Police Reinforcements Arrive to Combat Crime in Mexico City

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 05:12 PM PDT

Security and police reinforcements arrive on the outskirts of Mexico City, in the city of Nezahualcoyotl. They battle against drug-related violence, which is starting to affect the sprawling capital. Full story: Mexico has sent police and security reinforcements to patrol a suburb of Mexico City for the first time. This is to combat a rise in drug-related violence that is beginning to affect the capital. From late Wednesday (September 19), a combined force of around 1000 soldiers, federal police and local police took to the streets of Nezahualcoyotl on Mexico City's eastern flank. This area has suffered from a dispute between two rival drug cartels. President Felipe Calderon's fight against drug gangs has overshadowed his administration. The arrangement in Nezahualcoyotl brings the conflict into the home state of his successor, Enrique Pena Nieto, who will take office in December. Local resident Gerardo welcomed the presence of police reinforcements and soldiers. [Gerardo, Resident of Nezahualcoyotl]: "It was time that they did it. There is too much insecurity. We aren't safe in our own home or in our cars. It was fair to do this and now we will see if it really is a solution or will make it worse as we have seen in a large part of the country." The local government's request for troops follows a murder which occurred last weekend, of Jaime Serrano, a local state congressman and member of Pena Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Ancient Mosasaur Skeleton Discovered in the Netherlands

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 05:05 PM PDT

Scientists find 13-metre long fossil of a pre-historic reptile - called the Mosasaurus - in a Netherlands quarry. Full story: A Mosasaur skeleton has been discovered in a limestone quarry in the Netherlands. Mosasaurs are extinct marine reptiles that lived at the time of dinosaurs, just over 65 million years ago. This area was once covered by a shallow tropical sea where the Mosasaur lived. The fossil was first discovered by an excavator at the quarry, who suddenly saw the giant teeth in the shovel of his digger. After the discovery, the owner of the quarry halted all digging operations, and informed the local Natural History Museum of the find. Palaeontologist Anne Schulp describes what he found in the remains. [Anne Schulp, Paleontologist at Maastricht Natural History Museum]: "We see all the bones here scattered around and it is not like one complete skeleton, all the bones are over a very wide area and that is because the dead animal, the carcass ended up at the sea floor and then scavenging sharks came in, ripped the carcass apart and we have got the bones and all the little bits and pieces pretty much everywhere so it is a bit of a jungle." Schulp estimates that when put together, the entire skeleton is over 14 yards long. The uncovered parts have been brought to the museum where experts carefully keep the remains in the basement to preserve them. Corrien Derksen, Manager of Natural History Museum Maastricht]: "The bones are very vulnerable and the clay is very ...

iPhone Lovers in Hong Kong Line Up for iPhone 5

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 02:32 PM PDT

iPhone enthusiasts queued up this morning in Hong Kong as Apple releases the new iPhone 5. Due to the sheer number of iPhone fans, only those who had preordered were allowed in. Still, hundreds of iPhone buyers waited outside in the morning chill for the Apple store to open its doors. Apple employees joined in the hype chanting "iPhone 5!" as the store opened its gates. Buyers rushed in, eager to get their new phones and try them out. One iPhone lover says it was worth taking time off work. [Leo, iPhone 5 Customer] "Because it is a very good product. And I already took a half day (off), to get this iPhone." Outside the store, thrifty buyers sold their new phones to those who hadn't preordered -- at a marked up price. It didn't last long though, as only two phones can be bought per person. One iPhone owner says hers is not for sale. [iPhone 5 Customer] "I won't (sell it). I will use it myself because I'm an Apple fan, ok?" More than 2 million people preordered on the first day, double the number last year's iPhone 4 release. But, according to analyst firm Forrester, an unbelievable 70% of the iPhones and iPads bought in Hong Kong this year will be smuggled goods. Wang Lijun's Unmentioned Crimes

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 02:17 PM PDT

It seems a foregone conclusion that Wang Lijun will be found guilty next week of the four charges laid against. The former police chief of Chongqing is accused of defection, bending the law for personal gains, abuse of power and bribe taking. Analysts say, however, that there is more to Wang's crimes. Human rights groups have alleged that Wang has been involved in the Chinese regime's persecution of the Falun Gong spiritual practice, in particular, the illegal harvesting of their organs for transplant. Senior China analyst, Heng He, says there have been other accusations against him, too. [Heng He, NTD Senior China Analyst] "First, Wang Lijun set up the On-Site Psychology Research Center in Jinzhou, and oversaw thousands of organ transplants which is likely linked to the live organ harvesting of Falun Gong practitioners. Secondly, during his crack down on crime in Chongqing, he's suspected of using torture, even to death, resulting in many tragic cases. Thirdly, a witness has alleged that Wang raped several female officers under his rank. Any of these three allegations are more serious than the current ones, but none have been mentioned." After Wang fled to a US Consulate in February, rumors surfaced that he had given details of organ harvesting to US officials. He also reportedly gave details about a plot by Bo Xilai and Chinese security chief Zhou Yongkang to disrupt the succession plans of upcoming leader Xi Jinping. Publicly, Wang's case has only been tied to the ...

