies, the Shanghai-based China Business News reported on Wednesday. Another 10 provinces and regions are likely to join the tax reform program soon, the Finance Ministry said last week. The program is expected to be expanded nationwide during the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-15) period, and will help to reduce several hundreds of billion yuan in taxes. In 2012, the tax reform program helped to cut 42.6 billion yuan in taxes for companies in the pilot areas, according to the ministry. |
Carlsberg to increase stake in Chongqing Brewery Posted: 27 Feb 2013 05:20 AM PST Chongqing Brewery Co Ltd, one of China's largest beer makers, said on Tuesday that Carlsberg Brewery Hong Kong Ltd is planning to increase its shareholding in the company. The company's shares were suspended from trading on Tuesday. Carlsberg Hong Kong has promised to make a decision on the deal within five days of the suspension, when trading will resume. As the wholly owned subsidiary of Danish premium brewer Carlsberg Group, Carlsberg Hong Kong increased its stake in Chongqing Brewery to 29.71 percent in 2010, becoming the company's largest shareholder. Analysts said that expanding its footprint in China is very important to Carlsberg. Carlsberg Group's revenue increased only 3 percent year-on-year in 2012, with growth in the Asian market reaching 9 percent, while in China the figure was more than 4 percent, according to its financial report. In June, the Danish brewer located its second-largest brewery globally in Dali, Yunnan province. |
