Tiny French Village Braces for 'End of the World' Visitors

Posted: 24 Nov 2012 12:34 PM PST

A tiny French village in the foothills of the Pyrenees is starting to ramp up security...in preparation for the end of the world. Full story: The small village of Bugarach in south west France close to the Pyrenees mountain range has a population of just 200. But now the villagers are bracing themselves for the arrival of hundreds, if not thousands, of esoateric groups and doomsday followers who believe the mountain over the village has magic power. According to some interpretations of the Mayan calendar, the end of the world is scheduled for December 21st this year. But new-agers and self-styled gurus who have spread speculation about the imminent end of the world on the internet believe the village of Bugarach will survive. They are convinced UFOs will rescue them and may even be inside the mountain top ready to take them to safety. Speculation has spread widely on the internet and while the French authorities think the scenario is ridiculous, they are taking the situation very seriously. Over a hundred gendarmes will seal off the village from the 19th of December through the 23rd to keep out any doomsday groups planning to head to the mountain top. The mayor of Bugarach said he needs the police to guarantee the village's safety as he fears the arrival of cults as the dreaded day arrives. He says that anyone thinking of making the trek to the village on December 21 should not even think about it as there will be no space ships, just lots of police officers to keep them ...

No Education for Children as Syrian Schools Shut Down

Posted: 24 Nov 2012 11:25 AM PST

Syrians struggle to educate their children in war-ravaged areas such as the country's largest city Aleppo, where children have no school left to go to. Full Story: Aleppo has become one of Syria's main battlegrounds, where fierce fighting between rebels and government troops has crippled the city. Many local children now spend their days in the streets, as the education system has shut down. This newly built kindergarten held lessons for just one week before it was forced to close. Once full with students, classrooms are littered with debris. Despite the devastation, not all have given up hope. Many of the city's mosques have now taken the place of schools. Pupils here are learning rudimentary education such as basic maths and language skills. The lessons offer a glimmer of hope, but the education shutdown is just one of the struggles facing Syria's children. Activists say more than 40000 people have now died in the conflict, which has no end in sight. For more news and videos visit ☛ ntd.tv Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me

World's Smallest Deer Finds Hope After Rescue

Posted: 24 Nov 2012 08:02 AM PST

An orphaned Pudu deer, the tiniest deer species in the world and in grave danger of extinction, is rescued from a forest in Chile. San Sebastian University in Chile has a very special little guest. Her name is Bambu, a one-month-old Pudu deer, the smallest deer species in the entire world. The tiny fawn was found orphaned in a forest on the outskirts of the city when she was only about one week old. Specialists rushed her to the university's veterinary clinic for medical attention and caretaking. [Leonidas Valdivieso, Director of Concepcion's Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG)]: "We took her and brought her here, to the San Sebastian University. At the time she was only one week old, and now she is one month old. When she arrived she weighed 2.6 pounds (1.2 kg) and now she weighs 4.1 pounds (1.86 kg). They feed her milk and a special diet. Now we can see that she is very agile and full of life." Due to their dwindling numbers and timid nature, not much is currently known about wild Pudu deer. [Dr. Miguel Mancilla, Veterinarian, San Sebastian Veterinary Clinic]: "We have been getting to know the species better, but in many ways it is still an enigma. The diseases are not very well known—there are very few reports on what the species is susceptible to. More is known about animals in captivity that were born in zoos. Most of the knowledge that exists about animals are from those born in captivity, very little is known about wild animals." Pudus live in forests in Chile ...

