Chinese prefer RMB to foreign money - Biz Wire - December 27 - BONTV

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 11:20 PM PST

Go to www.bon.tv to watch the full episode Follow us on Weibo weibo.com or Twitter.com/ChinaBizWire People in China seem to prefer holding yuan to foreign currencies as statistics from the country's foreign exchange authority showed that Chinese individuals and institutions sold more foreign currency than they bought in November. The yuan has strengthened in recent months, causing Chinese clients to have bought the equivalent of about 18.5 billion dollars more of yuan than other currencies. This foreign exchange surplus widened from the $7.8 billion dollars registered in October. Zhao Qingming, a finance expert at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, said that the widening surplus suggests Chinese businesses and individuals are more willing to hold onto the yuan amid expectations for a stronger currency. In China's foreign exchange spot market in November, the yuan touched the top of its daily trading band against the US dollar at some point during 20 of the month's 22 trading days. Xie Yaxuan, a researcher with China Merchants Securities , said November's surplus invalidates some previous estimates of the outflow of "hot money," or speculative capital, after China's outstanding yuan funds for foreign exchange held in domestic financial institutions saw a sharp decline of 12 billion dollars in November. Xie said the reasons for the drop are dependent on other sets of data from the central bank to be released soon.

National broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) has released a documentary on self-immolation in the country's Tibetan-inhabited areas. The documentary, titled "Facts About Self-Immolation in Tibetan Areas of Ngapa (Aba)," discusses self-immolations that have occurred in Aba, a Tibetan and Qiang autonomous prefecture in southwest China's Sichuan Province. The documentary contains interviews with the supposed masterminds and victims of the self-immolations. It claims that monks in Aba were acting on orders sent from overseas to convince people to self-immolate. Victims, however, claim that the acts were a form of protest against Chinese rule in Tibet. The documentary also claims that the Dalai clique masterminded the self-immolations..

11 killed in van crash - Media Watch - December 26 - BONTV

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 09:37 PM PST

ELEVEN children died after a minivan carrying them to kindergarten plunged into a roadside pond in a rural area of eastern China yesterday. Three children died at the scene of the accident in Guixi City in Jiangxi Province and another eight died later in hospital, said an official. Four children survived. The accident is the latest in a string of deadly crashes in China involving school children. Police detained the driver for questioning and were investigating the cause of the accident, Xinhua news agency said. The minivan belonged to Chunlei kindergarten, which doesn't have a government license to operate, according to the website of China Central Television. Its report said that the van was traveling too fast and had swerved to avoid a parked vehicle. Photos on the website showed pairs of tiny shoes and brightly colored schoolbags lined up on the ground near the scene and an injured child being treated. The van was said to have a capacity of seven people but had 17 onboard. A teacher was also on the vehicle at the time. Overcrowding on school buses is common in rural China, where the education system is short of funds and children are forced to travel far to get an education because of school closures. Last year, a nine-seat private school van overloaded with 62 kindergarten children and two adults crashed head-on with a truck in western China, killing 19 children and the adults. The accident caused public uproar and Premier Wen Jiabao pledged more support for school ...

Go to www.bon.tv to watch the full episode Follow us on Weibo weibo.com or Twitter.com/ChinaBizWire Guizhou Moutai Company, China's biggest liquor maker by market value, could struggle under a new Central Military Commission decision, if it's enforced, to ban luxury dinners. Last Friday, the nation's top military authority announced 10 regulations aimed at reducing extravagance and curbing corruption. Among them were bans on liquor and luxury banquets as well as restrictions that prevent senior military officers from staying in luxury hotels while on business trips. Guizhou Maotai, one of the most famous brands of the Chinese liquor baijiu, could bear the brunt of the new regulations. This is part of the new leadership's efforts to trim officers' extravagant spending on banquets and inspection tours. State run news outlet Xinhua reported that the Beijing municipal government also banned banquets for civilian officials on fact-finding trips in the capital city, and said it will offer buffets instead. Stating the obvious was Zhang Yanlin, research director for China Investment Consulting, who said after losing a large source of consumption the official banquets high-end baijiu will not do as well as before. Long Fei, an industrial analyst from Guosen Securities, said he believes that the new leadership has shown its commitment to having practical and down-to-earth work methods. The decision about luxury dinners is the second blow to fall on makers of Chinese baijiu after ...
