Full story: A Pakistani girl shot in the head by Taliban gunmen is doing well and has been able to stand again for the first time, doctors at the British hospital treating her said on Friday (October 19). Malala Yousufzai, who was shot for vocally opposing the Taliban, was flown from Pakistan to Birmingham, UK to receive treatment after the attack earlier this month, which drew widespread international condemnation. She has become a symbol of resistance to the Islamist group's effort to deny women education and other rights. Yousufzai was shot as she left school in Swat, northwest of Islamabad. The Taliban said they attacked her because she spoke out against the group and praised US President Barack Obama. The alleged organizer of the shooting had been captured during a 2009 military offensive against the Taliban, but released after 3 months, according to 2 senior officials who spoke to Reuters. In a detailed statement about Yousufzai's injuries, Rosser said she had suffered fractures to the base of her skull and to the bone behind her left ear. Her left jawbone was also injured at its joint. | Killed for Organs: China's Secret State Transplant Business Posted: 20 Oct 2012 01:18 PM PDT | It's being called "abhorrent" and a "crime against humanity." Allegations of forced organ harvesting in China started to surface in 2006. Since then, mounting evidence suggests these allegations are true—and even worse than originally suspected. Prisoners of conscience—especially Falun Gong—are being killed for their organs. Starting in 1999, the number of transplant centers in China increased by 300% in just 8 years, even though China has no effective national organ donation system. 1999 was the year the Chinese regime began persecuting adherents of the Falun Gong spiritual practice, sending hundreds of thousands to labor camps. Many of them were never seen again. Transplant medicine was developed to save lives. But in China, innocent people are being killed for their organs—so they can be sold for profit. Increasingly, doctors, congressmen, international politicians, human rights lawyers, journalists, and people around the world are raising awareness about forced organ harvesting. Share this video with your friends, family, and everyone you know. | First Native American Saint Heals Flesh Eating Bacteria Posted: 20 Oct 2012 06:49 AM PDT | First native American saint to be canonized on Sunday for healing a boy fighting flesh eating bacteria. Full Story: Catholics in and around the US community of Fonda, New York, are celebrating this weekend. Tomorrow, the town's Catholic heroine Kateri Tekakwit will become the first Native American saint. Although she died 300 years ago at just 24, the church contends her spirit is still capable of miracles. According to the Vatican, she healed a five-year-old boy struck by deadly flesh eating bacteria in 2006 thanks to the family's prayers. [Father David White]: "And his family prayed specifically to Kateri and whatever the details of it were the infection just dried up and healed and that doesn't happen medically." The saint-to be was born in 1656 to a Mohawk father and an Algonquin-Christian mother. When she was just four, a small pox epidemic left her badly scarred and nearly blind, but her injuries didn't stop her from devoting herself to Christianity. Pilgrims believe the waters at Kateri's shrine still have healing powers. [Joe Fondano, Kateri Devotee]: "My friend who lives in Watervliet now, his sister received that water and she had this type of cancer and she was diagnosed and it completely went away." The community plans to hold a special ceremony on Sunday to recognize Kateri's sainthood. Full Story: Hundreds of Peruvians rally against a potential pardon for former president Alberto Fujimori. The one-time leader is serving a 25-year prison term for corruption and human rights abuses. But he is battling oral cancer and Peru's current president is said to be considering a pardon. That prospect upset many who lived through Fujimori's long autocratic rule. [Gisela Ortiz, Relative, Cantuta Massacre Victim]: "It truly makes us indignant that the long, 20-year struggle by relatives to defend our right to justice is suddenly endangered by some sort of political negotiation to benefit a murderer responsible for violating human rights." [Vince O'Conor, Osan Air Power Day Committee Chairman]: (English, male) "Bringing both warriors and assets from both the United States and the Republic of Korea together in one place, it gives an opportunity to learn about one and another, our capabilities, learn from each other. Full story: A young male elephant who shot to fame as 'Mr Shuffles' seriously injured zookeeper, Lucy Melo, at Sydney's Taronga Zoo on Friday (October 19), by pinning her against a bollard. The incident had occurred around 11:30 am, when Melo was with the elephant during a routine training session in the enclosure, in which young elephants learn to wash themselves. Two other keepers helped move the elephant away and paramedics moved in, later taking Melo to the Royal North Shore Hospital, where she remains in critical but stable condition. [Andrew Wood, Acting