Hong Kong Busts $1.4 mil. Illegal Ivory Shipment

Hong Kong's Port officials announced on Friday they had seized almost three thousand pounds of illegal ivory. They said the hull off 659 rhino and elephant tusks is worth an estimated $1.4 million dollars. The ivory came on a ship from Dubai but is thought to have originated from Southern Africa. Officials discovered the illegal goods after selecting a box for random profiling, said to contain sunflower seeds. Hong Kong officials say this is the second large shipment of illegal ivory they have seized in the last month. [Vincent Wong, Head of Ports Control Group]: "Hong Kong ranks number three in container throughput. We are proud of our container port. Every day on average, there are 80 ocean-going vessels carrying hundreds and thousands of boxes, coming in and out of Hong Kong. Smugglers might think this is a good chance to smuggle goods, but we have intelligence exchange, we have determination. Hong Kong customs has the capability in determining smuggling activities. We will give them a hard blow." Hong Kong is seen to be used as a transport point for smuggling ivory into China. Rights activists blame Chinese presence in Africa for fueling the illegal ivory trade and poaching endangered species for their tusks.
