Lhasa development impresses Greek delegation

Posted: 29 May 2012 07:47 AM PDT

The Tibetan people have the right to choose how they want to live and to pick their own development methods, a senior executive at the Hellenic-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry said on Tuesday during a visit to the Tibet autonomous region.

"I have seen and come to know the good and honest Tibetan people through visits and exchanges with them in Tibet," said Athanassios Frontistis, a member of the Hellenic-Chinese chamber's board of directors and vice-president of the organization.

Frontistis and others with the chamber arrived in Tibet on May 25 for a four-day visit. They went to Lhasa, the capital, and the Lhokha prefecture.

"On a visit to Tibet University, I found the university is devoting itself to carrying forward and developing Tibetan history and protecting traditional Tibetan culture and arts," Frontistis told China Daily.

"And when I visited the grand Potala Palace and Barkor Street, which has a history of more than 1,300 years, I saw that traditional Tibetan historical relic buildings have been well protected," Frontistis said.

"The street is huge. The crowds of people and the shops doing brisk business present a scene of harmony," Frontistis said.

Frontistis said Lhasa is a clean city and people there pay special attention to protecting the environment. "We can say that today's Lhasa is the city of the people of Lhasa," Frontistis added.

In addition to visiting scenic spots, relic sites and local businesses, the group met Dong Yunhu , head of the region's publicity department to exchange views on Tibet's economic, cultural and political development.

Dong said Tibet is expected to learn from experience and expand cooperation with Greece in the tourism industry.

"Greece has its advantages in developing its tourism industry," Dong said.

Constantine Katsigiannis, a member of the Hellenic-Chinese Chamber, said the group was struck by the profound cultural and natural beauty and surprised to see Tibet's rapid economic growth.

"In addition to commerce and trade, Greece is considering increasing cooperation and exchanges with the Tibet autonomous region in the cultural industry in the following years," Katsigiannis said.

He said he was surprised to see Tibet's great achievement in economic and social development.

Spyros Xanthis, also vice-president of Hellenic-Chinese Chamber, said: "Last November, China and Greece successfully organized the Third Forum on the Development of Tibet in Athens, to discuss the development of Tibet's economy, culture, tourism, environmental protection, health, sports, education, science and technology, and we began to know Tibet from the forum," said Xanthis.

"We can learn more about the mysterious region via the visit to Tibet," he said

He added that he could sense the Chinese government has invested heavily in promoting Tibet's economic and social development .

Established in 1995, the Hellenic-Chinese Chamber is a non-governmental organization in Europe.

The groups arrived in Beijing on May 23 at the invitation of the Information Office of the State Council to start a weeklong visit to China.

In the Chinese capital, they met Wang Chen, minister of the Information Office of the State Council, Wang Jinzhen , vice-chairman of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, and Ma She , deputy director of European affairs department of the Ministry of Commerce.

The Greek delegation also visited the Great Wall and the Forbidden City in Beijing.

An 18-year-old man was required to pay 59,362.5 yuan ($9,391) in compensation for not rescuing a drowning boy in Jinhua, Zhejiang province, the Qianjiang Evening News reported.

On July 22, the young man went to the home of the 7-year-old boy and invited him to go out to play.

According to the report, the boy's mother, surnamed Xu, didn't give her son permission to go out because he had a lot of homework to do.

However, the boy sneaked out without being noticed. He and several other children gathered around the young man and played at the riverside in a neighboring village.

As Qianjiang Evening News reported, the boy fell into the river with another child while playing. The panic-stricken children on shore asked the 18-year-old man, the eldest among them, to save the two boys in the river but he ignored their appeal.

The children pulled one boy onto the shore, but failed to save the 7-year-old because he was too far to catch.

A grieving and angry Xu sued all of his sons' playmates as well as their parents.

The local court only convicted the 18-year-old man. The court ruled that the man, who had brought the children to play at the water's edge and didn't save the drowning boy, should bear corresponding liability for compensation.

Chinese enterprises join in Rio+20 Earth Summit

Posted: 29 May 2012 07:47 AM PDT

Twenty-one private enterprises from China will join in China Going Green Dialogues as a part of the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development, known as Rio+20, that will come in June in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

The Chinese enterprises - including real estate giants such as Vanke and Vantone, Esquel Group from the textile industry in Hong Kong, and the community supported organic farm Little Donkey in Beijing - were selected by the SEE Foundation, Shan Shui Conservation Center and Greenovation Hub, all active environmental NGOs in China.

Hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme, the China Going Green Dialogues are a series of events that will answer the call for a global revolution toward green and sustainable development models. The events are expected to fuel substantive breakthroughs in supply chain management, greenhouse gas quantification, eco-friendly technology and clean manufacturing.

At the Rio+20 Conference, world leaders and thousands of participants from governments, the private sector, NGOs and other groups will come together to make plans to reduce poverty, advance social equity and ensure environmental protection with the aim of securing a livable future on the ever more crowded planet.

Representatives from the UN and international and Chinese NGOs will join some of China's key enterprise leaders in a number of forums on June 17 and 18 at Rio+20.

Discussions will offer a view on the present and future state of green economies in China.

Sun Shan, executive director of Shan Shui Conservation Center, said: "The growth of China's green economies has just started. We hope Rio+20 will offer the international community a window into how China is taking action from the ground up."

Simultaneously, the events will profile the diversity of Chinese grassroots organizations in their 20 years of development, as well as the innovative green practices that are emerging out of China's economic and social growth.

An increasing number of companies are taking interest in Rio+20 and looking for ways to deliver their commitment to help China go green. Rio+20 will present an opportunity for Chinese businesses and entrepreneurs to exchange experiences with peers from around the world, to share expectations of and a mutual faith towards the future of green economies.

Taking the theme "Green Economy", Rio+20 aims to hasten a global revolution in economic development. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called it "one of the most important conferences in the history of the United Nations".

The first UN Conference on Environment and Development held in 1992 in Rio - from there, the name Rio+20 - made great strides in initiating dialogue on how to tackle the degradation of the environment. It was at that conference that the concept "sustainable development" was proposed.

In 1992, China sent a government delegation to participate in the conference. Now Chinese NGOs will represent the new face of the country at Rio+20, which will be the first global summit on sustainable development attended by Chinese entrepreneurs.

In addition, China's rapidly growing philanthropic sector and non-public funding foundations are bringing more possibilities for Chinese NGOs to engage in environmental issues and expand their partnership with the corporate sector.

"Our purpose is not only to learn, but also to give something back, to step onto this global stage at Rio and carry home, back to China, a commitment," said Feng Lun, chairman of Vantone, also chairman of SEE Foundation, pledging that the foundation would, in next five years, help 500 environmental NGOs with no less than 500 million yuan ($78.8 million).