Black Friday Buying Frenzy Hits NYC

Posted: 24 Nov 2012 05:00 AM PST

Black Friday in the US starts at midnight and shoppers line up to get the best deals. Many brave the crowds but many go online to get the same deals. Full story: It's Black Friday in the United States, and possibly the biggest shopping day of the year. Black Friday always falls on the Friday after Thanksgiving, a traditional American holiday that marks the start of the holiday season. A month before Christmas may seem a bit soon to be doing holiday shopping, but for businesses that want to turn a profit, it can't come soon enough. [Chris Donally, Global Managing Director for Retail, Accenture]: "The surveys that we've done of customers say that they're going to spend, on average, a little more than they have in the past and they've been very thoughtful about their planning for the year, so they've set aside a good budget that they can use in the holiday season." The name "Black Friday" has several origins, and one of them has to do with the sizable returns businesses make during the holiday season. The Black refers to the color of ink that accountants would use when a business made a profit. Black Friday was traditionally the day when the ink went from red to black. The name was also used by policemen in Philadelphia in the 1970's. They used it to describe the large volume of traffic coming into the city. Today, similar crowds come into the city and wait in the cold to catch the best deals. [Terry Lundgren, Macy's CEO]: "Things are going well. I got here at midnight ...

Some residents in New York lost everything when superstorm Sandy battered the US east coast, but many are finding reasons to be thankful on Thanksgiving Day. Full story: While millions of Americans come together for Thanksgiving, here on New York's Staten Island some residents are finding it hard to celebrate. Many homes still bear the scars of superstorm Sandy, and with lives devastated, it's hard to be thankful. Tina Salluzzo has been living without electricity on the second floor of her home which escaped the onslaught. [Tina Salluzzo, Staten Island Resident]: "I don't know. Don't feel like Thanksgiving to me. I got to thank God that we still all good, still all alive, but I don't know how we're going to do this, you know. I really don't know." Fortunately for storm victims, communities have rallied to keep the Thanksgiving tradition alive. Food has been donated and turkeys cooked, so everyone can have a taste of a Thanksgiving feast. [Simon Bangiyev, Staten Island Resident]: "Not being home, you know. Being surrounded with your family, you know, but all we have to do is just move on. Keep on going." Mongolia Joined OSCE, Was China's Backyard On Fire?

Posted: 24 Nov 2012 06:52 AM PST

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com Was China's backyard on fire? As its neighboring country, Mongolia formally joined OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) on Nov. 22. OSCE includes countries from Europe, America and Canada. It is a security-oriented organization covering all European countries and North America. The mission is to provide a consultation platform for members on European affairs, particularly security affairs. On Nov. 23, Voice of America reported that a commenter claimed the US led OSCE, which is the same as NATO, to "win over Mongolia in order to restrain China." "Mongolia is located between China and Russia, its location is very important," a comment said. Thus, the US launched peacekeeping forces and a training center in Mongolia. Since year 2003, the US had held a series of military drills with the Mongolian army. The report said that Mongolia was controlled by the former Soviet Union for several years. After the Soviet Union collapsed, Mongolia implemented a multi-party democratic system, improving its relations with the US. Mongolia and China's relations also developed rapidly. China has replaced Russia as Mongolia's largest trading partner over the past 10 years. However, analysts said that Mongolia was sandwiched between China and Russia, feeling pressured. Thus it needs to choose more strategic space, and put forward the concept of "third neighbors." In recent years, Mongolia has actually ...

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com An article on the Diplomacy Scholars website predicted that in the next 10 years, China is likely to face a significant economic and political crisis, or even become involved in a military conflict. The article stated that the Soviet Union's sudden disintegration caught the US government and the CIA off guard. In order to avoid accidents, they could educate themselves regarding the political struggle in China, economic slowdown, increasing territorial disputes with neighboring countries, environmental disasters, and the lack of new political reform ideas. The article said that what kind of effects from China's unexpected economic collapse or serious political crisis, let alone a military conflict should become part of the national strategic planning. Diplomacy Scholars published Preparing for China's Fall on November 21. Its author, Michael Auslin, is a scholar of the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, DC. The article pointed out that more and more China observers have issued an alert on the many aspects of China's crisis. The authors provided a list of issues that global governments and policy analysts should pay attention to. The first is divisions and scandals at the high level CCP. The author believes that the Bo Xilai case revealed the power struggle within Zhongnanhai and shocking corruption at the high level. The second is the economic slowdown. Muslim Brotherhood Offices Attacked in Egypt

