| "Vagabonds" Crowned World Breakdance Champions Posted: 19 Nov 2012 05:25 PM PST | The world's best break dancing crews converged on the French city of Montpellier on Saturday (November 17). They are there to compete in the Braun Battle of the Year (BOTY), the world championship of break dancing. Nineteen teams competed, with each crew performing a six-minute choreographed routine. Unlike in previous years six instead of four, then went on to the final battle stage. The judges looked at synchronicity, stage presence, choreography, and their choice of music. And the French team Vagabonds took the top prize for the second year in a row. [Member of Vagabonds Break Dancing Group] "Vagabonds are the winners of the 2012 battle. We've represented all the French, and represented France... We put on the best show... that's how it is: we are Vagabonds." The nomination was a win for the host country, but a bitter disappointment for the Asian and other crews who traveled so far. The Braun Battle of the Year started in Germany in 1990 and is now the longest-running and biggest break dance competition in the world. | How China's Leaders Quashed the Party's Second Power Center Posted: 19 Nov 2012 05:18 PM PST | Full Episode: youtu.be Join us on China Focus as we discuss the significance of the move, and whether it will lead to meaningful change. Imagine a department within the US government that controls the police, the court system (including lawyers), the Justice Department, the Supreme Court, and the NSA, FBI and CIA. Well there is such a department in China, and it's not controlled by the government, but by the Chinese Communist Party. It's called the PLAC. The name has been translated several different ways: the Political and Legislative Affairs Committee, the Political and Legal Affairs Committee, the Central Politics and Law Committee. But no matter what you call it, for a decade, this department became a second center of power within the Party, controlling a budget larger than the military. And it formed the single biggest political challenge to leaders Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao. But in the wake of the Bo Xilai scandal, everything changed. Bo Xilai, as the protégé of Zhou Yongkang, would have likely become the next head of the PLAC. But Bo was taken down. And during the 18th Party Congress, the Party leaders downgraded the PLAC. The next leader of the PLAC will no longer sit on the Politburo Standing Committee, the top ruling body of the Communist Party. | Views: 2 0 ratings | | Time: 00:23 | More in News & Politics |

| World's Longest Chocolate Train and Longest Chocolate Structure in the World Posted: 19 Nov 2012 05:11 PM PST | A Maltese artist makes the longest chocolate train in the world as Brussels Chocolate Week kicks off. The 112-foot long train set a new Guinness World Record as the longest chocolate structure. At a busy train station in Brussels, Belgium a new train has just pulled into the station. And it's the longest train in the world. The longest chocolate train that is. It took over 700 hours to create and is 112-feet long, making it the longest chocolate structure on record. And it is being recorded. The Guinness Book of World Records measured it on Monday, verifying it's almost three thousand pounds of pure chocolate and the longest chocolate structure to date. It's so long, it even created the category of longest chocolate structure in the world. [Andrew Farrugia, Chocolate Artist]: "...Actually it was going to be much smaller than it was, but I kept on adding another wagon, and another wagon, and it's the size it is today." And the length isn't the only impressive thing about the train. The intricate detail the artist used makes it look impressively life-like. [Andrew Farrugia, Chocolate Artist]: "Something like this, there's no moulds involved. Everything is done from an idea, sketches, then you have to do the plans for each wagon, and then you have to start the build-up..." But despite his careful plans and sketches, nothing could prepare it for a bumpy ride to the expo site. Three days before the event, the chocolate train was almost derailed during the train ride to the ... | Views: 1 0 ratings | | Time: 01:36 | More in Entertainment |

