Preliminary results in Egypt's presidential poll suggest the Muslim Brotherhood candidate and a military officer closely linked to the ousted Hosni Mubarak have garnered the most votes. Mohamed Mursi and Ahmed Shafiq could be headed for a run-off poll.

Shafiq was Mubarak's last prime minister. Some Egyptians fear that a victory for him would undermine the change sought by the anti-Mubarak uprising. But a win for Mursi would herald a rule by Islamists.

After long months of struggle, ever since the January uprising last year, uprising leaders are now stuck with a riddle amid the preliminary results of the presidential elections. The results announced by the state news agency stated the lead in the race for Mohamed Morsi, the Muslim brotherhood leader and Mubarak's former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq.

Ezzat Shaaban, Political Analyst, Middle East News Agency, said, "The results of the elections is 100% correct and it represents the Egyptians' will. They wanted to have shafiq and morsi head to the final round and this is the Egyptian will."

Ahmed Maher, Fouder April 6th Political Movement, said, "The Brotherhood have a huge experience in organizing elections and mobilize votes and supporters towards voting unlike most of the other candidates. Shafiq has the support of the former ruling party, state security officers, and corruptive members of former regime and that's why he won."

The results have created confusion among people who didn't want the final race to be between the former regime and neither the Brotherhood. The undecided and boycotters to the upcoming runoff scheduled for the 16th of June seemed to be rising.

"The revolution came for the social justice and the freedom. It created the election and results are a direct outcome of our freedom. Whether Ahmed Shafiq or Mohamed Morsi it will remain to be the people will and freedom. I hope Morsi wins. I am disappointed that the previous regime is joining the race."

"The result seems heading towards the Muslim brotherhood and I don't want the brotherhood to win. I wish Lt general Ahmed Shafiq wins. I voted for Hamden Sabahy and yet the results went to the brotherhood."

"The preliminary result leaving a brotherhood member and a former administration member for the final race and round left the supporters confused. Both contenders now are attracting the losing candidates supporters in order to win this historic race. Sherif el Touny, CCTV, Cairo."

The British government has condemned the Houla massacre in Syria. It called the killing of children "pure naked savagery" and says military intervention is becoming more difficult to avoid.

Alistair Burt, UK Minister for the Middle East, said, "We are not planning military action and we've already expressed our concerns in relation to putting more arms and weaponry in the area, but if massacres like this are to continue, if situations like this gets worse, then I'm not sure it's possible for the international community to say at this stage that no further action could possibly be considered in any circumstances. So nothing is being planned, but the danger is that things are steadily getting worse, it's entirely in the hands of Syrian regime and Assad to do something about this and he should take the opportunity as quickly as possible."

Hundreds of protesters have marched through the streets of Bergamo in northern Italy. They were protesting against Prime Minister Mario Monti's government and its austerity measures.

The people of Bergamo are fed up with their prime minister and his austerity measures.

The banner "Enough with Monti, enough with taxes" was in response to a speech by the prime minister at the city's tax police.

Italy's public finances are strained and public debt is equivalent to about 120 percent of gross domestic product.

Monti's technocrat government has imposed some 30 billion US dollars' worth of tax hikes.

Equitalia, the agency which collects taxes and fines, has been targeted by a string of attacks and threats by desperate small businessmen as well as anarchist groups.

The acts of violence have been generally condemned. But many commentators have expressed sympathy for the struggling tax payers and slammed authorities for a heavy-handed approach.

The government has faced particularly strong resistance in the prosperous regions of the north. Tax increases are seen as props for the poor and corruption-riddled southern regions.

Monti says "separatism" is not the answer, but acknowledges citizens from the north have a right to be especially concerned about tax evasion.

The prime minister's personal approval ratings have dropped sharply. Local election results this month showed a surge in support for protest parties opposed to his government.

Members of the Portuguese Communist Party have marched to protest against austerity measures.

The Lisbon protest was aimed at an agreement signed last year between the government and the so-called Troika, consisting of the International Monetary Fund, European Central Bank and EU.

In return for a 97 billion US-dollar bailout, the government has cut the benefits of public workers and increased taxes, transportation prices and electricity prices.

The protest comes as representatives of the Troika are in the country for regular checks of whether Portugal is complying with the terms of the bailout agreement. But the majority of Portuguese people do not welcome the deal. They blame the austerity measures for Portugal's third recession in four years and a record unemployment rate of more than 15 percent.
