Ginseng market booms-Price Watch August 21-BONTV

Recently there's been an explosion in prices for centuries-old wild ginseng that grows in northern China. The Guangzhou Daily reports that on August 7th, the first collectable ginseng auction was held in Beijing. The auction saw a total turnover of $3.42 million, with one 325-year-old plant smashing the record for most expensive ounce of ginseng sold. The previous record was set in May at $472000, but the August sale pushed that up to $1.57 million. A 95-year-old plant sold for $629000, while a 115-year-old piece of ginseng went for almost a million dollars.

Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode Gu Kailai as she's normally known is the wife of disgraced former top politician Bo Xilai. She has been found guilty of the murder of a British businessman and given a suspended death sentence. Essentially this means that if she does not reoffend within two years the sentence is commuted, usually to life in prison. On August 9, Gu admitted to poisoning a sometime associate of the family, Neil Heywood. She claimed that he had threatened her son, Bo Guagua, who studies abroad in the UK and the US over a business deal. A spokesman for the court in Hefei city said it found Heywood HAD made threats but never acted on them and said Gu's actions showed she suffered from "psychological problems". The court also sentenced a family aide, Zhang Xiaojun, to nine years in prison as an accomplice to murder. Gu was reported to have said "The verdict is just and reflects a special respect toward the law, reality and life." Her husband Bo Xilai, who is currently under internal party investigation, has not been seen since March.
