Click here: www.youtube.com On Sunday August 19, 2012: China's State run CCTV announced that Lhasa is the Happiest city in China! That's the same place where anti-Chinese regime sentiment has resulted in several self-immolation protests. News Link: ntdtv.org This isn't the first year that Lhasa has been called China's happiest city either. It's taken the title for five years. But not everyone agrees. Dawa Tsering, the director of the Religious Foundation of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, say Tibet is likely to take out other titles, before it can even be considered a city of happiness. [Dawa Tsering Director, Religious Foundation of His Holiness the Dalai Lama]: "It could be the place with the highest density of police, the most number of surveillance cameras, or even prostitutes. But it cannot make any ranking for happiness." Hubei resident Mr Yan says Lhasa the fact that Tibet is constantly under tight security indicates the situation there isn't as how officials describe. [Mr Yan, Hubei Resident]: "Lhasa is under some kind of martial law control, and has a lot of military police station there. You can't enter and leave there like other places in China. There's also serious religious conflict there with many Tibetans self-immolating. It all goes to show that region is not so great." China's Tibetan region is home to mainly Tibetan Buddhists. After the Chinese Communist Party claimed control of the region in 1949, locals have chafed at strict restrictions on their religion ...

Kobe Bryant Scores 68 points in 15 minutes

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 10:36 AM PDT

NBA superstar Kobe Bryant joined forces with Taiwanese pop singer Jay Chou for a charity basketball extravaganza in Shanghai on Saturday night. More than 6000 fans cheered as Bryant appeared with a guitar in his arms and Chou with a basketball. The Los Angeles Lakers defender scored 68 points in 15 minutes in the charity game, but the final score was bumped up to 88 points after fans were invited to send in text messaging votes for both sides. Bryant, who led the US team to victory at the London Olympics earlier this month, says he's satisfied with his performance at the Games, which will be his last. [Kobe Bryant, NBA Star]: "I have to give myself a ten because I did what I was supposed to do. My job in the team is to take the best player on the other team and try to stop him from scoring the ball. And then, when the opportunity presents itself, to score big baskets for my team, and I was able to do that. And then in terms of next Olympics, unfortunately, no, that's it for me. It was the last Olympics for me." The event raised over $400000 in ticket revenue, which will go towards building and improving basketball facilities in Project Hope schools for underprivileged children in China. Bryant and Chou worked together last year on a television commercial and a theme song called "The Heaven and Earth Challenge" for China Sprite, both of which also raised funds for Project Hope. This is the seventh summer in a row that the NBA star has travelled to China, where he is hugely ...

Chinese Historical Relics Systematically Destroyed

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 10:30 AM PDT

According to official documents, more than 40000 historical sites have disappeared in China within the past 30 years. Over half of them were destroyed by construction work. According to China's third National Heritage Census Statistics, more than 40000 immovable cultural relics have also disappeared. An investigation revealed that to avoid archaeological investigation, some developers and local authorities intentionally destroyed historical sites. [Professor Zhang Zanning, Southeast University School of Law]: "During the Cultural Revolution, Chinese civilization was intentionally destroyed. Now the destruction of Chinese relics is done by various levels of government in their quest for gain. This is mainly because China's law system lacks effective supervision. As long as it is government behavior, it does not have to be supervised." Late last week, NTD called the State Administration of Cultural Heritage's Inspector Division, and its Press and Publicity Department for comment. The response: "We've never received any phone interviews, we cannot give you an answer." Within the last three years, the city of Changsha has demolished five historical sites. One of the last well-preserved museums was built during the years of Kangxi, the second emperor of the Qing Dynasty. Residents in Suzhou City offered to pay for the museum's renovation, yet it was still demolished. [Sun Wenguang, Retired Shandong University Professor]: "Of course, on one hand, the local authorities got into ...

