Accounts emerge of trial Scandal timeline The wife of disgraced Chinese politician Bo Xilai has been given a suspended death sentence for the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood. Gu Kailai did not contest charges at her one-day trial that she poisoned Mr Heywood in November 2011. Suspended death sentences are usually commuted to life imprisonment in China. Mr Bo, the former party chief in Chongqing, was once seen as a contender for a national leadership position in a top-level reshuffle later this year. But he has not been seen in public since the investigation into Gu was announced. The BBC's Damian Grammaticas, outside the court in Hefei, says Gu is expected to serve at least 14 years in prison. Gu's aide, Zhang Xiaojun, was jailed for nine years for his part in the murder. 'Huge stone' The verdict in China's most high-profile trial for years came early on Monday, inside a court ringed by security personnel. Chinese state media has reported that during the 9 August trial - which was not open to all - Gu admitted she poisoned Neil Heywood in a hotel room in Chongqing, accompanied by her aide ...

China, furiosa por los nacionalistas japoneses

Posted: 19 Aug 2012 08:31 AM PDT

China Focus - Gu Kailai, Bo Xilai, and China's Black Market Body Trade

Posted: 16 Aug 2012 05:29 PM PDT

You've probably heard the controversy surrounding the international exhibitions that display plastinated human bodies—a controversy over where the bodies came from. Well now, an inside source has told NTD that Bo Xilai and Gu Kailai were involved in facilitating the sale of unclaimed human bodies—people who did not give consent. We're talking about Bo Xilai, the ousted Chinese Communist Party secretary, and his wife Gu Kailai, who was recently tried for murdering a British citizen. So we set out to verify this information. We'll tell you what we know, what's unconfirmed but is logically the most likely, and what still needs further investigation. The technique for plastinating human bodies was developed by this guy: German doctor Gunther von Hagens. He visited the city of Dalian in China's Liaoning Province in 1993, after contacting Sui Hongjin (隋鸿锦), an assistant professor at Dalian Medical University. The two built a relationship. And in December 1996, von Hagens accepted a visiting professorship at Dalian Medical University. A few years later, von Hagens set up a plastination company called von Hagens Dalian Plastination Ltd, and hired Sui as his general manager. There's conflicting info about when von Hagens founded the company, though. Von Hagens' Body Worlds website claims it was in 2001, but company registration documents show that the Dalian city government approved the company in August 1999—while Bo Xilai was still mayor of Dalian. According to this report ...

Ashraf Laidi on China's Currency & Eurozone to AlArabiya - April 14, 2012

Posted: 14 Apr 2012 07:22 PM PDT

Ashraf tells AlArabiya that China's decision to widen its currency fluctuation band against the USD to 1.0% is another signal that the Chinese yuan (RMB) will be heading lower or remain flat at best into the end of the year. Ashraf has shown one day before today's announcement how CNY (green line) was immobile during the 2008 financial crisis. Today, the currency seems to be entering a new phase of immobility, but this time, justified by weakening data (GDP, CPI and trade balance) . As the currency remains unchanged (or declines) and GDP growth consolidates to 7.5% level, this raises serious questions about Chinese overall commodity demand. Copper (China's hot commodity) is already 20% below last year's highs. If commodity traders no longer find solace from the Fed asset purchases, then the short-lived declines we saw recently in metals and energy may be here to stay... especially when combined that sluggish Chinese demand and a weaker CNY. Spanish government bonds are now the latest victim of bond traders typical one-country assault amid speculation that Spain will be the 4th recipient of a Eurozone bailout. At a time of deepening recession, Spanish authorities have selected education and health sectors for 10 billion in budget cuts. Cuts in these sectors have yet to prove successful or sustainable the he Eurozone. Little surprise that the biggest yield gainers are of nations, which are not yet bailed out Spain and Italy. The combination of protracted gains in Spanish ...

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 05:16 AM PDT

Two Japanese cabinet ministers have stirred a regional diplomatic row by visiting a controversial shrine. South Korea's President Lee Myung-bak has criticised the visit and called on Japan to apologise for its crimes against humanity. Al Jazeera's Harry Fawcett explains.