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 06:03 PM PST

The offices of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood come under attack in a swell of anger against President Mohamed Mursi's decision to assume sweeping powers. Full story: Opponents of Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi attacked the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood party in cities across the country on Friday. President Mursi, an Islamist with roots in the Muslim Brotherhood, assumed sweeping powers on Thursday, causing fury and prompting violent clashes in central Cairo and other cities. In Alexandria, north of Cairo, protesters ransacked an office of the Brotherhood's political party, burning books and chairs in the street. Supporters of Mursi and opponents clashed elsewhere in the city, leaving 12 injured. A Brotherhood party building was attacked by stone-throwing protesters in Port Said, and demonstrators in Suez threw petrol bombs that burned banners outside the party building. In Cairo, sporadic clashes between anti-Brotherhood protesters and Egyptian security forces continued for a fifth day as large numbers of demonstrators gathered in Tahrir square. Protester Ali Seif says that just as demonstrators ousted former President Hosni Mubarak in a popular uprising in February 2011, they would likewise oust Mursi. 4 Chinese Hostages Released in Colombia After 17 Months

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 03:32 PM PST

Four Chinese hostages were released this Wednesday from being held by rebels in southern Colombia. They arrived this Thursday in Bogotá, the capital of Colombia. The hostages are reported to be in good health except for one who was taken off on a stretcher. Chinese media has not provided his exact condition, only that he has "mobility problems." A Marxist rebel group is believed to have held the four men since June of last year. The group is called the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia and has been fighting against the Colombian government for five decades. The motives for the capture are unclear. No ransom was demanded from the Chinese embassy, and there were no clear political gains to the kidnapping. The four men were working for Sinochem, a subsidiary of British-owned oil company Emerald Energy. Three were engineers and one was a translator. The Chinese embassy said the four men were released to the International Committee of the Red Cross by men in civilian clothes on Wednesday night. After receiving medical examinations, the men will be flown back to China on Friday to be reunited with their family. Sotheby's in Hong Kong Showcases "Old Master Paintings"

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 03:26 PM PST

Demand for fine art in Asia has gone up in recent decades, and Sotheby's auction house in Hong Kong has responded. [Gregory Rubenstein, Sotheby's Head of "Old Master Paintings"]: "In the last few years we've seen an ever increasing interest in old masterworks in Asia in general. At this moment, there's an exhibition for the first time of Italian Renaissance art at the National Museum of China in Beijing. And we believe this interest is growing quite rapidly." Sotheby's Hong Kong auction house is now showcasing "Old Master Paintings" by some of the greatest Renaissance artists. Among the works on offer is a sketch called the "Young Apostle" by Renaissance painter Rafael. The drawing is a study of one of the apostles painted in his famous work, the "Transfiguration." It was painted in the Vatican by Rafael in the early 1500's, right before he died. [Gregory Rubenstein, Sotheby's Head of "Old Master Paintings"]: "What's so special about this drawing is that it is one of a tiny handful of major drawings by Raphael that remain in private hands. And also it's one of the key drawings that he made in creating his very last masterpiece, the 'Transfiguration', the masterpiece that he was still working on when he died suddenly at the age of 37 in 1520." This is one of the most significant pieces by Rafael to come on the market in roughly 50 years. The drawing is expected to fetch between $16 and $24 million dollars at its upcoming sale in London on December 5th. For more news and ...

Demolition Crews Build Highway Around Home

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 03:15 PM PST

The Chinese regime technically owns most of the land in China. That makes for trouble when government developers want to tear down homes, and the homeowners refuse to sell. This is just one example. An elderly couple refused to sign a demolition order on their house. So developers just built the road around it. Luo Baogen and his wife refused to leave, even after all their neighbors had gone. According to their former neighbors, the two said they had not received enough compensation to rebuild their five story house elsewhere. It's a typical example of what has become known as a nail house. In Chinese it's called "Dingzhi Hu." It describes how these homes are left to stick out like nails from construction sites, refusing to be hammered down. It's a surprisingly common scenario. This man in Wuhan made a homemade rocket launcher to defend his property. Families are forced to move out of their home homes for little or no compensation. Resistance is often met with extreme brutality. And since land developers often team up with the local government to take the land, residents are sometimes forced to take matters in their own hands. In 2010, three people in Jiangxi Province set themselves on fire to stop the demolition of their homes. One later died of the injuries. The house was still torn down. China's Toxic Milk Whistleblower Murdered