| USPresident Obama meets Burma's Aung San Suu Kyi Posted: 19 Nov 2012 03:54 PM PST | US President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visit democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi in Burma. Full story: US President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are in Burma this week as part of a whirlwind tour of Asia. On Monday they visited pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi at her lakeside house in Yangon, Burma. Aung San Suu Kyi is the head of the National League for Democracy, and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. She was the opposition leader against the former socialist military junta and has been in and out of house arrest since 1989. She was officially released in 2010 after the country made an ideological push towards democracy. Suu Kyi thanked Obama for supporting the political reform process, but cautioned about difficult times ahead. [Aung San Suu Kyi, pro-democracy leader]: "I said 'difficult', because the most difficult time in any transition is when we think that success is in sight, then we have to be very careful that we are not lured by a mirage of success, that we are working towards a genuine success for our people and for the friendship between our two countries." Obama is the first serving US President to visit the formerly isolated state, and says he wants to acknowledge democratic reforms the country has made. [Barack Obama, US President]: "Our goal is to sustain the momentum for democratization, that includes building credible government institutions, establishing rule of law, and ending ethnic conflicts and ... | Views: 0 0 ratings | | Time: 02:02 | More in News & Politics |

| China's Domestic Security Chief Has His Claws Trimmed Posted: 19 Nov 2012 03:47 PM PST | China's all-powerful security organ has been down-graded—at least in terms of the political standing of its new chief. China's state-run Xinhua News Agency reported today that Meng Jianzhu, the Public Security Minister, will replace current security czar Zhou Yonkang, as the head of the Political and Legislative Affairs Committee. Known as the PLAC, it oversees police, secret police, the judiciary, and para-military troops. It had grown vastly powerful over the past decade with Zhou and his predecessor placed in the top ruling circle, the Politburo Standing Committee. Zhou was slated to retired after last week's power-transition anyway, but his successor will no longer enjoy the senior status he had. Meng Jianzhu is now only a member of the lower-ranked Politburo, suggesting the Communist regime has shaved power off the PLAC. Zhou had overseen the ironfisted suppression of dissent, in particular, the persecution of the Falun Gong spiritual practice. Some described the PLAC as having turned into China's "second power base". It received more money to run than China's defense force, and has been credited with damaging the rule of law in the country. | Rare Rhino Calves Seen on Hidden Camera Posted: 19 Nov 2012 03:46 PM PST | Six Javan Rhino calves are seen on hidden camera in Indonesia's Ujung Kulon National Park. Full story: Endangered Rhinoceroses were recorded on video in Ujung Kulon National Park in Indonesia, park officials said, giving new hope that the species is still breeding. The Javan Rhinoceroses were caught on motion-activated video cameras in November. It shows a mother and her six new calves walking around the dense tropical forests of West Java. Mohammad Haryono, head of the park, says that with the six calves, there are at least 41 rhinos in the forests. [Mohammad Haryono]: "Judging from the size of their bodies, we estimated the six calves are between one to two years of age. They are also still with their mothers." Thirty-five adult rhinos were recorded on video last December. The World Wildlife Fund says that there are as few as 40 Javan Rhinos left in the world, making it the one of rarest extant mammals. The WWF is working with other conservation groups to protect the species, which is threatened by poaching, disease from domestic cattle and habitat loss. | Chen Kaige's "Caught in the Web" Delves into Chinese Cyberspace Posted: 19 Nov 2012 03:42 PM PST | On Tuesday, (November 13), Chen Kaige, who is known for historic epics including Farewell My Concubine, addressed an audience in Hong Kong University about his latest film "Caught in the Web". An Oscar contender, the film delves into modern-day China, where the internet has turned into a home for citizen vigilantes or the phenomenon known as "Human flesh searching". While the film views the trend through a critical lens, Chen stressed the need for film-makers to stay true to themselves, and also to be clear on what they want to convey. He says his film is about humanity, and the need to protect rights. [Chen Kaige, Director, "Caught in the Web"] "We have always talked about how much progress China has made in the past three decades. But as long as human rights cannot be guaranteed, I don't think we have seen real progress." Chen grew up during China's Cultural Revolution. During his speech, he said it provided inspiration for his former film "Yellow Earth." [Chen Kaige, Director, "Caught in the Web"] "When the Cultural Revolution erupted, my whole life changed. My father turned from a respected Chinese