Chen Guangbiao Swaps New for Old - China Take September 21 - BONTV

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 08:59 PM PDT

Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode Chinese philanthropist and recycling tycoon, Chen Guangbiao, has managed to get his face in the news again. Just weeks ago Chen placed a half-page advertisement in the New York Times stating that uninhabited islands disputed by China and Japan had been Chinese territory since antiquity - and rather bizarrely comparing them to Hawaii. And Chen is now offering compensation to the owners of Japanese cars destroyed by extreme Chinese nationalists during recent anti-Japanese protests. Chen announced that he would buy a replacement car for his microblog followers who could get official verification that their cars had been trashed by demonstrators. However the new car would have to be a Chinese-made brand, although Chen hasn't specified any specific models yet.

If GDP grows, income gap to widen - Biz Wire September 21 - BONTV

Go to www.bon.tv to watch the full episode Follow us on Weibo weibo.com A Chinese scholar says the country's per capita income will reach half of the United States in 18 years. As long as the economy continues to maintain an annual growth rate of 8%. Lin Yifu is the World Bank Vice President and Honorary President of the national development and Research Institute of Peking University. He says that if China continues to open its market, the economy will grow at its potential 8%. After more than 30 years of reform, the country's average annual growth rate has increase by 9.9% and GDP by 16.3%. But sometimes growth comes at a cost; take for example, the widening income gap. As companies owned by the government monopolize the sectors, wealth becomes concentrated in large corporations. Especially in telecommunications, electricity, and finance sectors which are all state-owned. With extensive capital to support their position versus private companies, rising disparities can be seen.

Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode China on Thursday urged Japan to return to the path of dialogue and negotiation to solve bilateral territorial issues as Tokyo planned to send a special envoy to China to ease tensions after its "purchase" of the Diaoyu Islands. Hong Lei, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made his remarks at a daily news conference in response to a report saying Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda was seeking to repair bilateral ties after misjudging China's reaction to Tokyo's "purchase". China has always insisted that issues concerning the Diaoyu Islands should be solved through dialogue and negotiation, Hong said, adding that the Japanese side should take China's solemn demand seriously. Noda said he was considering sending an envoy to Beijing to explain why Japan "purchased" parts of the islands on Sept 10, Japan's TV Asahin reported on Wednesday. No further details about the envoy are available at this time. Japan's Fuji TV reported that two Chinese frigates were spotted 80 km northwest of the islands. If true, this is the first time Chinese warships have entered the waters near the islands, but Beijing has not confirmed the report. Noda said he realized that anti-Japanese rallies might take place in China after Tokyo took state control of the islands, but not to this extent. "I took into account that 'nationalization' would lead to some degree of reaction and friction, but the scale was beyond the expected," he said. Besides ...

Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode The Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the China-Japan Friendship Association announced Sunday they were postponing a ceremony marking the 40th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic ties with Japan. On Friday night, a number of Japanese policemen landed on the Diaoyu Islands, which China has condemned. The Diaoyu Islands dispute is escalating. The current situation has robbed the ceremony of its original meaning. A change in the strategic relationship between the two has been brewing, and the Diaoyu crisis could be the final nail in the coffin for friendly ties between the two since the 1970s. Japan has been calling on both sides to show restraint over the issue while escalating it itself. The administration of Yoshihiko Noda wants China to accept what Japan has done and give up its sovereignty claim, which is nothing but an illusion. It seems that there's no space for China to reason with Japan over the issue, which may end with a confrontation between the two. National strength will eventually solve the issue. China sent law enforcement ships to the Diaoyu Islands last week. Such an act should become routine. The range for law enforcement should be extended to waters 12 nautical miles off the islands, thus realizing the legal status of Chinese police. Solving the dispute through peaceful means should be China's first choice. But it should be prepared for severe friction. It may lead to ...

Looking for Chinese investment - Media Watch September 23 - BONTV

A growing number of overseas real estate projects are trying to attract Chinese investors, as global economic woes soften their own domestic real estate markets. A record 147 overseas projects from more than 30 countries and regions are attending the 2012 Beijing International Property Autumn Expo, according to statistics from the expo's sponsor. "China's housing market has great appeal to foreign projects, and we have had to extend the exhibition hall for foreign projects since we have so many of them," said Wei Kefei, director of the expo's international department. The expo, which runs from Thursday to Sunday and has also attracted around 180 domestic real estate projects, is regarded as a barometer of the market. According to Wei, immigration, education and asset relocation are the top three reasons for Chinese buying properties overseas. Occupying 32 booths at the expo, Cyprus is the most prominent foreign exhibitor at the event. As Canada, Australia and the United States have all increased their immigration requirements, more Chinese people are turning their attention toward Cyprus for permanent residence. If a Chinese investor purchases a property valued 300000 euros ($398000) in Cyprus, they could receive the right to permanent residence in the country within two months. Usually, it takes three to six months to finish the procedure. "As a member of the European Union, the terms offered by Cyprus are quite attractive for us, when considering education and traveling ...

Waiting for "Big 18" - China Take September 24 - BONTV

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 11:35 PM PDT

Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode Chinese media have been talking about the "upcoming" 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China for some time now. Known more popularly as the Shiba Da - literally "Big 18" -- this is something like a Democratic or Republican convention -- with the difference that it only takes place every five years. The conference normally takes place in October in the Great Hall of the People in central Beijing. Every ten years the conference assumes even more importance as it involves a handover of power from one generation of leaders to the next. This year will see the familiar faces of President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao handing on their respective batons. During the week and a half long meeting, 2270 delegates will choose the next Central Committee; decide and approve promotions within the party; and review -- and possible amend - the Party Constitution. However, this year there is so far no word of exactly WHEN this meeting - which will decide the path the party takes over the next decade - is actually going to take place.
