City of Beijing encourages satellite navigation sector

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 06:14 AM PST

The municipality of Beijing is encouraging investment in the navigation and location-based services industry, suggesting there is a market worth at least 50 billion yuan ($8 billion) by 2015 after China put its own satellite navigation network into commercial use.

The reaction comes after the latest satellite in China's Beidou-2 navigation system was launched in Xichang in October. The system is expected to start providing positioning and navigation services for China and neighboring areas by the end of this year and provide global coverage by 2020.

The Beijing municipal government said there is capacity for at least 100 location-based services in the city, Shanghai Securities News reported on Wednesday, citing Beijing Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology, the industry regulator.

Beijing-based navigation companies expected to use the Beidou System, include NavInfo Co Ltd, AutoNavi Holdings Ltd, Beijing UniStrong Science and Technology Co Ltd.

AutoNavi, which is providing map services to Apple Inc in the Chinese mainland, said Beidou will help the company to better service its Chinese users.

Jiang Derong, senior vice-president of AutoNavi, said: "Beidou is set to beef up our services and I am not worried by the head-on confrontation of Beidou and GPS from the United States. Beidou has its own strengths in China."

Plasticizers found in liquor made by Jiugui

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 06:14 AM PST

Plasticizers found in liquor made by Hunan-based Jiugui Liquor Co far exceed national standards, China's top quality watchdog said on Wednesday.

The chemicals can cause male fertility problems and induce early female puberty. Experiments on animals have also demonstrated a carcinogenic effect.

The highest amount of DBP — a type of the substance found in the product samples from the Chinese liquor maker — was 1.04 mg/kg, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

The result was reported by the Hunan provincial bureau of quality and technical supervision on Wednesday, the administration said in a statement on its website.

The law stipulates that every kilogram of food should contain less than 0.3 mg of DBP.

On Wednesday, Jiugui's shares were suspended from the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, two days after business news website 21cbh.com reported that the company's products were found to contain excessive amounts of the chemical.

The incident is also hitting the country's entire liquor industry after the China Alcoholic Drinks Association said on its website on Tuesday that almost all of the country's white-spirit products contain the chemical, although the association insisted that the content is far below the usual limit set on such products overseas.

Thai Film Week a hit in Shanghai

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 06:14 AM PST

Chinese audiences enjoyed a feast of Thai movies during the first Thai Film Week, staged in Shanghai from Nov 15 to 18, featuring 12 films.

Thai films have been shown at the Shanghai International Film Festival for the past two years, also attracting keen audience interest.

"The success gave us the impetus to promote the Thai entertainment industry to China," said Buskorn Prugsapongse, consul-general of Thailand in Shanghai, in an exclusive interview with China Daily.

Thai movie star Mos Patiparn visited Shanghai and met Chinese audiences for the film week. The movie Like or Love, in which he stars, opened the festival at the Cathay Theater.

Buskorn said all the 12 movies were carefully selected for a Chinese audience. "Our experience shows Chinese audiences prefer light-hearted comedies and romance," she said. "They want movies to be entertaining, with beautiful scenes and good-looking actors."

The Thai movie industry has gained global recognition in recent years, winning many international awards.

Buskorn said movies build a bridge to connect people of different cultures.

"They enhance mutual understanding, and the influence lasts longer," she said.

Thailand has been a favorite location for foreign film producers since the 1950s, and last year 28 foreign movies were filmed in the country.

Li Zicheng, 30, who works for a film production company in Bangkok, said movie audience figures in Thailand were lower than those in China so the country produced fewer big-budget films.

Thai television series began to be introduced to China in 2006, and popular Thai actors, such as Mos and Pong Nawat, have become firm favourites, with Pong, having more than 200,000 followers on micro blog platform weibo.com.