film director into a public enemy. My life changed, I lost my friends and my chances to go to school." "Caught in the Web" looks at the explosive growth of China's cyberspace. While being one of the most censored in the world, it's also become a place for citizens to track down individuals—for both good and bad reasons. | Dalai Lama says China Must Move Towards Democracy Posted: 19 Nov 2012 03:32 PM PST | On Saturday (November 17), exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama called on the new Chinese leadership to adopt polices that would move towards democracy and 'openness.' Last week, China's ruling Communist Party unveiled a new lineup of leaders following the conclusion of the 18th Party Congress. [Dalai Lama, Exiled Tibetan Spiritual Leader]: "They (China's new leadership) have to sort of adopt the policies on the basis of reality and all of these unrealistic policies always fail to bring rest." The Dalai Lama stressed the importance of India-China relations in resolving the Tibet crisis. [Dalai Lama, Exiled Tibetan Spiritual Leader]: "The Tibet issue is an important factor in order to develop genuine friendship between these two Asian giants, based on mutual trust." Earlier this week, the Dalai Lama also pressed the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to investigate the rise of self-immolations by Tibetans. Recently, the United Nations' most senior human rights official called on China to address frustrations that led to the desperate protests. Since March 2011, there have been 74 confirmed cases. | China News Broadcast, November 19, 2012: ASEAN Tensions, Homeless Boys Die in Dumpster Posted: 19 Nov 2012 03:27 PM PST | In today's NTD China News, this weekend's supposed agreement over China's dispute with its neighbors over the South China Sea territorial disputes appears short-lived for ASEAN. The Philippines refuted on Monday Cambodia's claim that an understanding had been reached. Communist Party leader Xi Jinping has again warned that corruption could bring down the Party, during his address to the newly announced 25-member Politburo over the weekend. Chinese state-run media announces that that head of the powerful Political and Legislative Affairs Committee will now be Meng Jianzhu. This effectively slashes power from the security apparatus, as Meng is not in the Politburo Standing Committee ruling circle like his predecessor Zhou Yongkang. Netizens fear there will be further tightening of the internet, after propaganda chief, Liu Yunshan, was elevated to the Politburo Standing Committee last week. Liu is known for having a tight grip on media freedom. The Dalai Lama has agained called for a democratic future for China. Five homeless boys were discovered dead in a dumpster in southwestern Guizhou province. The case has drawn outrage on Chinese internet. Chinese authorities say they have broken a ring that produced and sold nearly one million counterfeit luxury products, like Louis Vuitton, Coach and Hermes handbags. Chinese film director Chen Kaige recently spoke in Hong Kong about his thoughts on moving-making, after the release of his latest film "Caught on the Web". | Scientist Fears Radiation Is Still Leaking at Fukushima Nuclear Plant Posted: 19 Nov 2012 03:22 PM PST | US marine scientist says he fears high radiation levels found in fish near Japan's Fukushima Prefecture could mean a continued radiation leak from the Daiichi Nuclear Plant. Full Story: The fish that Kozo Endo and his crew manage to catch on Monday are headed not for market -- but to a nearby laboratory. They're fishing in waters off the coast of Japan's Fukushima Nuclear Plant, crippled by last year's tsunami when its failing reactors spewed radiation into the sea. While many fish in the area are below the country's permitted radiation levels, bottom-feeders that live near the sea-floor are still topping the bar. Marine chemist Ken Buesseler says fish should now be free from radiation a year and a half after the meltdown. [Ken Buesseler, Senior Scientist, Wood's Hole Oceanographic Institute]: "It's a salt, caesium -- like potassium. So very quickly if you shut off the source, they should be going down a few percent a day. In two or three months it would be practically all gone, and we don't see that in the fish they're sampling throughout 2012." A respected geochemist known for his studies of radioactive fallout in the Black Sea after Chernobyl, Buesseler hit the headlines last month when he suggested that radiation could still be leaking. [Ken Buesseler, Senior Scientist, Wood's Hole Oceanographic Institute]: "There has to be a source. And they're cooling those reactors quite extensively, some of that water's getting back into the ocean, either actively being pumped out ... | Views: 4 0 ratings | | Time: 01:30 | More in Science & Technology |

