Chinese Granny Offers Warmth to Orphans with Yarn

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 04:50 AM PST

It's repetitive and can be a challenge for those who are advanced in age. But for this Chinese granny, none of that has stopped her from giving to those who are most in need. For 16 years, Granny Qu, as she is known, has taken from her pension and devoted her time to knit over 400 sweaters for kids Shanghai's orphans. Now 83, Granny Qu said she found inspiration from television many years ago. [Granny Qu, Knitting Lady] "I watched a TV program about a disabled woman, Mrs. Fang. Though in a wheelchair, she has donated 50 schoolbags to the charitable Hope Project. It really touched me. I thought as she can do her bit to pay back to the society, so can I." Granny Qu started by creating a "special fund of love". She put aside one yuan from her monthly pension of 600 yuan. When she had enough money for yarn, she started to knit. [Granny Qu, Knitting Lady] "I am in good health and able-bodied, and I can knit. So I started to knit sweaters for the kids in orphanages." Over the years her pension increased and so did her contributions to her "special fund of love". She also keeps in mind the little ones who will be wearing her sweaters. Granny Qu buys pattern books for design ideas. Now her good deeds are getting a boost. Her relatives, friends and neighbors were touched by her efforts and have also donated sweaters or yarn for Granny Qu to do what she does best. [Neighbor] "I'm really moved. If Granny Qu can donate, so can I. I have a lot of yarn at home so I gave them all to ...

Taiwan Says No Entry for Dalai Lama

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 04:45 AM PST

Taiwan's Foreign Ministry has said no entry for the Dalai Lama. The Tibetan spiritual leader was supposed to speak at a conference in December. He had been invited by the Taiwan chapter of the Federation of Business and Professional Women. The group claims that the Foreign Ministry caved to Chinese pressure. Taiwan has so far denied this, claiming instead that the timing was not right. This is the same response to a cancelled visit by the Dalai Lama in 2008. He did manage to visit the island in 2009 after a deadly typhoon. However, that trip triggered anger from Mainland China, and cross-strait tourist trips to Taiwan were cancelled. Taiwan's current leadership has been called pro-China by its critics. And China's Communist leadership still considers Taiwan to be part of its territory following a split in 1949. Posted: 23 Nov 2012 04:45 AM PST

A Japanese jeweller gives Christmas some extra sparkle with a 4.2 million US dollar Christmas decoration made of solid gold Disney characters. For those looking to glitz up Christmas this year, one jewellery store in Tokyo has just the thing—a pure gold revolving decoration, complete with Disney characters. That's if you can afford the 4.2 million US dollar (350 million yen) price tag. The decoration was made by jewellery store, Ginza Tanaka, specializing in gold accessories. The store worked in collaboration with Walt Disney Japan to commemorate the 110th anniversary of Walt Disney. Called "Disney Gold Christmas Tree", the decoration is made of 40 kilograms of pure gold, measuring about 2.4 meters high and 1.2 meters across. It is the single most expensive Walt Disney Japan-licensed merchandise ever to go on sale. Despite the steep price, chief manager of Tanaka Kikinzoku Jewellery's marketing department, says it's still a good deal. [Tomoko Ishibashi, Chief Manager, Marketing Department, Tanaka Kikinzoku]: "Right now gold is over 4400 yen per gram, and so we used pure gold and had an expert craftsman craft each famous Disney character by hand. So while the price is indeed 350-million yen, we believe that it's still quite a deal." The carousel consists of 50 pure gold cut-outs of Disney's most popular characters, including Mickey Mouse, Tinkerbell and Cinderella, on its three revolving platforms. It's also draped with ribbons of gold leaves and a golden chain, and for ...

Analysts: "Nine Commentaries" Sheds Light on China's Future

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 04:39 AM PST

Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party. This month marks eight years since it was first published by The Epoch Times newspaper. Since then, it's been credited with giving Chinese citizens a groundbreaking new look at their own modern history and China's future prospects. [Jing Chu, Chinese Author] "[China's] history and truths were scattered. Nothing did what the Nine Commentaries did to expose the roots of the Communist Party. It's a remarkable piece of work. People are shocked after reading it, and it's improved our understanding of a lot of things." The Nine Commentaries critically examines the impact the Chinese Communist Party has had on the Chinese people and the nation. In particular, it looks at the result of getting rid of traditional values and replacing them with communist ideology—and what impact that's today in a China that has shed much of communism as well. [Jing Chu, Chinese Author] "'Mao Zedong Thought' brought blood and tears and disaster to China. It made China a place of pretence and phoniness...people don't speak the truth; they cheat others, and this has led to the complete deterioration of spirituality and morality." China analyst Li Shanjian says the Nine Commentaries helped him see why the Communist Party frequently talks about reform but can't actually change. [Li Shanjian, China Analyst] "For its own survival, the Communist Party has been changing its own constitution. When it does something that everyone recognizes as wrong, it'll discard one ...

Napoleon's "Blow up Kremlin" Letter at Auction

Posted: 22 Nov 2012 06:16 PM PST

A letter written by French emperor Napoleon during his Russian military campaign, giving orders to destroy the Russian palace is up for auction in Paris. Full Story: In October 1812, French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte wrote a one-page letter to a military commander in Moscow, instructing him to "blow up the Kremlin". The old palace did not survive the order but the letter itself did. The missive is now on display in a Paris auction house a stone's throw from the Emperor's final resting place, ahead of a sale to take place next month. To the naked eye the letter appears to be a string of numbers signed simply, 'Nap'. Napoleon expert working at the Osenat auction house, Jean-Christophe Chataignier, explains its significance. [Jean-Christophe Chataignier, Osenat Auction House]: "It's a very rare letter which is written in code, a bit like the secret service of the time. Napoleon was in Moscow at a very difficult time for him psychologically. He arrives in a town practically burning, deserted by the Muscovites; the Tsar has left. And faced with this situation he leaves Moscow but he gives the order to blow up the Kremlin." The order was carried out; the palace was burnt, and with it went a large number of precious works of art which were never recovered. Chataignier says, although Russian collectors still celebrate Napoleon's legendary military prowess, it's hard for them to forgive what they see as an act of vandalism. Given its explosive content and the fact that so few such ...

Head of Organ Transplants Accidentally Exposes Live Organ Harvest

Posted: 22 Nov 2012 07:48 PM PST

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com China's Vice Minister of Health, Huang Jiefu, was called the head of China's organ transplantation. On November 21st, he did his first so-called "the death heart donor's organ surgery." He said that he expects within one or two years, organ transplants in China will no longer rely on executed criminals. At the beginning of next year, China will launch a national organ donation distribution and sharing system. Medical experts say that in recent years, the quantity of China's organ transplant surgeries increased dramatically, and there are far less available organs from executed criminals. Huang Jiefu's words verified that there is, in fact, an organ donor pool in China, in which many living organs are available, awaiting patients. In response to doubts from various walks of life regarding the origin of China's organs used for transplant surgery, Huang Jiefu said that in two and half years, from March 2010 to Sept. 30 2012, China Ministry of Health launched 38 human organ donation pilot points together with the Red Cross Society. In total, they received 465 bodies and 1279 organs, he claimed. Within 2 years, China will no longer rely on executed criminals, but will use donated organs for transplant surgery. However, the China's Organ Transplant Net reported in August 2009 that the Shanghai National Human Organ Donation Working Conference announced that in total, China has performed 86800 kidney ...