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 03:10 PM PST

The man who first alerted authorities to what would become the melamine-tainted milk scandal has been murdered. Jiang Weisuo, 44, was attacked by unidentified men in Xi'an city two weeks ago. On Friday, he passed away from his wounds. Authorities have said they have one suspect in custody, but have released no other information. Calls from NTD were diverted. [Someone from Yanta Branch of Xi'an Public Security Bureau]: "We can't accept interviews, it's impossible to disclose any specific information." Jiang was an operator of a dairy company in Shaanxi province. In 2006 he reported that local dairy companies were putting dangerous chemicals in their milk products. He was ignored until 2008, when it came clear that at least six babies had died and 290000 others suffered kidney damage from melamine-tainted milk powder. Unconfirmed reports from Chinese media claim that paid killers murdered Jiang. When the melamine milk scandal first broke there were rumors that he had a 500000 yuan, or $80275 USD, price on his head. The toxic milk scandal sent shockwaves throughout China. Many dairy companies were shut down. Even the state-owned Sanlu dairy company was found to be one of the 22 firms adding melamine. China Offers Financial Rewards for Organs Amidst Harvesting Claims

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 03:06 PM PST

Chinese people may soon be getting financial incentives to give up their organs, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported on Friday (November 23). Officially, China carries out about 10000 organ transplants each year. But with a cultural aversion to organ donation, the Chinese regime has been unable to explain where the bulk of the organs come from. Rather than offering detailed explanations, health authorities have launched new initiatives to encourage people to be organ donors. According to Xinhua, Vice Health Minister Huang Jeifu said this week that donors could be compensated with lower medical fees, tax reductions and funeral expenses. But critics say the move is a way to cover up the fact that the regime has been killing prisoners of conscience for their organs. [Li Shanjian, China Analyst] "What it's doing now is to cover up. It wants to use some methods that the public can be more accepting of to cover up the unthinkable acts that it's been doing all this time." In 2006, two Canadian investigators published their findings for claims that the Chinese regime was harvesting organs from detained Falun Gong adherents. Chinese authorities have denied the accusations, but did not address specific points raised in the report. But, after insisting first that only voluntarily donated organs were used, the regime began to admit to using executed prisoners as a main source of organs. More recently, as international pressure mounted for the regime to explain the forced organ ...

New Map in Chinese Passport Fuels Sea Dispute

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 03:01 PM PST

China's new passport, released on Thursday (November 22), has become a new point of contention, after the Chinese regime included parts of disputed sea territories as its own on a map inside the passport. This means countries disputing the Chinese claims will have to stamp the passports of countless visitors, in effect admitting to the Chinese point of view. Now the Philippines, Vietnam and Taiwan have all issued protests, saying the map violates their sovereignty. [Raul Hernandez, Spokesman, Philippines Foreign Affairs Department] "We have filed a protest and we have told them that this is a violation of the declaration on the conduct of parties in the South China Sea, which asks all parties to refrain from escalating the dispute, and also that this violates our territorial sovereignty and our maritime domain in the area." China's Foreign Ministry insists the new map is not targeted at any specific country. Still, a former Vietnamese diplomat has slammed the move. [Duong Danh, Former Vietnamese Diplomat] "This is a very wicked action and very tricky at the same time because the passport is printed with the nine-dash line claim, which is strongly objected to by Vietnam." In July, the Chinese regime significantly upped tensions with Vietnam by setting up military garrisons on islands in dispute. The new maps in the passports also claimed parts of disputed territories with India. In response, the Indian embassy in Beijing is stamping visas with its own map. Despite calls ...