| Xi Jinping Warns Of Party Corruption Posted: 19 Nov 2012 03:15 PM PST | New Communist Party head Xi Jinping has again warned corruption could cause the collapse of the ruling party if it's allowed to continue unchecked. Xi spoke on the weekend to the newly announced 25-member Politburo, state-run Xinhua News Agecny reported on Monday. Despite highlighting the dangers of corruption, Xi did not explain how the communist regime will address the problem. Xi acknowledged the wave of high profile graft cases involving senior communist officials, calling corruption, quote, "worms breeding in decaying matter." Ahead of last week's power transition, the Communist Party was gripped by the scandal of disgraced official Bo Xilai. He's being investigated for corruption and abuse of power. His wife Gu Kalai received a suspended death sentence for murdering British businessman Neil Heywood. During the weekend meeting, Xi Jinping also said staff and family members of corrupt officials need to be held accountable. | Outrage After Five Boys' "Dumpster Death" in Guizhou Posted: 19 Nov 2012 03:09 PM PST | Five young lives perished, and this was their final resting place. Last Friday, locals found the bodies of five boys in this dumpster in southwestern Guizhou province, state-run Beijing News reported on Sunday. Authorities have now said they died from carbon monoxide poisoning. The homeless boys were believed to have lit a fire to keep warm. The night before they died the temperature in the mountainous Bijie City had dropped to 43 degrees. The news of the tragic discovery has since raged online, with more than two million posts appearing on the Twitter-like Sina Weibo. Locals posted pictures of the area where the boys had earlier set up makeshift shelter. They were believed to have been aged between seven to thirteen-years-old Some compared the boys' death to the children's tale "The Little Match Girl" who died amidst the cold of night. Others began to point the fingers at local officials. Pictures of the Bijie's Party Secretary, Zhang Jiyong, sporting expensive belts are now being circulated online. Netizens are asking whether local authorities could have prevented the tragedy. Some highlighted the irony of this report in October, where Zhang said the livelihood of the people was a responsibility greater than the weight of a mountain. News of the boys' death was first reported by this netizen, Li Yuanlong, one day before official media made it public. Li, a former netizen, said authorities had asked him to remove his post, but he ignored the order. For more news and ... | Views: 4 1 ratings | | Time: 01:29 | More in News & Politics |

| No ASEAN Agreement on South China Sea Posted: 19 Nov 2012 03:02 PM PST | It came as a surprise yesterday when the Association of South East Asian Nations, or ASEAN, announced a unified decision not to "internationalize" territorial conflicts in the South China Sea. But it came as a bigger shock earlier today when the Philippines asserted that unified decision was never made. The initial announcement was made by Cambodia, chair of ASEAN and close ally of China. But on Monday, as Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen began to conclude the meeting, Philippine President Benigno Aquino abruptly interrupted and said the consensus had never been reached. The Chinese regime has aggressively asserted claims to the oil rich waters in the South China Sea. It's expressed a preference to handle disputes bilaterally and not through organizations like ASEAN. Cambodia has been seen as assisting the Chinese regime to avoid discussions. As Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in Phnom Penh over the weekend, China extended a $100 million loan to Cambodia for a cement plant. On Monday, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda accused Cambodia of using its position as ASEAN chair to limit talks on the dispute, warning it could impact on the region's peace and stability. The thorny issue over the South China Sea also made ASEAN history back in July. It was the first time that ASEAN's annual meeting failed to make a joint communiqué in its 45-year history. The fresh tensions came ahead of a meeting between US President Barack Obama and ASEAN leaders. Obama will also meet ... | Views: 11 0 ratings | | Time: 01:42 | More in News & Politics |

