Slave labor, forced abortion and live organ harvesting in China. These issues were brought to light at the Canadian premier of "Free China: The Courage to Believe" in Ottawa over the weekend. The award winning documentary film reveals the ordeal of two former prisoners of conscience in China. Both are practitioners of Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline the Chinese regime has been persecuting since1999. After seeing the film, the Executive Director of the Ottawa International Film Festival, Nina Bains said she wanted it to premier in Ottawa. She was inspired by Jennifer Zeng—featured in the film—who chose to tell her story despite going through severe persecution. [Nina Bains, Executive Director of Ottawa International Film Festival] "I could not even imagine having three years...For three years being separated from my child, and needing to run away from my family in order to save my own life, in order to be free, in order to give my children a free life...Jennifer has so much strength." Also featured in the documentary is the Honorable David Kilgour, Former Canadian Secretary of State for the Asia Pacific region. He and Canadian human rights lawyer David Matas co-authored an investigative report that exposes state-sanctioned organ harvesting from live Falun Gong practitioners. Costa Concordia Disaster Tourism

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 06:50 PM PDT

The site of the Costa Concordia disaster, where the cruise ship ran aground and 32 people died, has become a grim tourist destination. Those travelling to the Isola del Giglio now have the added option of passing by the wreckage of the cruise liner, still lying on its side over seven months after it hit a reef by the Tuscan coast. A boat trip only costs 10 euro per ticket. [Suzana Bina, Tourist]: "Today we have decided to take a trip to Giglio for the day to take my nephew to see one of the biggest tragedies of modern times, above all because it made a huge impression on him not just the tragedy but also how people behaved about it." The Captain of the ship, Francesco Schettino, has been charged with manslaughter and causing the shipwreck, along with abandoning the ship before the 4200 passengers and crew could get off. Some of the visitors noted the macabre nature of the site. A British tourist, Peter Davey, was asked if he would take photographs of the wreck. [Peter Davey, Tourist]: "No, no, no I don't think so, I think where people die is not really something to glorify." US company Titan Salvage, along with the Italian partner Micoperi, have been hired to recover the 114500 tonne ship. Due to the sheer size of the task. they recently had to push back their timeline, with the job now expected to be completed in the spring of 2013. Full story: Seven northern cheetah cubs made their public debut during a photo call at Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire, north of London, on Wednesday. The septuplets were born around twelve weeks ago, and seemed to enjoy their first outing by frolicking and chasing one another around the cheetah enclosure. For mother Dubai it's the second litter, after she gave birth to five cubs in 2010. Only three litters have ever been produced in a UK zoo, and soon enough Dubai's cubs will be playing a vital role in the survival of their species. [Marie Brown, Deputy Team Leader, Whipsnade Zoo]: "Northern cheetahs are extremely rare, rumoured to be less than 250 in the wild so we're very excited for her to breed for a second time. She's (Dubai) bred once before. She had five cubs with her first litter, which was a couple of years ago, which was the first northern cheetahs to be born in the country so we're very excited that she's produced again and this time instead of five she's gone to seven so we're very pleased with that." The cubs are part of the zoo's European Endangered Species Programme which aims to increase the population of endangered animal species. While they will be staying with mum Dubai for the next eighteen months, Brown says they will eventually be transferred to other European zoos to take part in breeding programmes. 'Heaven's Tears For This Family'

Posted: 30 Aug 2012 12:18 AM PDT

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com In mainland China, the CCP's (China's Communist Party) brutal persecution results in destroying many happy families. 'Heaven's Tears for this Family' is one of the recent themes on the Falun Gong's website Minghui.org. It reported again about the miserable experience of Yang Lijuan's family from Liaoning, Tieling. In 1996, Falun Dafa (Falun Gong) spread to Dadianzi town, Tieling county, Liaoning province. All six members of Yang Lijuan's family started to practice Falun Dafa cultivation. After her two sons Dong Qinyu and Dong Qinfei began practicing Falun Dafa, their health issues were quickly gone. Her daughter-in-law, Gao Jie had a brain tumor, and was also healed by practicing Falun Dafa. However, in July 1999, the CCP started its suppression of Falun Gong, and the heaven seems to cry about this family. Currently, the 65-year-old Yang Lijuan has to take care of the grandchildren, to farm, and also to take care of her daughter-in-law, Gao Jie, who is paralyzed. The brothers Qinyu and Qinfei, and the wife, benefiting all mentally and physically from Falun Dafa, went to Beijing to petition and clarify the truth about Falun Gong. However, they were accused of 'disturbing the social order' and were illegally sent to a labor camp. Falun Dafa's Minghui.org reported about them, that so far they haven't been home for 13 years for the New Year. During these 13 years, what kind of persecution did they ...

This has angered many and she has been denounced by some as a, "traitor." Japan Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda wrote to President Hu Jintao, calling for stable relations between the two countries. Diaoyudao protesters indicated that to defend Diaoyu Islands is to defend its sovereignty and uphold international law.
