In a shocking incidence of violence in India, an angry mob charred to death a tea estate owner and his wife on Wednesday. Full Story: In a shocking incidence of violence on Wednesday (December 26), an angry mob in India charred to death a tea estate owner and his wife. Around 200 tea plantation workers attacked the couple with sharp implements and set their residence on fire. Police say, the victims' bodies have been burned and cannot be recognized. Media reports say, over the past two months, differences had surfaced between the tea garden management and the laborers, and salaries were suspended. There were also reports of the owner attempting to molest a girl working in the gardens. Due to poverty, both men and women in the area are forced to work on the tea estates for a living. Recent legislation on labor laws have done little to improve working conditions for the tea garden workers. They make only the equivalent of one US dollar and 71 cents (90 rupees) after the government increased their pay this year. Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com "Xinhua News Agency", the state-controlled station of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), published feature articles about seven members of the Politburo Standing Committee, in order to disclose their work, life and family. CCP experts interpreted this as a strong signal of reform, which took officials' property as a preliminary exploration. However, critics said that these feature articles were only singing praise, and had nothing to do with officials' declaring property or political reform. From December 23 to 25, 2012, "Xinhua News Agency" published feature articles on the seven member Politburo Standing Committee of the CCP. These articles disclosed their life experiences, policy philosophies, styles of work, and even family circumstances and personal hobbies. Li Yuanhua, professor of Chinese history, pointed out that the articles were from the publicity department. Their aim is to mould the appearance step by step into that of ordinary people. It is to try and show that the new leaders of the CCP are different from former leaders. Li Yuanhua: "In a free society or normal society, family members are openly seen. During an election, the family members have to work together to pull votes. You cannot wait until you have taken position, and then let people know who your family are." World's Longest High Speed Rail Line Unveiled in China

Posted: 26 Dec 2012 04:57 PM PST

China has unveiled the world's longest high speed railway line. The line runs from Beijing to Guangzhou and spans over 1400 miles. Train service began on Wednesday, and marks the latest in the Chinese regime's push to develop its high speed rail network. With a travel speed of 186 miles per hour, the connection between the two cities is now cut down to about eight hours. In comparison, an older train on a parallel line takes 24 hours to make the trip. State-run media reported a low-cost ticket on the new train will cost travelers $139 USD. But more expensive tickets range up to more than $400. China's high speed rail has hit several bumps in recent years. A deadly collision in July 2011 sparked concerns over the safety and management of the system. The network is also costly to build. The New York Times reported the Railway Ministry has run up a debt of $640 billion to finance the construction of high speed rail trains. And the network is not being utilized enough to turn a profit. The high speed rail expansion has also been embroiled in corruption. Former Railway Minister, Liu Zhijun, was arrested in February 2011 for receiving bribes—on the order of $250 million. Still, Chinese authorities plan to continue building the high speed rail network. Planned routes would run as far as Russia and Southeast Asia. For more news and videos visit ☛ ntd.tv Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me

US Trade Representative Harsh on China in 2012 Report

Posted: 26 Dec 2012 04:52 PM PST

The office of the US Trade Representative Ron Kirk released his 2012 report to Congress on China's compliance with World Trade Organization trade rules. At times strongly worded, the report focuses on China's compliance with WTO regulations. The US has been China's biggest critic at the WTO. According to the report, in the eleven years China has been a WTO member, the US has filed more complaints against the Chinese authorities than any other member. The USTR writes that in 2012 : "The United States brought three important new WTO cases against China, while continuing to prosecute five other cases." The latest of these cases targets state subsidies in China's auto industry, and import duties on US vehicles. From a more long-term perspective, the USTR report centers on China's commitment to the WTO, noting that China is still not following regulations. When China joined the WTO in 2001, China's leadership committed to full compliance by 2006. International observers note that the general tone of US complaints have changed. Complaints now focus on Chinese subsidies that supposedly advantage state-owned businesses and services. Issues such as intellectual property rights and transparency have also taken priority. So what's in store from the USTR in 2013? The US promises bilateral dialogue but also that "when dialogue is not successful in resolving WTO-related concerns, the United States will not hesitate to invoke the dispute settlement mechanism at the WTO where appropriate ...

