Official vows to ensure data authenticity Posted: 19 Jun 2012 09:42 AM PDT Updated: 2012-06-19 23:20 ( Xinhua) BEIJING - China's top statistician Ma Jiantang said Tuesday that the National Statistics Bureau (NBS) will be able to ensure the "authenticity, accuracy, integrity and timeliness" of important data through tightened auditing at various government levels. The NBS has sent inspection teams to 32 provincial-level governments, 348 city-level governments and 857 county-level governments since 2005, said Ma, director of the NBS, at a national conference on statistical management. He said the country's statistical management is standing at a new historical starting point and authorities must work to strengthen their statistical capacity, as well as improve the quality of statistics and government data credibility both now and in the future. The inspection teams are responsible for auditing a slew of major economic data, including the consumer price index and property prices. They will also conduct surveys on impoverished people and migrant workers, according to Ma. Inaccuracies in statistics once aroused the keen attention of China's top leadership. The State Council, China's Cabinet, held a meeting in October 2004, urging statistics bureaus to provide authentic data that policymakers can refer to. Also in October 2004, a vice chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, the top legislature, demanded a nationwide campaign to "squeeze out the false elements in statistics."
Food safety training courses launched Posted: 19 Jun 2012 09:42 AM PDT Updated: 2012-06-19 21:58 By Zheng Xin ( chinadaily.com.cn) Training courses for food safety management staff started in Beijing on June 19. Staff from some 200 restaurants in the capital will be given courses during the two-day training sessions on operation specifications, food safety regulations and development trends of the catering industry, said Xu Jinghe, head of the Department of Food Safety Supervision at the State Food and Drug Administration. "As members of the public are getting more and more concerned about food safety issues, it is necessary to enhance the supervision of the government and the companies' self-discipline," Xu said. According to a report by the Chinese Cuisine Association, the catering industry in China exceeded 2 trillion yuan in revenues last year for the first time. However, food safety regulations are not always followed. "It's necessary to enhance awareness among the employees of the industry," Xu said. Further training will be conducted in July in Harbin, capital of Northeast China's Heilongjiang province.
Beijing plans new energy-efficiency standards Posted: 19 Jun 2012 09:42 AM PDT Updated: 2012-06-19 21:47 By Zheng Jinran ( chinadaily.com.cn) New design standards for residential buildings that aim to save energy will be released in the third quarter in Beijing. The standards "will be put into effect soon after the release, putting Beijing ahead of other cities in China in building energy efficiency", said Liu Xiaoqun, an official in charge of building energy conservation at the Beijing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, on Tuesday. Under the standard, new and existing residential buildings in Beijing should cut energy consumption per unit area by 75 percent from the standard implemented in 1980. "The municipal government has taken comprehensive measures to reduce energy consumption, such as reconstruction of existing residential buildings in 2012, and promoting the concentrated use of solar water heaters in 2011," Liu said. "Thanks to the good performance of thermal insulation in these structures, residents can pay less for heating in winter." Energy-efficient buildings account for more than 77 percent of all residential structures in Beijing. The central government has allocated 1.98 billion yuan ($312 million) for reconstructing existing residential buildings covering the three years starting in 2011. More funds will be allocated for this program.
7 dead after minivan plunges in SW China Posted: 19 Jun 2012 09:42 AM PDT Updated: 2012-06-19 21:13 ( Xinhua) GUIYANG - Seven people were confirmed dead on Tuesday and two others remained missing after a minivan fell into a reservoir in Southwest China's Guizhou province on Sunday, rescuers said. Rescuers had pulled the wreckage ashore and retrieved seven bodies, including the bodies of two children, from the reservoir as of Tuesday, according to the rescue headquarters at the site. The search for the two missing people is ongoing, the headquarters said. The accident happened at about 2:40 pm on Sunday, when an eight-seat minivan carrying 15 passengers fell into the Shiqiaohe Reservoir in Pu'an county, according to the county government. Six people, including the driver, have been rescued, while nine others were reported missing after the accident. The bus was carrying people home from a local fair, and the driver, a teacher from a local middle school, is being interrogated for illegal operation, police said. The reservoir is 20 meters deep and the water is murky -- factors that have increased the difficulty of the rescue work, local officials said.

In particular, Hu said China will continue to pursue a proactive fiscal policy and prudent monetary policy, maintain the continuity and stability of the macroeconomic policy, and make macro-regulation more targeted, flexible and forward-looking.
