China's netizens are demanding increased access to more detailed water quality information, after a news report included worrying figures on the quality of urban tap water in China. The original report, published by the magazine Century Weekly earlier this month, revealed that nationwide inspections conducted in 2009 showed only around 50 percent of China's tap water meet national standards, and sparked intense discussion among China's netizens concerned about the quality of urban drinking water. The original story was reposted on microblogs nearly 1 million times within one day of its release. But last week, figures released by the Urban Water Quality Monitoring Center, under the administration of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MHURD), showed that up to 83 percent of China's urban drinking water is safe to drink. The Director of the Center, Shao Yisheng, said that the figure was from a recent round of quality inspections conducted in 2011, under a set of new standards for the quality of drinking water. The new standards were revised and issued by the Ministry of Health in 2006, and are set to come into effect across China from the beginning of July this year. Shao also said that the water quality inspections carried out between 2008 and 2009 by MHURD revealed that only 58.2 percent of tested water qualified under the new standards. Many have urged related departments to release more details on water quality, such as which cities have water that does ...

Beijing cleans its fuel-Media Watch May 19 - BONTV

Posted: 21 May 2012 12:29 AM PDT

Beijing will introduce new fuel standards that municipal officials say are nearly on par with the European Union's Euro V on May 31. All fuel sold by retailers in the Chinese capital will be required to adhere to the new standards, which are expected to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions from 50 to 10 milligrams per kilogram, according to the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau. The production of low-sulfur fuel will increase costs, said Fu Xingguo, an engineer at Sinopec Corp, China's largest oil refiner. However, the price of fuel will not be raised in the coming half year. "The new Beijing V standard fuel will greatly reduce the amount of pollutants in the air, including PM 2.5 (particulate matter with a diameter smaller than 2.5 micrometers)," said Li Kunsheng, director of the bureau's vehicle management department. "The capital will become the first to meet the benchmark nationwide." Li also said cleaner fuel will increase engine efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. With more than 5 million automobiles in the city, car exhaust is definitely the major source of PM 2.5 in Beijing, Li said.

Only students in honors classes can study in classrooms fitted with air-conditioning systems at a local school in Shenzhen, Guangzhou Daily reported Tuesday. Shenzhen Binhe Middle and High School has 11 classes for 10th-graders, and four of them are "honors classes". The newspaper reported that classrooms for regular classes are fitted only with fans, while those of honors classes are equipped with air-conditioning. "The best one of the four honors classes has four air-conditioning systems in its classroom," a student, whose alias is A Ping, told the newspaper. At the Binhe school, students with good scores on the High School Entrance Examination study in honors classes, which is a common practice in China. School authorities usually assign experienced and competent teachers for honors classes, and those elite students are expected to enroll at renowned universities in the country. A Ping said students in regular classes want to buy air-conditioning with their own money, as it is getting hotter. But their request was denied by school authorities, even when the students offered to pay for the electricity. The electricity in honors classes is paid for by the school, according to the newspaper. "The school has a plan to teach students in accordance with their aptitude. It is not appropriate to allow students to buy air-conditioning for themselves. We may be put under investigation by education authorities if we allow such a practice," Binhe school's director of executive ...
