Father of China's Great Firewall - China Take - February 18,2013 - BONTV China Posted: 18 Feb 2013 11:11 PM PST | Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode Fang Binxing - principal of the University of Posts and Telecommunications in Beijing - has earned the reputation as the mastermind behind what is popularly known as the Great Firewall -- or GFW for short -- a vast, sophisticated filtering and blocking system which stops domestic internet users from accessing websites the authorities deem suspect. While not watertight, the system does a fairly good job in keeping Chinese net users away from sites with which the government apparently believes they are unable to cope. Many of these sites are overseas-based and victims of the great firewall include Facebook, YouTube, Twitter -- even the movie database iMDB! Fang's name began trending this time after he posted an innocuous 'Happy New Year' message on his official Weibo microblog account. The comment function on Fang's account has been disabled since it was deluged with abusive messages shortly after he opened it. This meant microbloggers could only voice their discontent with Fang by reposting his message and adding their own comments. And tens of thousands this time added one word to Fang's message - the Chinese character "gun" meaning something like "go to hell" in English. In the past expressions of displeasure with Fang haven't always been virtual -- the anger turned physical on one occasion when he was hit with a shoe as he delivered a lecture at Wuhan university. The anonymous thrower has since become something of an online hero ... | Views: 1 0 ratings | Time: 02:06 | More in News & Politics |

North Korea third nuclear test - China Take - February 14,2013 - BONTV China Posted: 17 Feb 2013 11:16 PM PST | Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode In the middle of the Chinese New Year Holidays and as President Obama prepared to give his State of the Union address North Korea defied the Global Community -- and the UN Security Council -- by carrying out a third nuclear test on Tuesday. The Security Council resolution approved unanimously last month promised "significant action" in the event of a new nuclear test. For its part, North Korea said the test was merely an act of self-defense against "US hostility" and threatened further steps if necessary. In response the UN called the test "a clear threat to international peace and security"; President Barack Obama said it was a "highly provocative act" that hurt regional stability. And China not only expressed its strong "dissatisfaction and opposition to the test" through the Foreign Ministry, but also called in the North Korean ambassador to express its dissatisfaction in person -- an unusually strong step for the Chinese government in dealing with its ally and neighbor. China also approved a UN security council statement after an emergency meeting on Tuesday; this said the UN would pursue a new resolution that contains "appropriate measures." | Views: 7 0 ratings | Time: 01:46 | More in News & Politics |

Water to be valued at $150B in China - Biz Wire - February 13,2013 - BONTV China Posted: 17 Feb 2013 07:59 PM PST | Go to www.bon.tv to watch the full episode Follow us on Weibo weibo.com or Twitter.com/ChinaBizWire Despite uncertainty in China's economy, Paris-based Suez Environnement plans to invest more in the country, where environmental protection and sustainable development are becoming the top priorities for the central and local governments. Jean-Louis Chaussade, CEO of the group, said he's seen an increasing awareness in sustainable development in China. He says the slowdown shouldn't impact companies in the field of the environment, where China is still investing a huge amount of money. Chaussade says Suez Environnement will continue heavy investment in the water and waste sector worldwide by about 1.5 billion dollars this year after posting revenue of 19.8 billion dollars in 2011. The company has been expanding rapidly in China, setting up two to three new joint ventures every year, and now has 27. In 2011 the company had income of more than 1 billion dollars from its activities in China. Chaussade has also seen strong business growth in the US and Australia but says China is the market with the most potential, especially when dealing with its scarcest resource, water. Though China accounts for about 20 percent of the global population, its freshwater resources are just 7 percent. Increasing water demand driven by the country's rapid urbanization, growing middle class, and higher sanitation requirements greatly adds to the pressure on supplies. For Chaussade, the most ... | Views: 9 0 ratings | Time: 03:39 | More in News & Politics |

Toll holiday = traffic nightmare? - China Price Watch - February 13,2013 - BONTV China Posted: 17 Feb 2013 07:46 PM PST | Much of this financial cost remains on the books of local governments, but the country has also decided to put much of the cost on the backs of people using the infrastructure. That's especially true for China's highways, where tolls designed to cover the cost of construction are extremely high. Driving from Beijing to Shanghai, a trip of around 800 miles, would cost 1000 yuan or $160 in tolls alone. By comparison, driving the 500 miles from San Francisco to San Diego would cost exactly zero dollars in tolls.
