Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo has visited members of the Chinese sports delegation in London Olympic Village. He extended cordial greetings and good wishes to the delegation on behalf of the Communist Party of China, Central Committee and State Council. He encouraged them to pursue the Olympic spirit of "higher, faster and stronger" and strive for success. Dai characterized the large delegation of 621 members as both athletes and envoys of friendship. He told the athletes to show the positive attitude and confidence of the Chinese people to the whole world. Dai also visited athletes' dormitories and the main dining hall in the Olympic Village. He will attend the opening ceremony on Friday.

Although she missed out on being named the flagbearer for Team China, Li Na, China's top tennis player was able to take part in the Olympics Torch Relay on Wednesday. Li, taking a day off from her preparations to create her own very special Games' memory. Li Na said, "This is the first time I have participated in the Olympic torch relay. I will cherish the experience. The Olympic Games are unique." On Wednesday, thousands of London residents cheered on the torch relay in the northern part of the city. The 147th torch bearer on Wednesday, Li looked relaxed and happy in her 320-meter route. London could be Li's last Olympics... and she said she'll try her best to bring gold home to China. Olympic Tennis will be held from July 28th to August 5th with Li scheduled to play in the singles event and doubles with Zhang Shuai. Four years ago in Beijing, Li finished fourth place in women's singles, the best result achieved by a Chinese tennis player at an Olympics.

Tianjin transport returns to normal after downpour Posted: 26 Jul 2012 11:16 PM PDT 视频播放位置 下载安装Flash播放器Transport in the Tianjin Municipality has returned to normal after Thursday's downpour. Tianjin meteorological center says average rainfall reached 147 millimeters, with the maximum exceeding 300. The torrential rain flooded roads in the downtown area. The fire prevention bureau sent 190 fire engines and more than 11 hundred rescuers to help stranded vehicles and pedestrians. No cases of drowning have been reported. Four people were electrocuted and are receiving treatment in hospital. The extreme weather also disrupted air traffic. 20 flights were cancelled and 34 delayed. China's central weather bureau says rain can be expected in northern China over the coming three days.

Local authorities in Pu'an county say 53 miners have been rescued so far. The rescue operation is in full swing to save the remaining 5. A rescue and relief command center is now organizing a 400-member rescue team. The 5 trapped miners are said to be 450 meters under the wellhead.

They said they want to hold a vigil on the islands for the victims of a refugee shipwreck during the Second World War. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has said he will discuss the matter in the cabinet, which will decide whether to give a go-ahead. Noda also says he agrees that only government members could visit the islands, but he respects the lawmakers' will of mourning the WWII refugees. Noda adds the purchase procedures of the Diaoyu islands are underway, and the Japanese government aims to nationalize the islands by April 2013. In response, China has voiced strong opposition over Japan's unilateral move on the Diaoyu Islands. The Diaoyu Islands have been China's inherent territory since ancient times. And the Chinese side will continue its efforts to protect its sovereignty over the area. | ||||
