Foreign ministers meet over dispute - Biz Wire September 26 - BONTV

Posted: 26 Sep 2012 06:24 PM PDT

Go to www.bon.tv to watch the full episode Follow us on Weibo weibo.com Japan's deputy foreign minister arrived in Beijing after weeks of tension over the disputed East China Sea. China's ministry spokesman Hong Lei says the visit came at the request of the Japanese. But China will keep its position and demand to have the island returned, in order to improve relations. Earlier this month, the Japanese government purchased three of the islands from a private owner, setting off mass protests. As a result, China canceled celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of Japan's normalization. The exchange of the currencies between the two countries has since had a set back. Last week, investors released large amounts of yen and government bonds, leading to sharp falls in the yen against the US dollar. But Analysts believe, there is a chance for China to sell Japanese government bonds. Japan's latest trade initial data shows that exports and imports both fell in August, while trade deficit expanded in July. Exports also decreased to 5.8%, for a 3 month straight decline.

China, the US, and the WTO - Media Watch September 19 - BONTV

Posted: 26 Sep 2012 01:06 AM PDT

Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode CHINA filed a World Trade Organization case yesterday challenging US anti-dumping measures on billions of dollars of kitchen appliances, paper and other goods. China's move came before the Obama administration filed its own WTO case accusing China of improperly subsidizing exports of automobiles and auto parts. China and the US have clashed over complaints about market barriers and subsidies for goods including vehicles, solar panels, tires, steel and chicken. Political pressures on both sides are worsening as demand for their goods cools, raising the threat of job losses in export industries. As campaigning for the US presidency intensifies ahead of a November vote, US President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney have traded barbs on China, accusing each other of backing policies that would move American jobs overseas. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said its latest WTO complaint centers on the US Congress's passage of a law this year that retroactively gave the Commerce Department power to impose anti-dumping duties on Chinese goods. That came after a US court reversed earlier duties imposed under rules covering countries such as China and Vietnam that are deemed to be "non-market economies." "This practice puts Chinese enterprises in an uncertain legal environment, in violation of the relevant rules of the WTO transparency and due process," said ministry spokesman Shen Danyang in a statement. The Chinese filing ...

Posted: 26 Sep 2012 12:30 AM PDT

Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode Some time ago, in a notorious incident, a photo appeared of local officials in Huili county, Sichuan province, purportedly inspecting a newly completed highway. However so badly was the image photoshopped that the three appeared to hover several inches above the ground, much to the hilarity of Chinese net users. Now recently it seems more officials in Sichuan -- this time Leshan city - have been proving the camera doesn't ALWAYS tell the truth. This time a garden spray was used to simulate rain and show that even in bad weather the hardworking officials were out about their business. In both cases the local government came out with explanations of varying degrees of farfetchedness.

Ikea opened its first China operation in Shanghai in 1998. But over the following decade it saw moderate growth throughout the country, opening a total of 11 outlets over 14 years. The initially slow sales were partly due to a policy of pricing all goods according to Ikea's international prices. This meant that for it's first 5 years, Ikea was essentially a white-collar outlet for those with a taste in foreign design.
