| Posted: 21 Jan 2013 11:47 AM PST BEIJING - China's meteorological authorities said Monday that central and east China will be shrouded in fog through Tuesday morning. The National Meteorological Center (NMC) issued a blue alert for the fog. Blue is the lowest level in China's four-tier color-coded weather alert system. Fog will lower visibility to less than 1,000 meters in parts of Tianjin municipality and the provinces of Hebei, Shandong, Shanxi, Henan, Jiangsu and Anhui, with visibility dipping as low as 200 meters in some areas, according to a statement on the center's website. The NMC also said that a cold front will sweep most parts of north China from Wednesday to Thursday, bringing strong winds and dropping temperatures by 6 to 10 degrees Celsius. |

The promotion was questioned by netizens due to her age and the fact that her husband's uncle is a senior official of the Liaoning provincial government. Local authorities insisted that the promotion was done according to the law, the People's Daily reported on Monday. | Chinese authorities ban 55 TV ads Posted: 21 Jan 2013 11:47 AM PST BEIJING - China's top broadcasting watchdog has ordered a broadcast ban for 55 advertisements for consultation and TV shopping services, as they have violated relevant regulations. The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) on Monday released a circular saying that advertisements that were recently broadcast during some TV programs have violated SARFT regulations, although details concerning which stations the ads were broadcasted on were not revealed. Among the banned ads is a watch advertisement that uses the name of former Chairman Mao Zedong, violating a SARFT regulation that forbids the use of state leaders' names in advertisements. Other ads for dieting solutions and breast enlargement were banned for false or misleading content. Creators of televised shopping programs have been criticized for fraudulent practices, including the sale of shoddy products. | Shanghai sees real estate growth Posted: 21 Jan 2013 11:47 AM PST Investment in real estate development reached 238 billion yuan ($38.2 billion) in Shanghai in 2012, a 9.7 percent year-on-year increase, according to a Jan 21 report from the Shanghai Municipal Statistics Bureau. In 2012, newly developed commodity real estate in Shanghai reached 27.2 million square meters, a 25.2 percent year-on-year decrease, among which 15.6 million sq m was for housing, a 36.8 percent year-on-year decrease. Sales of commodity real estate was 19 million sq m, among which 16 million sq m was for housing. The average price of newly developed commercial real estate in 2012 was 21,412 yuan per square meter, down 0.8 percent from 2011; the average price of housing apartments was 14,061 yuan, a 3 percent decrease from 2011. Yan Jun, Chief Economic Engineer with the Shanghai Municipal Statistics Bureau, said the figures show that policies to enhance the welfare of Shanghai's residents have been effective, and measures to control increasing housing prices have worked well. |
| Tenant ordered to pay for neighbor's fire losses Posted: 21 Jan 2013 11:47 AM PST A tenant and his landlord have been ordered to pay a total of 89,000 yuan ($14,311) in compensation to the owner of the next door flat that was damaged by a fire, Shanghai Pudong New Area People's Court ruled on Jan 21. The fire broke out in August 2011 in the makeshift flat of a tenant surnamed Liu. The fire soon spread to his neighbor Qi's flat, causing extensive damage. According to Fu Xinzhen, a court official, Liu is responsible for 50 percent of his neighbor's losses caused by the blaze, which totaled 112,000 yuan, for using a poor quality gas appliance that is likely to have started the fire. The fire accident report prepared by Pudong district's fire department ruled out the possibility of arson, climatic factors, spontaneous combustion and electrical failure. Liu's landlord Xi was ordered to pay 30 percent of the total loss in compensation, which is 33,000 yuan. The court said both properties are illegal makeshift flats. |
