Passport problems - China Take - November 28 - BONTV

Posted: 28 Nov 2012 10:06 PM PST

Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode Some Chinese citizens are worried about the possible problems holders of newly designed Chinese passports may face. This May, China started issuing new e-passports with an electronic data chip. However most pages also have a map of China as the background -- and this drawing shows a number of disputed areas -- including almost all of the South China Seas -- as Chinese territory. There have been already been complaints from several of China's neighbors including the Philippines, Vietnam and India. In response Vietnam has refused to stamp visas on the pages, insisting they go on a separate insert. Meanwhile the Indian embassy in Beijing has stamped the new passports with an alternative map which shows the disputed territory as claimed by both countries. This poster seems to feel that simply drawing what you wish for may have been a little TOO clever in this case, and that it is the ordinary traveler who will end up paying the price.

Go to www.bon.tv to watch the full episode Follow us on Weibo weibo.com China's wage gains have moderated on weaker corporate profits, capping consumer demand as the government seeks to sustain a rebound after seven-quarters of slowing economic growth. Government data show that average urban salaries rose 12% in the first nine months from a year earlier without adjusting for inflation, slowing from a 14.4% gain for all of last year and 13.3% in 2010. Restaurant operator Yum Brands! reports smaller pay increases, and labor ministry data showed the same for minimum wages. Minimum wages rose an average 19.4 per cent in 18 provinces this year through September, government data showed. China has targeted an annual average increase of 13 percent for 2011-15. Deeper declines in wage growth could undermine efforts by China's new leadership under Xi Jinping to boost consumer spending and shift the world's second-biggest economy away from dependence on investment and exports. Li Keqiang, the second-highest ranked official in the new Communist Party leadership, said last week that household spending is key to boosting domestic demand. Consumption, which includes government and household spending, fell to 49.1 percent of gross domestic product in 2011 from 59.6 percent in 2002, when Hu Jintao began his decade as Communist Party chief. Data from the statistics bureau showed industrial profits declined 1.8 percent in the first three quarters after a 27 percent rise for the same period ...
