| Movie "Devils on the Doorstep" Banned Posted: 18 Oct 2012 09:37 PM PDT | Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com The movie "Devils on the Doorstep" was directed by Jiang Wen in mainland China in 1998. It received the Grand Jury Award at the Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2000. In 2002, it won the best foreign language movie at Mainichi Film Awards in Japan. The win triggered deep thinking within the Japanese people regarding the war. However, the film doesn't comply with the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) rule, and was banned in China. Recently, Prof. Su Mu at Beijing Film Academy revealed a report by China State Administration of Radio Film and Television (SARFT). Let's take a look. SARFT's report claimed that in the film, Chinese people don't show enough "hatred and revolt" towards the Japanese. And instead, they are shown to display ignorance, apathy and servility. SARFT also said that the film doesn't correctly display the cruelty of the Japanese army. The film highlights the Japanese flaunting their invasion, thus the fundamental direction of the film is "incorrect." The story is shown from a unique angle. It tells of the ordeal between a Chinese villager and Japanese soldiers in a Hebei village during the Anti-Japanese war. The story is based on the novel "Survival," written by You Fengwei. The movie has a lot of changes compared to the original novel. Film critic Li Xiangrui said that the original story emphasizes Chinese soldiers and civilians courageously resisting the Japanese invasion. [Glenn Ey, Rescued Yachtsman]: "It's undeniable when a massive wave picks you up and just turns you over. I don't think there is anyone who would deny being concerned and you do think your number's up." An Air Canada Boeing 777 flying from Vancouver to Sydney was asked by AMSA to divert to the area where an emergency beacon was activated. [Glenn Ey, Rescued Yachtsman]: "I did hear the jet, I was down below, I did hear the jet." The political thriller is based on a true story of an unusual rescue mission which took place during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. As a third time director, Affleck reveals that it was challenging to make a film about real life events. [Ben Affleck, 'Argo' Director and Actor]: "It's very hard; you have two responsibilities—you have to make the best movie possible as a director, but you also have to maintain true to the spine of the story. So you know this story is true but there are things, there are omissions, compressions, some embellishments. I had to remember that it's not a documentary. You want to tell the trust of the story but make it really exciting and fun and funny for an audience to watch, otherwise they will never see the movie and no one will care." The 40-year-old also stars in the movie, taking on the lead role of Tony Mendez—the CIA operative who managed to sneak 6 American diplomats out of Iran during the infamous hostage crisis. [Ben Affleck, 'Argo' Director and Actor]: "Well it's funny; Tony Mendez resonates completely with me, with the exception of risking my life and being hero, the rest I can really get behind." Mendez manages to pull off his operation by disguising the diplomats as Canadian film crew making a fictitious film called "Argo." | Massive Riot in Sichuan after Truck Driver Death Posted: 18 Oct 2012 03:28 PM PDT | Angry scenes broke out in Luzhou, Sichuan province on Wednesday following the death of a truck driver. Up to 10000 people joined the riot which soon became violent. Clashes broke out between rioters and police, and several police cars were overturned and torched. Witnesses say the driver was beaten to death by three traffic police after an argument over where he parked his truck. [Mr Chen, Luzhou Resident] "After the traffic police came, they asked the driver to get out of the car and show his license. Then other police came and they were arguing. The police pulled the driver out of the car, and the others started to beat him. Then the driver fell on the ground. The police kicked him twice and asked him not to play dead." State-run media reports denied that the driver died from the beating. The Global Times cited a local official who said, quote "the driver died of an acute disease during the law enforcement process." Another witness said the truck driver did indeed tell police he was ill, but his plea was ignored. [Luzhou Resident] "That driver was telling the traffic police, I'm sick, please get me my medicine [from the truck]. But the police told him to keep pretending and didn't get the medicine for him, and continued to stomp on his fingers." News of the truck driver's death and the protest quickly spread online. | Chinese Question Elaborate Farewell to Former Cambodian King Posted: 18 Oct 2012 03:21 PM PDT | Flags flew at half-mast across Beijing on Wednesday. It wasn't for the death of a national hero, and there wasn't a national disaster—but the show of respect was for former Cambodian King Norodom Sihanouk. And some Chinese are questioning why. Sihanouk passed away on Monday in Beijing, after years of battle against cancer. Top Communist Party leaders have paid tributes to Sihanouk, calling him an old friend of the Chinese people. Guangzhou resident Mr. Xu did not share that feeling, saying Sinahouk has contributed nothing to China. [Mr Xu, Guangzhou Resident] "This move by the Chinese government is not representative of the will of the Chinese people. It's just something