The fire which started on Saturday has burnt out half of this years crop of Mastic gum, and it is still burning out of control. Hundreds of firefighters and soldiers with the aid of helicopters are battling the fire, but they are being hindered by gale force winds fanning the flames. Mastic gum trees are unique to this island and are the main source of income for the people of Chios. Mastic produced from these trees is used to make everything from chewing gum to soaps to liquor, bringing in an annual revenue of over 18 million US dollars. China News Broadcast: Gu Kailai's Sentence and anti-Japan Protests

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 10:44 PM PDT

A Hefei city court sentenced Gu Kailai, the wife of disgraced Politburo member Bo Xilai, to death on Monday, but has suspended her execution by two years. This is the latest development in a scandal that's shaken the ruling Communist regime ahead of a leadership transition later this year. There's been no official word on what will happen to Wang Lijun, the former police chief who set off the string of political upsets that resulted in Gu Kailai's suspended sentence on Monday. Rights groups have claimed that Wang Lijun was involved in the taking of organs from prisoners of conscience, though one analyst believes it's unlikely these allegations will ever be made public by Chinese authorities. There is another twist in the dispute over the ownership of the Diaoyu—or as they are known in Japan, Senkaku—Islands group in the East China Sea. Ten or so Japanese nationalists swam ashore one of the islands and planted a flag saying "Japanese Territory." The video of the action was released by nationalist-leaning Japanese internet video network, Sakura on Monday. Over the weekend (August 19), anti-Japanese protests erupted in several cities across China. The protests were sparked by the dispute over the Senkaku, or Diaoyu Islands—an island chain claimed by both China and Japan. If you are planning a trip to China, you might want to leave some extra time. Since December of last year the requirements for getting a visa from almost all countries have increased. High Real Estate Prices in July Manipulated by the State: China Analyst

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 10:25 PM PDT

New-home prices in China bounced back slightly in July, according to the China National Bureau of Statistics. The figures released over the weekend add small comfort to China's economic climate, amidst a series of data showing a downward trend for the quarter. The rebound does not convince everyone though. Some analysts believe that the increase in housing prices is an artificial outcome, achieved through the state-control of land supply and taxation of during the purchasing period. A professor from the Party School of the Communist Party, Zhou Tianyong, recently told Chinese media that severe land shortage is behind the high prices, and that, (quote) "all the administrative control of 18 hundred million acres [of land] must be annulled." Zhou also believes costly land transfer fees and heavy property taxes have contributed to high property prices. An economics analyst from the China's State Council agrees. [Economics Analyst, China's State Council] "70% [of the cost is government tax]. There is tax involved in every layer from land purchase to construction to sales. For example, the cost of acquiring the land goes directly to the government. During development, there are several red tape costs. Upon completion, the sales tax is 42%. So the state is behind the high housing prices -- it has a monopoly on the land, and imposes high taxes." July's jump in new-home prices may prompt Chinese regulators to hold off on monetary policies changes. Premier Wen Jiabao had hinted at ...

Analysts: Chinese Authorities Using Anti-Japan Protests

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 10:19 PM PDT

Over the weekend (August 19), anti-Japanese protests erupted in several cities across China. The protests were sparked by the dispute over the Senkaku, or Diaoyu Islands—an island chain claimed by both China and Japan. Last week, Japan deported 14 Chinese activists who tried to land on one of the islands. On Sunday, right-wing Japanese activists attempted a similar landing. Thousands of protestors in cities including Shenzhen, Shandong, and Chengdu called on a boycott of Japanese goods, burned Japanese flags, and damaged Japanese restaurants and vehicles. Activist and artist He Guoquan says the protests were likely staged. [He Guoquan, Artist] "The authorities ban mass protests in China. But now they allowed such demonstrations, and the police even cleared the route for the march. In China, police intervene in group activities, even if they have gathered to read poetry. So the anti-Japanese parades were very unusual.." Analysts say that although the Chinese regime has made strong statements about the Diaoyu islands, it has done little about the issue. They say the Party is instead using nationalism to distract attention from domestic issues and the power struggle within the CCP. Officials seem to be aware of inciting too much activism. The nationalistic state-run paper The Global Times ran an editorial calling for moderation. Discussions on the issue were censored on Weibo. In Shandong, demonstrators clashed with police as the protest became increasingly violent. Some ...

