euronews le mag - Kapoor goes Gangnam for Ai Weiwei Posted: 23 Nov 2012 09:54 AM PST | www.euronews.com The reknowned sculptor Anish Kapoor has made a "Gangnam Style" video in support of the Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei. The moves in "Gangnam for Freedom," are the work of leading choreographer Akram Khan and the dance features prominent figures from the British art world. English National Ballet's prima ballerina Tamara Rojo plays the role of "sexy lady." In the new video Kapoor echoes a version made by Ai Weiwei that angered the Chinese authorities. He wears handcuffs and his mouth is taped up. Anish Kapoor said: "This is about dissidents, all those people in the world who're imprisoned unfairly, poets, writers, journalists, etc. My colleague Ai Weiwei of course made a Gangnam Style video. It was taken off the web within 24 hours in China, and we're hoping we'll replace it." There are also contributions from galleries around the world including the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego. The original song and video by the South Korean pop star Psy has become a global hit and spawned many imitations. Amnesty International said it is "a rousing and captivating way to bring some serious fun to a serious issue." Mark Malloch-Brown: The poor will live in 'an arc of weak states' Posted: 19 Nov 2012 03:47 AM PST | Mark Malloch-Brown: The poor will live in 'an arc of weak states' Mark Malloch-Brown, who helped devise the millennium development goals, says the economic success of countries such as China and India 'is eating away at that remaining pool of poverty very, very rapidly'. In the future, a larger proportion of the world's poor will live in troubled countries such as Yemen, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Development should no longer be limited to jobs, health and education, he says. Instead it should concentrate on building accountable, democratic institutions. Japan economy shrinks as recession looms Posted: 12 Nov 2012 07:31 AM PST | www.euronews.com Japan - the world's third-largest economy - shrank in the third quarter for the first time since last year. The figures add to signs that slowing global growth and tensions with China are nudging the country towards recession. The fall in GDP by just under one percent was expected, though a decline in capital expenditure was much steeper than forecast. In the country's ailing electronics sector, Sony plans to reduce capital spending by around 29 percent while Panasonic are looking at a 27 percent cut. Economy minister Seiji Maehara said, "I cannot deny that Japan has fallen into a recession phase," after the data was released.
