New restroom rules - China Take May 30 - BONTV

Posted: 30 May 2012 07:58 PM PDT

Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode This relates to the new guidelines released by a Beijing local government department on hygiene and cleanliness standards for public restrooms in the city. Now these caused a bit of a stir when it emerged that one of the criteria for a "clean rating" was that no more than two flies may be present in any public restroom and no more than two pieces of litter could be found on the floor. Many who use public restrooms in Beijing - or any other Chinese city -- may feel that counting flies, or pieces of paper on the floor - might be the health and safety equivalent of rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

BYD stock tumbles after crash - Biz Wire May 29 - BONTV

Posted: 29 May 2012 08:25 PM PDT

Go to www.bon.tv to watch the full episode Follow us on Weibo weibo.com Warren Buffet-backed BYD took a dramatic drop on the stock market yesterday, falling roughly 6% on the Hong Kong exchange. The company saw a loss of 230 million US dollars in market value. Market watchers say the unexpected slump is due to a car wreck over the weekend. A Nissan GTR crashed into two taxis, one of which was BYD's E-6 electric model. The car then caught fire, leaving one driver and two passengers dead. And even though the other taxi flipped, it did not catch fire. Consumers have blamed the tragedy on BYD, saying that problems lie in its electric model. They're especially upset because BYD has marketed this car for China's public transportation systems, with one of the main selling points being its safety and low-explosion risk.A spokesman for BYD says the company is now conducting an investigation into the accident and will publicly report the results. Many experts believe the fire could be due to the car's lithium battery.

Youth and religion-Media Watch May 29 -- BONTV

Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode Located in downtown Beijing, Yonghegong, a Tibetan Buddhist temple with a history of more than 300 years, attracts thousands of pilgrims and visitors every day. The lamasery, also know as Lama Temple, received an estimated 1.7 million visitors last year, with around 60000 visitors each day during the peak season of Spring Festival. Liu Junhong, from Shanghai, has visited many temples across the country, but she says Yonghegong has a richer religious environment than others. According to Li Decheng, a religion researcher at the China Tibetology Research Center in Beijing, Chinese people's understanding of religion has changed, and young people no longer see religion as "spiritual opium," a term often attributed to many communist thinkers. Li continues that Today religion is usually interpreted in a cultural perspective, and is regarded as a personal choice or heritage of values. The change reflects that Chinese society, especially the younger generations, is becoming more inclusive. The China Religion Report 2010 by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences says more than 100 million Chinese are religious believers with young people accounting for a third of the total.