The Chongqing police have repeatedly stated that, all online questions regarding Zhou Kehua stem from misunderstandings and misinformation. On August 18, Hu Zhaohui, a Guangzhou lawyer, posted on his microblog: "As a lawyer, from the criminal proceedings point of view, I feel there are questions on regarding Zhou Kehua's death and on how he was killed—the deceased may not be Zhou; is this sort of thing possible? I integrated a large number of on-site pictures as well as Internet users' questions to give an in-depth analysis from five aspects of this case." Lawyer Hu had served in the military police for 23 years, had worked under the military law department for many years and had also experienced the Vietnam War in the early 80's. Hu analyses the Zhou Kehua case from five aspects: First—how was Zhou Kehua actually killed? Second—is an objective investigation being conducted on the shooting scene? Third—are the two policemen who allegedly killed Zhou Kehua telling the truth? Four—is the deceased indeed the ruthless criminal, Zhou, or had they killed a plain clothes policeman by mistake? Hu Jintao's New Plan Features Wang Yang

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 02:52 AM PDT

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com Before CCP leaders' Beidaihe meeting, Guangdong Party Secretary Wang Yang appeared in media, dressed in military uniform. Recently foreign media reported the Beidaihe meetings produced a new list of CCP Committee members, which will come as a surprise to the public. In addition, CCP's Central Military Commission will also see significant personnel changes. The Hu faction hopes that Wang Yang and others enter CMC. Some foreign media released news that before Beidaihe meeting, Hu Jintao prepared three different plans, all for personnel change after CCP's 18th National Assembly. The first plan will allow Hu to continue serving as Chairman of Central Military Commission. The second option completely excludes Hu Jintao from the central leadership, bringing potential threats to the Youth-League faction. A compromise between the first two, the third plan allows Hu Jintao to nominate people on his side into central leadership, while he himself will step down. Among the new 7 Standing Committee members, Wang Yang will serve as Secretary to the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, partly in charge of military affairs, and current Vice Premier Li Keqiang will serve as vice chairman of CMC. Gu Kailai Gets Suspended Death Sentence

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 02:51 AM PDT

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com Kailai, wife of Bo Xilai, has received a suspended death sentence after being found guilty, on August 20, of murdering UK businessman Neil Heywood. Media and public opinion expected this verdict. Comments have focused on remaining doubts and inconsistencies in the case. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) judiciary is thought to use suspended sentences to hide greater evils. It cannot be excluded that Hu Jintao & Wen Jiabao have deliberately kept Gu Kailai alive in order to shock and awe Jiang Zemin's blood-debt faction. Gu Kailai was transported in a prison van to Hefei Intermediate People's Court at 7am on August 20. A cordon was set up outside the courthouse, and guarded by plainclothes police. At around 9:40am, Hong Kong media were first to report that Gu Kailai was given a suspended death sentence. Gu's accomplice, Zhang Xiaojun, was sentenced to nine years in jail. Official CCP Xinhua News Agency did not release reports on the case verdict until 13:28 that day. This official news reported that over 100 people attended the verdict announcement. Attendees included relatives and friends of the accused Gu and Zhang, as well as British Embassy officials. Neil Heywoods relatives had appointed an agent ad litem, who was present in court. The court was opened at 9:00 am, followed by the verdict announcement. Both Gu Kailai and Zhang Xiaojun declined to appeal. Four former Chongqing senior police officers ...

In terms of investment strategies, this would be a favorable opportunity. However, at the same time, overseas media fear that if this continues, the European economy could become too dependent on China. Other motives could become hidden behind the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). "Radio France Internationale" reported in an article by Dr. Pierre Bikar that according to incomplete statistics, in the last three years, Chinese foreign investment in Europe has risen from two percent to ten percent. In addition to Germany and the United Kingdom, investment in the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, and Eastern Europe is growing. The investment targets almost reflect the respective strengths of each country. The article, entitled "how to take advantage of the crisis to buy European enterprises" also said that in the opinion of Chinese investment professionals in Europe, you should buy now. There are only a few success cases to date, but this is just the beginning, it said. Xia Yeliang, a professor at the School of Economics at Peking University commented. In observing the past few decades, CCP foreign investments have brought little return in revenue. Xia Yeliang: "Loss and bankruptcy cases can be found everywhere.
