Japan's New Government Bids to Restart Nuclear Program

Posted: 29 Dec 2012 04:48 AM PST

Japan's new government announces a three-year deadline for determining whether to restart the bulk of its nuclear reactors in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi meltdown. Full Story: As safety checks continue in the wake of disaster last year, Japan has an ambitious plan to get its controversial nuclear program up and running. The new government announced Friday that it hopes to complete safety checks and determine whether to restart all reactors within three years. All but two of Japan's 50 reactors remain shut down after a March 2011 earthquake and tsunami resulted in one of the worst nuclear disasters in history at the Fukushima Daiichi station. The minister in charge of energy says the government will follow the Nuclear Regulation Authority's recommendations about which reactors to restart. But the agency's chairman said Friday that the three-year deadline is impossible to meet. As part of its inspections, the authority is determining which plants sit on active fault lines vulnerable to earthquakes. Last year's meltdown has prompted large protests as reactors are restarted, giving momentum to the movement to scrap Japan's nuclear energy program altogether. Posted: 28 Dec 2012 09:53 AM PST

Watch the full Keiser Report E386 here on.rt.com In this episode, Max Keiser and Stacy Herbert argue over whether things are looking better or worse for the American worker. While Stacy argues that the return of some manufacturing is a sign that wealth creating jobs may return to the US, Max counters that the system is so corrupt that the chances of labor getting any cut of the wealth is nil and that the internet giants will prevent the rise of a powerful decentralized economy online. In the second half, Max Keiser talks to Professor Jonathan Feldman about the Global Teach-In and about a boycott and short sale campaign and creating an industrial policy for America because right now the US even outsources some military production to China. CCTV: Passer-by sticks out foot to trip up fugitive chased by Chinese cops

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 07:15 AM PST

A resident in the Chinese metropolis of Shanghai who stuck out his left foot to trip up a fugitive on the run at a subway station has earned the name "Golden Left Foot" from Chinese citizens. On Dec. 21, police officer Sheng Song was on duty at the Langaolu Station of the Shanghai metro Line 7 when he found someone very suspicious lingering in front of a ticket vending machine. The suspect avoided eye contact with Sheng and could not provide identification. After checking his birth date in the online database by using his pocket device, Sheng confirmed that the suspicious man was a fugitive who might have been carrying weapons with him. However, another passenger, apparently aware of the situation at hand, extended his left foot to trip the running fugitive. This gave the chasing police officers time to catch up. Wang Dezhong, the Shanghai resident who aided the police, said what he did was nothing. He added that he would extend his foot again if he ran into something like this. China's Coral Reefs Disappearing, Says Study

Posted: 29 Dec 2012 12:59 AM PST

Over the past 30 years, China's coral reefs have shrunk by at least 80 percent, largely due to unrestrained economic expansion, according to a recent study. Scientists from the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies and the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology conducted a survey of mainland China and South China Sea reefs, and published it in the latest edition of Conservation Biology. The authors painted a (quote) "grim picture of decline, degradation and destruction" from coastal development, pollution, and overfishing. In the South China Sea, competing territorial claims have caused a lack of government oversight in the area, making the situation worse, according to the study. Author Terry Hughes says (quote), "The window of opportunity to recover the reefs of the South China Sea is closing rapidly, given the state of degradation revealed in this study." Many international studies have shown China's people are suffering from some of the heaviest air, water, and land pollution in the world. Posted: 29 Dec 2012 12:53 AM PST

A woman from Oregon found a cry for help from a Chinese labor camp in a box of Halloween decorations. The letter claims to be written from the Masanjia labor camp in northeastern China. The Masanjia labor camp is notorious for its harsh work conditions and the mistreatment of those interned inside. In the plea letter that found its way to the US, the writer specifically mentions the mistreatment of Falun Gong practitioners. Falun Gong is a spiritual discipline. Its adherents are brutally persecuted in China. Pan Qi is a former detainee from Masanjia. She witnessed another Falun Gong practitioner who was forced fed neuroleptic drugs. [Pan Qi, Former Detainee in Masanjia Labor Camp]: "Her eyes stared at me without any recognition. I asked her 'What happened to you?' She didn't look at me. It was like she had no soul. She couldn't recognize me. So I pinched her and said 'look at me. Who am I?'" Shortly after Pan Qi witnessed this, she was force-fed drugs as well. [Pan Qi, Former Detainee in Masanjia Labor Camp]: "When I got to the hospital he (a doctor) asked me 'Have you renounced your beliefs?' I said 'Practicing Falun Gong is good, I have no illness.' He said 'If you have not, you are a mental patient.' ... Several people pushed me onto a bed board. One of them had a spoon with medicine in it. I remember it was a blue capsule, and he put black powder in the spoon. Then he held my nose and put the medicine in my mouth when I couldn't hold my breath any longer." Torture ...

Birth of Jesus Depicted Across Italy

Posted: 29 Dec 2012 12:38 AM PST

During the Christmas holiday, many people around Italy recreate the nativity scene depicting the birth of Jesus. Some use figures, while others use real people for the display. It's a holy tradition for many Italians. [Participant, Nativity Scene]: "It's an important period because on the eve of the holidays we gather together to represent the day of nativity. Throughout Italy many villages and parishes get together to create this event, the living nativity scene." The tradition dates back to the early medieval period when Saint Francis of Assisi is said to have held the first living nativity scene. Many Italians enjoy reconstructing the scene at home, sometimes returning to stores to buy new props enriching their displays year after year. The nativity scene tradition is passed down through the generations. [Mauro Imbrenda, Nativity Scene Creator]: "The nativity scene is a major Italian tradition, perhaps the oldest. It was first started by St. Francis in early 1200, and since then, year after year Italian families have been making a representation of nativity at home. It is already a tradition that passes from parents to children, so that this tradition becomes the most wonderful time of the year." The nativity scene is called a "presepio" in Italian, from the two latin words "prae," in front, and "saepes," hedges. Presepios are usually prepared on December 8 and stay on display until January 6. NTD News, Montegrosso, Italy

Italian Priest Blames Women for Provoking Domestic Violence

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 06:34 PM PST

Italian priest draws ire after posting a message blaming women for provoking domestic violence. Full story: An Italian parish priest from a small village has sparked outrage after suggesting that women shared in the blame for provoking domestic abuse. Priest Piero Corsi posted an article to the bulletin board of his church in the northern seaside village of San Terenzo di Lerici. The article suggested that pornography and erotic television were partly to blame, but also focused on women. Entitled "Women and the Murder of Women: They Should Engage in Healthy Self-Criticism: How Often Do They Provoke?" the priest says that women provoke "the worst instincts, which then turn into violence and sexual abuse." Later it states "the core of the problem is in the fact that women are more and more provocative, they yield to arrogance, they believe they can do everything themselves and they end up exacerbating tensions." This included wearing "provocative and tight clothing." Marco Caluri, the mayor of Lerici, called the article "astonishing and deeply offensive." The bishop of La Spezia ordered it to be taken down, calling it unacceptable in an interview with Tele Liguria Sud. [Luigi Ernesto Palletti, Bishop]: "In the press release I issued I also emphasised that under no circumstances can whatever despicable instance of violence against women be put in correlation with whatever other motivation. I take this occasion to be more and more aware of this unacceptable phenomenon to try ...

[Anisur Rahman, Senior Communist Party of India-Marxist Leader]: "Her attitude is such that if any rape takes place then she shall pay some money to the victim and shut her up.
