Aircraft Carrier 'Liaoning' Enters its "Political" Service

Posted: 26 Sep 2012 08:43 PM PDT

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com Former Soviet Union 'Varyag' aircraft carrier was renamed to 'Liaoning on September 25, after being refitted by the Chinese Communist Party' (CCP) navy. Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao attended the ceremony of its official commissioning held in Dalian. The news has provoked concerns in neighboring countries. Analysts say, the significance of the carrier and the time of its entering into service is more political than military. Before its formal delivery, the aircraft carrier 'Liaoning' had allegedly undergone 10 times sea trials. The carrier was reportedly far from operational readiness with extensive further trials and exercises still required. Critic Lan Shu says, it takes at least 5-10 years to have an ocean-ready fleet with self-contained logistics system. Lan Shu: "Probably it will not be until 2020 before it could form a real combat capability. Things like training, logistical support, coordination among different departments and technologies meshing, will take a long time to get ready. The CCP has no previous experience in operating aircraft carriers. And it won't be offered help by the world, I think." Now domestically, the CCP faces political reorganization and the tangled political scandal of Bo Xilai. Internationally, the regime is mired in the territorial disputes over the Diaoyu Islands and the South China Sea. The public held view that the timing for the aircraft carrier to enter service has ...

China Focus - Riots at iPhone Plant and "Subconscious Shooting"

Posted: 26 Sep 2012 03:32 PM PDT

There have been two high-profile incidents of civil unrest in the past week. One you've probably heard about: 2000 factory workers at a Foxconn factory in Taiyuan that makes iPhones rioted on Sunday, shutting down the plant for a day. The other is getting little attention from the Western press, but it's being discussed prominently on Chinese microblogs. It's even led to a new internet meme: "subconscious shooting." A police officer in Liaoning province opened fire on a man and his elderly parents, killing the son, over a land eviction conflict. What do these two incidents have in common? And what can we learn from them about recent changes in how Chinese people view their government?

Mysterious White Foam Covers Scotland Village

Posted: 26 Sep 2012 03:24 PM PDT

Storms battered Scotland yesterday, causing many disruptions, but the most interesting of its affects may have been in Aberdeen. Strong winds whipped up a foam from the North Sea, and gales blew the foam into the village, covering it like a blanket of snow. A marine ecologist told the BBC, the foam is a result of waves mixing air, water, and organic material from phytoplankton. (fight-o-plank-ton) Elsewhere in Scotland, trees were knocked down by the strong winds, with many roads flooded, and some schools closed. China Stocks Drop to Almost 4-Year Low

Posted: 26 Sep 2012 02:19 PM PDT

China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index has fallen to its lowest point since 2009 today, as the economy continues to head towards troubled waters. The index dropped 1.2%, closing at 2004.2 points. It dived briefly below the 2000 point key support level, hitting its lowest mark in almost 4 years during the last 5 minutes before trading closed today. The drop is the latest in a continued decline for China's stock market this year. The Shanghai Composite Index has fallen by 9% so far. Analysts say the low may further depress sentiments, leading to more selling by worried investors. China's export-dependent economy has been left reeling amidst a global economic slowdown. Retail sales and manufacturing have seen a gradual decline since the last quarter, with economists downgrading overall growth forecasts for the year. Keeping the economy afloat will be a major challenge for Chinese leaders, as they negotiate a difficult power transition in October. Anti-Japanese Riots Hurt Japanese Automakers in China

