Nippon Foundation Donates Biggest Aid Package to Burma

Posted: 22 Dec 2012 08:32 AM PST

Japan's Nippon Foundation donated $3 million USD worth of emergency and relief supplies on Saturday (December 22) to displaced Burmese residents living in regions controlled by the armed forces of ethnic groups in Burma. Part of the donation, $70000 USD, will go to the New Mon State Party. The money pays for 50 tons of rice, medical supplies for hospitals and 500 boxes of emergency kits. The majority of supplies will go to groups near the Thai-Burma border. According to the Nippon Foundation, this is the largest aid package the Burma Central Government has ever approved. [Yohei Sasakawa, Chairman, The Nippon Foundation]: "We, Japanese like the Burmese people very much because when Japan was in need of help after World War II, the Japanese people were helped by Burmese rice. I myself ate that rice at the time. So it is natural and I feel it's a duty for the Japanese people to support the Burmese people now." While the amount given has been unprecedented, Mon State officials say it's only the beginning of what's needed for the people suffering at the border. [Nai Htaw, Chairman of The New Mon State Party]: "This is the very first step. This is not a big amount. If we distribute what we get, it can support them in some way." While part of the donation will go to villages in Mon State, including Tarana Village just outside the downtown area, residents there don't expect to see much of the relief supplies, if any. [Nai Zaw Min, Villager]: "I don't think we will get a donation ...

CGT Union Denies Mass Looting Role in Argentina

Posted: 22 Dec 2012 07:05 AM PST

Union leader denies government allegations of involvement in looting that has claimed at least two lives in Argentina. Full Story: A spate of looting across Argentina has claimed two lives. The trouble erupted on Thursday and spread quickly across the country into Friday. Several hundred people have been arrested. The government says the attacks are not random. [Juan Manuel Abal Medina, Cabinet Chief]: "They're isolated incidents, clearly planned and organised. We don't see anyone taking food. They're taking LCD televisions and alcohol. These acts must be condemned and a clear signal sent out so everyone knows that nothing will be achieved by these means in Argentina." But Hugo Moyano of the CGT union says the government is hinting that opposition unions are masterminding the chaos, which he denies. [Hugo Moyano, CGT Secretary General]: "I think the president is out of step, the problems have overwhelmed the government and she is unable to see the reality. She doesn't respond to any legitimate demands. Instead she sends out these people to say idiotic things. How is it possible for a government to act like it's serious when it has people who go around saying anything at all." The unrest is more bad news for President Cristina Fernandez. She often contrasts the nation's current economic stability with a crisis in 2001 that saw a wave of looting as millions were plunged into poverty. Italian Prime Minister Quits

Posted: 22 Dec 2012 05:46 AM PST

Italy's Prime Minister Mario Monti resigns but keeps his next move close to his chest. Full Story: A convoy of cars carrying Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti arrives at the presidential palace in Rome. A short while later presidential officials announce Monti's resigned. [Donato Marra, Secretary General, Italy]: "The President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, received today at the presidential palace at 1900 the prime minister, Senator Mario Monti, who, following parliament's approval of the budget law, has tendered his resignation from the government he presided over." Monti revealed his intention to resign at a conference of Italian ambassadors in Rome on Friday. His announcement came as Italy's lower house approved his government's 2013 budget. He's continuing in a caretaker capacity until a highly uncertain national election in February. Monti was appointed to lead an unelected government to save Italy from a financial crisis a year ago. He's kept his next move a closely guarded secret pending a news conference on Sunday where he's expected to clarify his intentions.