Sichuan Quake to Haunt New Propaganda Chief Liu Qibao

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 02:56 PM PST

A businessman-turned advocate says he does not trust China's new Propaganda chief. Liu Qibao was appointed the new Minister of Propaganda this week, with his credentials as the Party chief of Sichuan province providing the necessary boost to get the promotion. Wang Xiaodong says, after the 2008 Sichuan earthquake Liu helped to cover up shoddy school construction that resulted in building collapses which took the lives of thousands of children. [Wang Xiaodong, Sichuan Earthquake Activist] "I openly challenged Liu Qibao, it was a truth contending with lies." State-run media has praised Liu Qibao for leading recovery efforts in Sichuan. But, Wang believes that it was Liu's heavy-handed approach against dissents that helped his career and this will continue with Liu's new role. [Wang Xiaodong, Sichuan Earthquake Activist] "From what he has always done, and even with his bad track records in Guangxi and Sichuan, he's been able to climb the ranks. So his instinct to lie will not change, he will not change just because he is the Propaganda Minister." After the Sichuan quake, Liu Qibao and local authorities denied poor construction was the cause of the numerous school building collpases, but when Wang investigated, he was pursued by security officials. Sichuan authorities also sent several grassroots activists to prison after they tried to do their own investigations. Wang says Liu Qibao may even surpass his predecessor, Liu Yunshan, in suppressing dissent. [Wang Xiaodong ...

Gaza Shooting Threatens Fragile Truce

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 02:49 PM PST

Early on Friday, Israeli troops shot and killed one Palestinian man and wounded 19 others. This according to a report by Palestinian Ma'an News Agency, citing medical officials in Gaza. According to medics, Anwar Qdeih, 21, was hit in the head by Israeli gunfire after he approached a border fence in a no-go buffer zone between Gaza and Israel. A relative of Qdeih was at the scene, and told Reuters the Palestinian man had been trying to place a Hamas flag on the fence. The relative said that an Israeli soldier had fired into the air three times before Qdeih was hit and killed. Al Jazeera reporter Nicole Johnston said she had received reports that Palestinian farmers entered the 300-metre wide buffer zone to check their crops, and with them a group of teenagers entered. She said the farmers may have thought the access terms have changed following the truce and easing of restrictions. According to an Al Jazeera report, an eyewitness said that after the shooting, Hamas security officials escorted the Palestinians away from the site, helping to enforce the fragile two-day old truce. A Palestinian security source later confirmed to Reuters that their instruction is not to allow people to approach the border fence. In a sign that Israel means to hold up its side of the ceasefire bargain, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government has officially cancelled a state of national emergency launched at the start of the fighting. Following the shooting, a group of about 300 ...

Egypt Celebrates 90th Anniversary of Tutankhamun Discovery

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 02:40 PM PST

Descendants of the Egyptologist who discovered the tomb of the young pharoah Tutankhamun join celebrations marking the 90th anniversary of its discovery. Full story: It was one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century—perhaps of all time. 90 years ago this week, British Egyptologists Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon discovered the tomb of the boy king, Tutankhamun, in Egypt's Valley of the Kings—which had lain undisturbed for more than 3000 years. Inside the remarkably well-preserved tomb was an abundance of gold and fineries left with the 19-year-old after his death and mummification. On Thursday, Carnarvon's great grandson—the current Lord Carnarvon—was among those attending a celebration event at Carter's old house in Luxor, now a museum. [Lord Carnarvon, 8th Earl of Carnarvon]: "When my great-grandfather and Howard Carter actually broke through the outer sealed door with Tutankhamun's cartouche and crest on it and when they first saw into the ante-chamber of the tomb... this amazing archaeological discovery that has never been surpassed.'' Egyptian authorities also marked the anniversary by reopening the tomb of Merinbetah—previously closed for six years of restoration. Tourism chief Hisham Zaazou said the government was determined to support more events to boost tourism, which has declined sharply since the revolution. [Hisham Zaazou, Egypt's Minister of Tourism]: ''We will continue to have an agenda, a touristic agenda, throughout the coming ...