Posted: 26 Sep 2012 02:03 PM PDT

Japanese automakers are scaling back production in China after several weeks of violent anti-Japanese riots in the country. Mobs specifically set their sights on destroying Japanese goods, in particular, cars. Auto analyst at Advanced Research Japan Koji Endo told the New York Times, quote, "For the time being, I think you're going to see Japanese automakers' sales in China down by 20 to 30 percent." Toyota and Nissan in particular have been hard hit. Nissan is scaling back production by 8.9%. Toyota has dropped its Chinese production by 18%. Honda lowered outputs by 10%. Carmakers say the impact of the anti-Japanese riots have not come through fully in August. They expect September figures to give a clearer picture. September through October tends to be big months for auto sales and Japanese manufacturers will likely be seeing their market share dwindle as US and European automakers fill the gap. According to estimates by China's Passenger Car Association, it will be the first time since 2005 that Japanese carmakers will lose their lead to the Germans. Tibetans Gather in Dharmsala for Special General Meeting

Posted: 26 Sep 2012 01:55 PM PDT

About 400 Tibetans from around the world met in Dharmsala in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday for a four-day meeting. The meeting was called to emphasize the plight of Tibetans under Chinese rule. Tibet's Prime Minister-in-exile of the Central Tibetan Administration, Lobsang Sangay, says they don't expect much of the new Chinese regime but hope for the best. [Lobsang Sangay, Tibet's Prime Minister-In-Exile]: "On the one hand, even after 50 of years of experience, we are not that optimistic because the Chinese government has continued to maintain hard-line policies on Tibet, except for a brief period in the early 80's being good. But as human beings one should remain hopeful and with a new personnel hopefully there will be new perspective and polices on Tibet as well." Few people know what Xi, the expected new leader of the Chinese Communist Party, thinks of Tibet or the Dalai Lama. But his late father, Xi Zhongxun, had a close bond with the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, who presented the elder Xi with an expensive watch in the 1950s. Xi, a senior party official, was still wearing that watch decades later. Some are hopeful that Xi junior, China's next leader, may also show a soft spot for the Dalai Lama when he succeeds President Hu Jintao next March. Sangay says their focus this year is to find new ways of getting global support for their cause. [Lobsang Sangay, Tibet's Prime Minister-In-Exile]: "We have called this year the 'Tibet ...

Falun Gong Organ Harvesting Takes Center Stage at US Congress and UN

Posted: 26 Sep 2012 01:41 PM PDT

The United Nation's 21st Session of the Human Rights Council is underway through Friday, and China has been coming up repeatedly. In particular, the trials of former Chongqing Party chief Bo Xilai, his wife Gu Kailai, and their right hand man, police chief Wang Lijun, have been of particular concern. These three have long participated in the persecution of the Falun Gong meditation practice and were directly involved in the live organ harvesting of Falun Gong adherents. On September 18, Epoch Times editor-in-chief Guo Jun and Dr Karen Parker, chief representative of International Educational Development, spoke at the General Assembly of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. They exposed the Chinese regime's live organ harvesting program to more than 100 country delegates and non-governmental organizations. They demanded an investigation into these crimes. The subject quickly became a hot topic among delegates. [Guo Jun, Editor-in-Chief, The Epoch Times]: "This is the first time the organ harvesting of Falun Gong practitioners has been discussed on a formal UN platform. Many representatives were happy that it could be exposed during the 21st Session of the Human Rights Council. Everyone is talking about it. Some representatives who did not attend the meeting read my speech online and watched the video." Guo Jun says that many representatives want to bring this grotesque practice of organ harvesting to an end. [Guo Jun, Editor-in-Chief, The Epoch Times]: "Representatives ...

