Battles Rage Across Syria

Battles rage across Syria as rebels fire at tanks in Damascus and citizens scramble in aftermath of air attack in Hama. Rebels take aim at a government tank in Damascus. But no one is giving up the fight in Syria's Capital as government forces return fire. Across the country the fight rages on. Amateur video which could not be independently verified by Reuters shows rebel forces taking up arms in Idlib province. In Hama both sides are fighting to the finish. A woman screams in anguish. People scramble on streets of despair. Efforts to forge peace have stalled over rebel demands to exclude President Bashar al-Assad from any transitional government. Rebels Dismiss Calls for Peace Talks

On the bomb ravaged streets of Aleppo rebel forces say they will decide the future of the conflict in Syria. Peace envoy Lakdar Brahimi said that Syria will face hell if no deal is struck to end 21 months of bloodshed. (Mohamed Atton, FSA Commander): "What we heard from Lakhdar Brahimi has nothing to do with us. Those who negotiate and speak to him don't represent us. We're the ones on the ground fighting so we have the final decision." They pray for a better future. And they take up positions where they can. Short of arms, the are using the governments own weapons against Bashar al-Assad's forces. (Free Syrian Army Rocket Maker): "When Assad's airplanes drop bombs, we take them and remake them into a regular rocket and then we fire it at the regime. Because we are short on ammunition and no one supporting us, we use their rockets against themselves." In a rebel held town in Aleppo province residents sort through the damage from an airstrike. Four children are among the dead A man says his relatives are all in the hospital -- he has nothing left and no place to go. People try to find what they have lost. Some 45000 people have died in a war that began as a popular uprising in March 2011. There there are still no signs of peace. At Least Four Killed in Russian Plane Crash

At least four people are killed when a Russian airliner crashes onto a highway outside Moscow. Eight crew members were on board when the plane broke into pieces after it slid off the runway. Witnesses told state TV they saw a man thrown from the plane as it rammed into the barrier of the highway. (Colonel Yuri Besedin, Russian Emergencies Ministry): "Upon landing an engine failed - or according to other reports, there was a fire in the engine. The plane overshot a runway and was destroyed." The crash came during peak holiday travel ahead of Russia's New Year's vacation. Russian investigators say preliminary findings point to pilot error. The crash cast a spotlight on the country's poor air-safety record despite President Vladimir Putin's calls to improve controls. The pilot, co-pilot, flight engineer and a flight attendant were killed in the crash. The four other crew members are in a serious condition in the hospital. Berlusconi's Divorce Costs $132000 a Day

Silvio Berlusconi in happier times with his wife Veronica Lario. Now after three years of negotiations he's agreed to pay his estranged wife 100000 euros a day -- that's more than 132000 dollars, according to Italian newspaper accounts. The marriage lasted for more than 22 years. In 2009 Lario filed for divorce-- accusing the 76-year-old billionaire of having an affair with a 17-year-old girl. Reports say that the settlement, will assign no blame to either party. It also said Lario will not get the 78-million-euro villa where she raised their three children. Berlusconi has been dogged by repeated allegations of sexual scandals, with accounts of lavish sex parties in his Milan home. He has denied charges of paying for sex with a juvenile prostitute. The settlement comes just after Berlusconi's return to frontline politics -- to lead a center-right campaign ahead of February elections. Anti Rape Protesters Pray for Gang Rape Victim

In New Delhi, a Hindu fire ritual or 'havan' is held to honour the victim of a gang rape. The 23-year-old medical student died from the severity of her injuries at a hospital in Singapore on Saturday. A priest officiating the ceremony said the ritual is to pray for the departed, and for better protection for Indian women. The brutal rape on board a bus sparked massive and sometimes violent protests across the country. The government was forced to at least verbally acknowledge the problem of rape and violence against women in India. The parents of the victim accompanied her body as it arrived home.
