Speaking at the Forum on Industrial International Competitiveness in Shanghai, experts called for further market reforms from China and the rest of the world to prevent trade frictions. William Barringer, senior partner at Curtis Mallet, said that by joining the WTO, China greatly boosted its trade volumes, notably in the textile, metals, and machinery sectors from the lowering of tariffs in major markets. Barringer added that the level playing field of lower tariffs allowed China to develop global competitiveness in numerous industries, but while these drivers still exist, they have less momentum given the size of China's trade volume. Barringer also said that unless China "adds value" to new products, it will fall behind as countries such as Vietnam and Cambodia prove more competitive in terms of labor costs. Listening to this are officials who have been encouraging Chinese companies to move up the value chain, saying they should start creating national brands which lay the foundation to create global brands. However, Fredrik Erixon, director of the European Center for International Political Economy, a Brussels-based think tank, said China and the EU are set to experience more friction in trade relations due to changing <b>...</b>

China's disaster lab - Media Watch - December 20 - BONTV

China established a lab in Beijing on Tuesday to develop technologies to minimize the damage of nuclear and biochemical disasters on human health and the environment. The lab will focus on technologies that can evaluate and monitor damage, protect people, facilities and the environment in the event of nuclear and biochemical disasters, and repair the damage, said Pei Chengxin, the lab's director. It is attached to an institute under the People's Liberation Army (PLA) General Armament Department, which has developed several key technologies for civilian use in monitoring poisonous gas and biochemical threats, Pei said. With the support of military research, the lab is expected to develop related technologies for civilian use and train more scientists in this field, he said. The new lab also merges a state-level laboratory of analytical chemistry, a PLA institute on environmental science and a lab on chemical warfare protection.