| Mayan City Restoration in Mexico Posted: 19 Nov 2012 11:10 AM PST | Archaeologists in Mexico painstakingly restore the abandoned ancient Mayan city of Dzibanche, revealing murals dedicated to the Kaan Dynasty of the mysterious civilisation's "Classic Period". Full Story: Archaeologists unveiled a newly restored Mayan city, as experts aim to return the crumbling ancient metropolis to its former glory. The city of Dzibanche lies on the Yucatan Peninsula and it is believed to have been inhabited until the 13th century, even past the "Mayan Collapse." The site features burial chambers and murals dedicated to the Kaan dynasty, one of the most powerful ruling families of the Mayans. [Sandra Balanzario, Archaeologist]: "The importance of this mural, its iconography, tells us of the legitimacy of the Kaan Dynasty in the classic period of Dzibanche. This building in its interior has various burial chambers associated with people from the Kaan Dynasty. The iconography of the mural was in place at the time of the structure which also commemorated the presence of this dynasty." The excavation of the four-part site began in 2008, and through the years, new knowledge about the city had been uncovered; it became apparent that people had continued to reside in the city for four centuries longer than what archaeologists originally thought. The Maya, one of the great ancient civilizations of Mesoamerica, created large cities throughout the region. However, they began abandoning their cities around 900 CE, and there is still no consensus on why this occured ... | Views: 0 0 ratings | | Time: 01:32 | More in News & Politics |

Full Story: The sixth day of Israel's Operation Pillar of Defense in the Gaza Strip sees violence continue to rage. On Monday morning heavy bombardment of the strip continued, and Gaza militants continued to fire rockets at Israel. The death toll in Gaza has now risen to 72, according to health officials. Three Israelis were killed on Thursday. US President Obama, speaking in Thailand, gives his support to Israel's right to defend itself from rocket attacks. [Barack Obama, US. So we are fully supportive of Israel's right to defend itself from missiles landing on peoples homes and workplaces and potentially killing civilians." Israel and Gaza both maintain they are attempting to reach a ceasefire. But there has been no lessening of attacks from either side, and on Sunday the Israeli Prime Minister spoke of preparations to expand the military operation. | Endangered Bear Cub Rescued In Peru Posted: 19 Nov 2012 06:27 AM PST | A four-month old spectacled bear cub is rescued from poachers in Peru. Full Story: A bear cub who may have been destined for the illegal pet trade has been rescued from poachers in Peru. The four-month-old cub is now receiving specialist care at Huachipa Zoo in Lima. [Celia Diaz, Vet]: "The story of this four-month-old bear cub is really very tragic. There is a community in Chiclayo called "El Espinal" ("The Chord") where poachers or villagers wounded his mother with two cubs. She was able to flee, probably injured-- we do know she's injured-- with one of the cubs and she abandoned the other, who stayed behind. The villagers caught the cub and kept her in captivity for about ten days. Perhaps because of the food the animal had during this time, she was dehydrated." The little bear, known as "Juanita", is being fed powdered milk high in protein to help regain some of her lost weight. Juanita is a spectacled bear, the only bear native to South America, and an endangered species at risk of extinction. Spectacled bears face numerous threats, including loss of of traditional habitats for development, farmers who kill the animal to protect livestock, and poachers who trade bear parts on the black market for traditional Chinese medicine. According to the World Wide Fund for Nature, hundreds of spectacled bears are hunted down each year, with perhaps as few as 6000 remaining. | Zhang Gaoli's Seat in the Standing Committee Posted: 18 Nov 2012 09:54 PM PST | Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) seven new Politburo Standing Committee members appeared publicly. Straight away, stock in the company belonging to Zhang Gaoli's son-in-law company became very popular. The increase of stock price exceeded the Hang Seng Index. Some commentators said that Zhang being a member of the Standing Committee means the corrupt combination of CCP's power and wealth will continue until the regime collapses. Li Shengpo, Zhang Gaoli's son-in-law, is the majority shareholder his company called "Xinyi Glass". Li Shengpo is also son of Li Shengxian, who is the CCP's Politburo members on behalf of Hong Kong. The Stock price of "Xinyi Glass" shot up on November 16th. The closing price is 4.55 Hong Kong dollars per share with an increase of 2.48%. People think the rising stock price of "Xinyi glass" is completely related to Zhang Gaoli's election into the Standing Committee. Commentator Li Zixu: "As soon as Zhao Gaoli earned a seat in the Standing Committee, the stock price of his son-in-law's company shot up. The reason is that people all know about CCP's corrupt system and rules of game.