Inspector, New South Wales Ambulance]: "Once she (Melo) went into cardiac arrest. They worked on her for about five minutes and then her heart... she started breathing again on her own. She has pretty major chest injuries at the moment." The zoo is investigating the incident. [Cameron Kerr, Taronga Zoo Director]: "It is surprising and we'll be reviewing the situation very carefully to understand what might have caused this." Melo has reportedly worked with the two-and-a-half-year-old elephant, Pathi Harn—which means "miracle" in Thai—since his miraculous birth at the zoo. | EU Members Agree on Bank Supervisor for Eurozone Posted: 19 Oct 2012 06:23 PM PDT | EU leaders reconvene for a second day of talks in Brussels over an EU banking Union. Full story: On Friday European leaders in Brussels took the first step deciding the union's banking system. This decision is seen as key to resolving euro zone debt crisis that has been plaguing the union for the past three years. They agreed to create a single supervisor to oversee all euro zone banks starting in 2013. It's not yet clear what powers that supervisor will have, or how many banks it will monitor. But EU officials said that eventually six-thousand lenders would gradually come under its supervision. Banks receiving state aid will come first, followed by the larger cross-border institutions. [Francois Hollande, French President]: "This evening, with the banking union, we managed to get back stability and efficient mechanisms necessary for tomorrow to avoid a banking crisis. I think for the markets and public opinion, for all those who are waiting for Europe to get back on track, it was a good evening." The banking supervisor opens the way for the euro zone's rescue fund to inject capital into struggling lenders. The leaders left one of the trickiest issues to the side - what representation non-euro zone banks will get under this new supervision. Non-Euro Zone countries like Britain are concerned their banks could end up at a disadvantage. Other obstacles still have to ironed out, but it's the right move for the euro zone, says Angus Cambell from London Capital Spreads. | Google's Faces "Horrible" Quarterly Results After Recent Highs Posted: 19 Oct 2012 06:08 PM PDT | Analyst says Google's disappointing quarterly results will set the company back, and possibly distract the company's management. Full story: Investors used to steady rapid growth from Google Inc. were stunned on Thursday. The Internet giant's quarterly results fell well short of Wall Street's expectations, wiping more than 9 percent off its market value. The disappointing numbers on Thursday came hours ahead of schedule in a rare instance of premature filing. Google blamed the misfire on an unauthorized submission by its financial printers, RR Donnelley & Sons Co, but later confirmed the numbers'. The report revealed a weakening in Google'sInternet advertising and continual losses from its cell phone business, Motorola Mobility. Google is the world's No. 1 Internet search engine, but it finished Thursday's regular trading session down 8 percent at $695. Some analysts say the preemptive release of its numbers spurred confusion and exacerbated its stock price decline. [Rob Cyran, Columnist, Thomson Reuters Breakingviews]: "Google's mobile operations had a horrible result. They had a loss of about $500 million. That's bad on two reasons. First, Google will have to spend some time fixing it. And second is management could be distracted." Google executives said in a conference call on Thursday that the company's businesses were still doing well. They also anticipated growth as consumers of the mobile platform increase. | 11-Month-Old Panda Cub Takes First Steps Posted: 19 Oct 2012 05:34 PM PDT | An 11-week-old panda cub is is learning to walk this week at his vet exam at the San Diego Zoo. The panda cub gets put on the floor by his caretakers and tries to crawl forward on all fours. Just when he looks like he will start walking, his back legs give out and he rolls onto his side. [PK Robbins, Senior Vet at San Diego Zoo]: "I would say he's making progress. He's kind of at that awkward toddler stage where some limbs are working better than others. Certainly the front legs want to get up and go but the back legs sort of got a little bit left behind. But he's definitely learning, he's getting those skill sets that he needs and he's a pretty active little dude." The panda cub squeaks and rolls around the floor in his attempts to be mobile. He is expected to be able to walk on all four legs in just a few weeks. It will still be at least a few more months before he is able enough to venture into the panda exhibit. Only 1600 giant pandas are believed to exist in the wild, and the species is primarily threatened by habitat loss. San Diego Zoo Global, in conjunction with Chinese panda experts, continue to work on science-based panda conservation programs. | Discovering China - The Three Kingdoms Posted: 19 Oct 2012 02:09 PM PDT | At the end of the Han Dynasty, the Imperial Army managed to crush the Yellow Turban Rebellion. But the generals, given the task of defeating them, grew strong and