The paper reported that "government officials in some cities are overstating economic output, tax receipts, corporate revenue and profits" as based on company executives in China and Western economists. But China's National Bureau of Statistics, which compiles most of the country's economic statistics, denied that any economic data was overstated. Currently, China's purchasing manager's index has been shrinking for 8 straight months. This index is a good barometer of the country's manufacturing sector. Apart from the PMI, a look at the electricity production and consumption are also signs of the economic activity. Some experts say that skepticism on the accuracy of Chinese economic data is nothing new. Baijia Yan begins when Dong women bring food out to you from bamboo baskets, and display them on a table for you to sample.