Former Masanjia Detainees Corroborate Forced Labor Plea Letter

Posted: 26 Dec 2012 04:49 PM PST

It's a modern-day version of a message in a bottle. From a Chinese labor camp to the home of a US resident. On Sunday, the Oregon-based Oregonian newspaper reported a letter resident Julie Keith discovered inside a box of Halloween decorations. She bought it from Kmart in October. The box came from China—and according to the letter—it wasn't from a factory. Instead, the decorations were made here, at the Masanjia Labor Camp in Shenyang, Liaoning province. The letter claims detainees work 15-hour days and are paid less than $2 USD a month for forced labor. It says thousands are held there, and that many are persecuted Falun Gong practitioners. Former detainees at Masanjia have corroborated the claims in the letter. [Dai Liguo, Formerly Detained Falun Gong Practitioner] "I was sent to Masanjia in 1999 and persecuted there. They produce handmade crafts for export. Most are plastic and are toxic. I was making Christmas decorations, and also knitted sweaters. I had to work from 5 in the morning to 11 at night." [Guo Yujun, Formerly Detained Falun Gong Practitioner] "Aside from toilet breaks, we had to sit for the whole day, and make those products. There wasn't a day off, and we weren't fed properly. In our case, there was no pay for our work." China's labor re-education system is notorious for rights abuses. The system is used heavily in the Communist regime's persecution of the Falun Gong spiritual practice. In 2008, the US State Department estimated up to half of the 200000 ...

China's New Leader Xi Jinping Promotes "Multi-Party" Cooperation

Posted: 26 Dec 2012 04:46 PM PST

China is ruled by the authoritarian Communist Party. But that doesn't mean there are no other political parties in the country—at least in name. State-run Xinhua News Agency reported on Wednesday that new Chinese leader Xi Jinping has met with the new chiefs of China's eight non-Communist political Parties. Among them are groups like the China Democratic League, and the Chinese Peasants' and Workers' Democratic Party. But all of these state-sanctioned groups are still controlled by the United Front Work Department. It's one of the organizations under the Communist Party's Central Committee. This effectively means these other Parties have no independence. [Wu Fan, Chief Editor of China Affairs] "This multi-party cooperation is false. It's really just a dictatorship...The leaders in these so-called political parties are either secret Communist Party members, or sent there by the Communist Party. They are funded by the Communist Party, and must follow its lead." Xinhua claims the eight Parties had more than 800000 members at the end of 2011. Xi reportedly listened to their suggestions on, quote "major issues"—like improving working styles and moving China's economic transformation. Above all, Xi Jinping says the Communist Party will improve multi-party cooperation and the Communist Party's political consultation system. [Liu Guohua, Political Commentator] "The Communist Party has always talked about this throughout its history. But it means different things at different ...

Doubts Over Xinhua's Featured Articles

Posted: 26 Dec 2012 07:14 PM PST

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) state-owned Xinhua News Agency recently published a series of feature articles. The Articles introduced seven members of the Standing Committee. On December 26, the World Journal website issued an article. It stated that the seven feature articles all have errors in it, and it got into trouble instead. For example, when the Wenzhou train accident happened, Zhang Dejiang instructed clearly not to bury the wreckage of the train. Many people then asked who has buried them? Who dared to go against Vice Premier's order? Should it be investigated? In one feature article, the story was about Li Keqiang caring about AIDs patients in Henan. It said that Li has invited Gao Yaojie to his office, but many people doubted it. Yet later, who has forced Gao Yaojie to leave China and escaping abroad? In addition, Xinhua's articles have publicized Xi and Li's family members and their names. Strangely, in the article about Zhang Gaoli, there is not a single word about his wife and children having been mentioned. Radio France Internationale reported that those of Zhang's family whom the CCP has omitted were actually almost all known in Hong Kong. The husband of Zhang's daughter, Lee Shing-put is the son of Lee Yin-yee. Lee Yin-yee is a member of the Hong Kong committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and chairman of a listed company, Xinyi Group. Li Shing-put is ...