saw an opportunity to seize the throne for themselves. The three key players in this quest for control over China were Cao Cao—who served as Captain of Cavalry in suppressing the Yellow Turbans, Liu Bei a distant relative of the Han imperial family, and Sun Quan who had been known by the title, 'the general who attacks barbarians.' In 205 AD, Cao Cao became the dictator of northern China. Liu Beis stronghold was in the area around what is modern day Sichuan province, while Sun Quan was based in the southeast. Cao Cao had the ambition to conquer all of China. He started to march his army south. Outnumbered by Cao Caos large army, Sun Quan and Liu Bei formed an alliance and their forces of 50000 soldiers met Cao Caos 200000 at a place called the Red Cliff on the Yangtze River in the winter of 208 AD. This battle established the power structure of the divided China for the next 50 years. The Battle of the Red Cliff started on the river. Cao Cao, his men tired and ill from the march south, were forced to retreat to the northern bank of the river. Liu Beis military strategist, Zhuge Liang and Sun Quans general, Zhou Yu noted that Cao Caos boats are moored tightly together—possibly to stop his men getting seasick. They came up with a plan to burn the fleet. However their plan would not work unless the wind is on their ... | Views: 16 5 ratings | | Time: 03:23 | More in Shows |

| State Media Express Rare Criticism of Labor Camp Sentence Posted: 19 Oct 2012 02:04 PM PDT | China's Communist regime has a tight grip on media in the country. That's why it's unusual to see reports like these -- newspapers like the Global Times and Beijing News criticizing the Party's decision to sentence Ren Jianyu to a labor camp. In August last year, Ren was sentenced to reeducation through labor for negative online comments he made about now disgraced politician, Bo Xilai. Ren's father submitted a court appeal, which was heard last Wednesday. Two days later, the People's Daily said being sentenced for critical statements made online was, "outdated and goes against today's freedom of speech and rule of law." According to Tang Baiqiao, head of the New York based Democracy Academy of China, the Communist Party strategically allowed the publication of such editorials. [Tang Baiqiao, Head Teacher, Democracy Academy of China]: "This is a relatively easy issue to understand. After all, the CCP said they want to engage in some political reform. They want to take this case as an opportunity to show they sincerely want political reform, because the pressure is coming from civilians." There have been soaring demands from the public to reform the labor camp system. In August a children's book author Zheng Yuanjie created an online poll about labor camps. Nearly 20 thousand people participated and 98 percent voted to stop the system. The day before Ren's court appeal, the Chinese State Council released a white paper on judicial reform. | WTO Rejects China's Appeal on Illegal Tariffs of US Steel Posted: 19 Oct 2012 01:55 PM PDT | On Thursday, the World Trade Organization rejected China's appeal of a decision saying the regime imposed illegal tariffs on US exports of a specialty steel. The steel in question is "grain-oriented electrical steel," made in Pennsylvania and Ohio, two battleground states in the upcoming US presidential election. President Barack Obama's trade representative, Ron Kirk, said in a statement, "Today we are again plainly stating that we will continue to take every step necessary to ensure that China plays by the rules and does not unfairly restrict exports of US products." The WTO decision may be a timely victory for the President, who has been fending off accusations from his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, that he is too soft on the Chinese regime. However, the specialty steel case is a minor one compared with other current trade disputes with China. Both President Obama and Mitt Romney have promised to put more pressure on the Chinese regime. It says 75% of Chinese workers surveyed indicated their feelings of stress have grown in the past year--topping the global list. What's the source of the stress? According to Regus, it's job, personal finance, and bosses. A Shanghai customer service worker says his stress comes from long work hours. [Cang Yue, Shanghai Worker] "There is quite a lot of pressure in Shanghai, we have to leave early in the morning and get home late at night. There's not many places for leisure, and my pay isn't' good. I work all day and there's no time for personal development or learning about new things." One Beijing resident told NTD that growing costs of living is what's weighing them down. [Li Wei, Beijing Resident] "In just four or five years, the cost of buying a home tripled or quadrupled. We earn just about 10000 yuan per month, even for someone with good pay, if we save up everything, it'll take us three months to save up money to purchase just 35 square feet of space." Regus says Shanghai and Beijing have the most stressed workers, with 80% and 67% respectively saying they feel more stress over the past year. As a comparison, the global average is 48%.
