Orthodox Christians in Lydda Celebrate St.George

Posted: 24 Nov 2012 01:52 PM PST

Thousands of orthodox Christians arrived in Lydda City in Israel during the weekend, to hold celebrations in memory of Saint George. Legend says Saint George fought and won a ferocious battle with a dragon. Traditionally, the dragon symbolized paganism and the erroneous faith of man, and by eliminating the beast, Saint George is said to have validated righteous faith. Saint George was born in Lydda in the second half of the third century AD and grew up in the British Isles. After his father died, he returned with his mother to his birthplace, where he was later buried. The Roman emperor, Diocletian, put Saint George to death as a traitor when he refused to offer sacrifice to the Roman gods and to oppress the Christians. Saint George's celebration has become a local tradition—eating mutton is one custom, another is to go down into the crypt where Saint George is said to be buried. Opposite the church entrance, there is an engraving of Saint George slaying the dragon with his spear. The ceremony includes processions and youth orchestras, with participants gathering from across the country. Reporter:Janet Zrian Photographer:Michel Ash NTD News, Israel. Full Story: Millions of majestic monarch butterflies have started to arrive in the central Mexican state of Michoacan—an annual spectacle that draws curious tourists, scientists and locals alike. Friday was the first day that the public were allowed to enter the reserve to observe the teeming swarms of orange and black butterflies. The monarch butterflies flee the cold winters of Canada and the northern United States and travel thousands of miles to hibernate and reproduce in the temperate, hilly forests of Michoacan. Hundreds of trees crowded with butterflies can be seen across the 32000 acre reserve in Sierra Chincua. As the sun comes out, thousands of butterflies can be seen fluttering between the trees and resting and feeding on branches and leaves. But locals say there are fewer butterflies this year than in years past. Diego Gonzalez, a local man and a caretaker at the reserve, said that the use of harmful chemicals for fumigation purposes in the United States is diminishing the butterfly population. [Diego Gonzalez, Butterfly Reserve Caretaker]: "American farmers are using many chemicals for fumigation purposes on their land. That is one of the main problems faced by Asclepias plants, which is what the butterflies eat. The plants do not develop 100 percent, often due to ...