"In the Shadow of the Horse" Premiers in Prague

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 02:11 PM PDT

The new Czech film "In the Shadow of the Horse" premiered on September 13th in Prague. The film has an investigative plot set in former communist Czecheslovakia. It shows the fight of one man who tries to find truth among rampant corruption. Celebrated filmmakers, producers, and actors walk the red carpet at the opening ceremony. The ceremony celebrates the premier Ve Stinu, the film's Czech name. Among them are the film's director, David Ondricek, and male lead Ivan Trojan. Trojan says he hopes the film will show that human life is more important than trade. [Ivan Trojan, Actor]: "We have now been informed from the high places that trade is more important than human rights. So I'd like this film to show we think otherwise." Trojan repeated this hope in front of the packed auditorium. His statement is most likely in response to a recent comment by Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas. At the International Engineering Fair, Necas stated that supporting the Dalai Lama or the Russian band "Pussy Riot" is bad for Czech exports. "In the Shadow of the Horse" reveals the monstrosity of totalitarian rule. The movie is set in Prague in the 1950's and shows one man's losing battle to find justice under a corrupt regime. [Michal Lukes, National Museum General Manager]:(male, Czech) "It's one of the big mementos dedicated to the 1950's. It shows a harsh reality of the horrors of that time." The film is a powerful detective story about searching for the truth without compromise. It also ...

China Launches Naval Drills In East China Sea

Wang Lijun To be Sentenced Next Monday

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 01:40 PM PDT

Chongqing's former police chief Wang Lijun will be sentenced next Monday, Reuters has reported, citing a court official from the city of Chengdu. Wang was tried over two days last week at the Chengdu People's Intermediate Court. During an unannounced secret hearing last Monday, the court heard Wang's charges of defection and abuse of power for illegal wire-tapping. The next day, Wang was tried for bribe-taking and covering up of the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood by Gu Kailai, the wife of Wang's former boss Bo Xilai. Foreign reporters were kept outside the court during the purported public proceedings. It's expected that Wang will be found guilty next Monday. State-run Xinhua reported after the trial that he did not contest any of the charges. Following the trial and conviction of Gu Kailai in August for Heywood's murder, analysts see the proceedings against Wang as another choreographed affair, designed to carefully control the detail and extent of exposure of Wang's crimes. Space Shuttle Endeavour Lands in California

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 01:22 PM PDT

NASA's space shuttle Endeavour lands at the Dryden Flight Research Center in California, for the final leg of its westward journey from Florida to the California Science Center. Full Story: The space shuttle Endeavour landed at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center in California on Thursday, after being carried atop a Boeing 747. The Dryden Flight Research Center is located at Edwards Air Force Base in Mojave Desert, north of Los Angeles. The Edwards Air Force Base was originally the main landing site for NASA's shuttle program, before the space agency built a landing facility for the orbiters at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Edwards then became the main backup landing site for the shuttle program, in case of bad weather at Cape Canaveral. Endeavour is scheduled to take off again for its final ferry flight to Los Angeles International Airport on Friday (September 21). The spacecraft will then undergo preparations to be moved 12 miles (19km) through city streets from the airport to its permanent home at the California Science Center in downtown Los Angeles. This is where the shuttle will be put on public display starting on the 30th of October. Endeavour has flown 25 missions in space and logged nearly 123 million miles (198 million km) in flight during 4671 orbits. It was added to the shuttle fleet after the shuttle Challenger was destroyed by an accidental explosion that killed seven astronauts in 1986. Wozniak, seventh in the queue for the new phone, is not concerned by the competition. [Steve Wozniak, Apple Co-Founder]: "I don't look at it as a comparison contest. No one product going to have all the good features in the world. It's my favorite, I want it to be the greatest in the world. I want it to have some of the good features those other phones have." Some analysts expect Apple to sell up to 10 million iPhone 5s in the remaining days of September. The iPhone 5 supports the faster 4G network, and also comes with a number of software updates.