Bo Xilai Implicated in Multibillion Dollar Corruption Scandal: Deutsche Welle

Posted: 26 Sep 2012 01:34 PM PDT

An investigation into disgraced Chinese politician Bo Xilai has uncovered serious disciplinary violations, and corruption in the order of 100 million yuan—that's according to German media Deutsche Welle. It said on Tuesday this information came from sources inside Liaoning, where Bo was provincial governor during the 1990s. Bo has not been heard from since March, after he was sacked as Chongqing's Party Secretary. In April, Chinese authorities announced they were investigating Bo for disciplinary violations, and removed him from his Politburo position. Bo's latest official mention came this month after the trial of his former police chief Wang Lijun. State-run Xinhua News Agency cryptically referred to Bo as the "leader of Chongqing," who slapped Wang in January, after he brought up Bo's wife Gu Kailai's murder of British businessman Neil Heywood. Analysts read that as the Communist Party leadership readying itself to make the final move against Bo. NTD's China analyst Zhao Pei says the latest leaked information to Deutsche Welle indicates that Bo may be dealt with much more harshly than Wang Lijun. Wang was given a combined sentence of 15 years imprisonment for charges of defection, abuse of power, covering-up Heywood's murder and taking 3.5 million yuan in bribes. [Zhao Pei, NTD China Analyst] "This information is an internal leak from within the Communist Party, that they will use corruption to give Bo a heavy sentence. Wang was given a nine-year sentence for about 3.5 ...

China Squeezes InternetFreedom: Freedom House

Posted: 26 Sep 2012 01:23 PM PDT

Freedom House published its 2012 report on Internet Freedom for 47 countries across the globe. Freedom House reports that Internet censorship is on the rise in 14 of those countries, including China, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and Uzbekistan. China is ranked among the worst in the world and worst in Asia, actually declining from last year. The report states, "China has exerted a greater influence in the online world, emerging as an incubator for sophisticated new types of Internet restrictions. The Chinese method for controlling social-media content...has become a particularly potent model for other authoritarian countries." The criterion was based on obstacles to Internet access, frequency of censored content, and violations of users rights. China ranked third in that category, beat only by Cuba and Iran. Foxconn Still Attractive to Younger Workers, Despite Concerns

Posted: 26 Sep 2012 11:11 AM PDT

Buses of young people showed up at Foxconn's gate on Wednesday, and they are not here to protest. These young recruits are hoping to fill spaces on Foxconn's assembly line. Although the Taiwanese owned electronics giant has come under scrutiny for poor working conditions, applicants say it's still better than the alternatives. [Li Jiang, 20-yeal old Going for Interview at Foxconn]: "People are often worried about things like not getting paid wages, and not getting good work conditions. Wages here in Taiyuan aren't usually very high, around 1500 yuan [a month] (240 US dollars), not very high. But here the lowest wage is better than that." This week, the Taiyuan factory was shut down for one day after an overnight riot, believed to have been started after a fight between a worker and a security guard. When asked if this was a worry, Li Jiang says it's not a big concern. [Li Jiang, 20-yeal old Going for Interview at Foxconn]: "I'm not worried about that aspect because the security here is pretty good. And I've heard that if something like that happens here, people get fired. We're really not worried about that sort of thing." Foxconn is the biggest supplier of Apple Inc.'s products. Ahead of Apple's new iPhone 5 release, Foxconn was criticized for using interns as regular workers, and forcing them to do overtime. 40 Tasmanian Devil Babies Born in South Wales

Posted: 26 Sep 2012 10:01 AM PDT

The birth of 40 Tasmanian devils at an Australian breeding facility this year boosts the population of the endangered species, afflicted by a contagious disease. Full Story: An Australian breeding facility in New South Wales became host to forty baby Tasmanian devils this year, an important step for the endangered species. Located in Barrington Tops, the Devil Ark facility is far from the animals' native home of Tasmania, but it has a similar climate to the island state. The facility's efforts are especially important, as the marsupial is threatened by Devil Facial Tumour Disease, or DTFD. [Andrew Pottage, Keeper]: "The wild population is being infected by a contagious cancer. It's dropped from a quarter of a million to 25000. With figures like that an extinction seems inevitable." DTFD is highly contagious, and contracting it is deadly; most which do die within six months. As well as affecting vital organs, the disease causes the growth of large tumors that impedes feeding, often resulting in starvation. It is the facility's second breeding season, and its efforts have been more successful this time round. Last year, there were only 26 births. The Tasmanian devils live in free-range enclosures, as keepers try to minimize human contact. After DTFD runs its course, the newborn devils will be released into the wild.