the government is doing alone." On Wednesday, as a motorcade carried Sihanouk's body in a golden coffin to the Beijing airport, Chinese flags were flying at half-mast. The high-profile journey drew questions from netizens. Some did not think Sihanouk deserved it. This blogger writes: "Flags did not fly at half-mast after so many drowned in the Beijing floods, in the Tianjin shopping mall fire, or in the Hong Kong ferry crash. Now that Sihanouk, who's been living off taxpayers' money, dies, you lower the flag." Similar comparisons have also appeared on Chinese Internet. Sihanouk has been living in China since the 1990s. The former Cambodian King had earlier sought refuge there two decades ago, after being overthrown in a coup. He later reclaimed his throne, and enjoys considerable support from Cambodians ... | Views: 3 0 ratings | | Time: 01:54 | More in News & Politics |

| China, S.Korea Express Anger over Japan's War Shrine Visit Posted: 18 Oct 2012 03:15 PM PDT | On Thursday 67 Japanese lawmakers visited a memorial shrine in Tokyo dedicated to soldiers of World War II. Among those visiting the shrine was Shinzo Abe, former Japanese Prime Minister and current head of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party. Other notable figures included former PM, Junichiro Koizumi, and two cabinet ministers, Yuichiro Hata and Mikio Shimoji. The visit sparked outrage from Japan's Asian neighbors over what they say is a slight to history. The Yasukuni shrine memorializes those fallen during World War II, and includes some 14 recognized war criminals among its dead. Japanese soldiers were known for their brutal war tactics and for enslaving some 200-thousand Korean women as sex slaves. Japan has refused to compensate the women for the crimes, saying it settled the matter in a 1965 treaty. The treaty was a deal between governments that traded economic benefits for grievance claims. China was also a victim of Japanese brutality during World War II and is expressing its disapproval of the Japanese lawmaker's visit. At a news conference today in Beijing, China's Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Hong Lei, called on Japan to acknowledge its bloody history. He asked Japan to reflect upon its militaristic past and face up to its crimes. The visit may aggravate already strained relations Japan has with both its neighbors. China and Japan are in a headlock over some resource rich islands in the East China Sea called the Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan. Zue Shumei is known as "the Basketball Granny", and at 75 yrs old would put a lot young of basketball players to shame. Every morning she arrives at the basketball court at seven am and takes 200 shots, hardly missing a single one. But her routine doesn't end there. To keep her muscles strong she climbs up a tall metal pole. After that she swings from a set of monkey bars to strengthen her arm muscles. And it's not just some hobby she picked up recently. This athletic granny has been doing it for the past 23 years. Students at Zhejiang Normal University claim she is a legend and an inspiring role model. | China's Economy Sees Seven Quarters of Slower Growth Posted: 18 Oct 2012 02:34 PM PDT | China's economy slowed for a seventh straight quarter in the third quarter. It's the first time it's missed the government's target since the depths of the global financial crisis. The National Bureau of Statistics announced today (October 18) that GDP grew 7.4% between July and September from a year earlier. Spokesman for the Bureau blames the sluggish growth on the downturn of the global economy. [Sheng Laiyun, Spokesman, Bureau of Statistics] "Of course this is the result of the continuing underlying influence of the international situation and the international financial crisis. China's external demand is getting increasingly smaller, which is placing a lot of pressure on China's economic growth, to the extent that our rate of economic growth has continued to go down." One day before the official figures, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said the Chinese economy has stabilized though he warned that difficulties remain for the last quarter, according to state-run media. Some analysts now believe the Chinese economy has already bottomed out. But that was already the consensus earlier this year, and growth has continued to slow. Author and economist Gordon Chang had told NTD earlier that official growth figures are not reliable, and that other indicators can give a more realistic picture. For example, electricity usage growth is at around half the average rate compared to the last five years, which points at a further slowing down of the economy. | HK's National Education Course Continues to Draw Protests Posted: 18 Oct 2012 02:31 PM PDT | Hong Kong's controversial government-backed national education course continues to fuel protests. On Wednesday, thousands rallied outside the government headquarters, loudly making their points heard. Dressed in black, those opposed to the course are demanding it be pulled. A smaller group of protestors, dressed in white, said the course was a good idea. Police were on hand to keep the two camps separated. The demonstration remained peaceful, with protestors making speeches and singing songs. The heatedly debated course was planned to be mandatory for primary school children when school started last month. Hong Kong's government said the National Education Course would teach kids about China's history and instill nationalism. But with teaching references containing materials that praised the Communist Party while criticizing the US democratic system, opponents say the course was a veiled attempt to "brainwash" students. Outrage over the course drew thousands of protestors in September, and eventually forced Hong Kong authorities to back down. Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying announced the course would not be mandatory, but stopped short at heeding calls to pull the course completely. Opponents, many of whom are young students or graduates, say they do not trust Leung Chun-ying. Leung is seen as a handpicked leader by Beijing, and is working to bring Hong Kong under communist rule. | Greece Brought to Standstill by Nationwide Strike Posted: 18 Oct 2012 01:32 PM PDT | Greek public and private sector workers go on a nationwide 24-hour strike shutting down transport, offices, shops, schools and services. A new general strike is occurring in Greece, as for the second time in three weeks, workers protest austerity measures required for the bailout agreements. The country was brought to a standstill. Public transport stopped, schools closed, and boats remained moored at docks. Taxi drivers, hospital staff, teachers, and air traffic controllers were among the many groups to join the 24-hour strike. Unions are hoping to send the message to the European Union and the International Monetary Fund that the spending cuts they demand are too much for Greeks to withstand. [Petros, Civil Servant]: "I join strikes and I believe that these austerity measures are too much for the Greek people to bear, and I think they should have a say in things." Greece is preparing to cut 11.5 billion euros of cuts to receive another 31.5 billion in aid, part of a deal for a 130 billion euro bailout. However, with the country expected to run out of money next month, it has little choice but to push for the relief package. During the protests, there were some clashes with police in Athens; parts of Styntagma Square were closed off in preparation for rallies at the Greek Parliament. However, as of now, the Square has reopened to traffic. Full Story: Prince William, Duke of Cambridge on Wednesday attended a function for the St Giles Trust, a charity which helps ex-offenders break the cycle of crime. Prince William is the patron of the trust, and on the 50th anniversary of the organization, he praised their good work. [Prince William, Duke of Cambridge]: "Before I visited Saint Giles Trust the first time in 2009 I wondered how such a relatively small organization could make such a difference. Within minutes of meeting the volunteers and staff and observing their relationship with their clients I had my answer. Ladies and Gentlemen, the people of St Giles trust, who give their lives helping others. People like Junior, who will speak to us later, are beyond praise. They understand what their clients are going through because in many cases, they have been there themselves. They know what its like to have no hope, no path to a better life. Its because of this that they also know how to restore hope and unlock a better future for those that they help." The event was arranged by the October Club, and held at the Savoy hotel in London. Full Story: The fall out continues over the doping scandal that has engulfed former cycling champion Lance Armstrong. On Wednesday Armstrong stepped down as chairman of the Livestrong cancer support charity he founded. On the same day the disgraced cyclist was dropped by his sponsors Nike. [Katherine McLane, Livestrong Foundation, Communications Vice President]: "There have been a lot of controversies in the news recently about issues from the cycling world and Lance as this organization's founder has such a deep, deep emotional and even financial investment in the success of this organization. His family donated six and a half million dollars to this organization and he's very committed to seeing it succeed. The last thing he wanted was this organization to be effected in any way negatively by that controversy. So he decided that the best course was for him to step down as chairman." Armstrong founded the Lance Armstrong Foundation in 1997, not long after being diagnosed with testicular cancer. The organization launched the Livestrong brand in 2003 as it widened its cancer patient-support services. The foundation is now known by both names. | China Focus - Why China Doesn't Fix the Biggest Threat to Stability: Forced Evictions Posted: 18 Oct 2012 08:55 AM PDT | It's such a problem that China's Premier Wen Jiabao has called it one of the biggest threats to China's political stability: Forced Evictions. That is, when local government or Party officials kick people out of their homes without consent. Most of the time, it's because the officials want to sell that land to private developers for a massive profit...in return for massive kickbacks. Forced evictions are illegal according to international law, such as the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights that China signed in 2001. Yet it's happening to hundreds of thousands of Chinese citizens—mostly farmers—every year. There are tens of thousands of anti-government "mass incidents" every year in the Chinese countryside. And most of them are over forced evictions. People are furious about it and it's causing widespread protests. So why doesn't the government just put an end to it? | Views: 59 7 ratings | | Time: 13:39 | More in Shows |
