Are We Really Facing "Death by China"?

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 12:19 PM PDT

"Death by China" director Peter Navarro talks about why he thinks the US-China relationship is broken, and what he thinks we should do about it. The documentary "Death by China" argues that the unbalanced economic relationship between the US and China is the most urgent problem facing the US today. The film has been controversial, with reviews calling it "heavy-handed" and "agitprop," though few have argued that the fundamentals of what the film portrays are wrong. Though it highlights issues in China such as pollution, human rights abuses, and toxic products, which is it careful to blame on Chinese authorities and not the Chinese people, the film also portrays the US government and multinational corporations as part of the problem. On China Focus, we sit down with "Death by China" director Peter Navarro to talk about why he says the US-China relationship is broken, and how he plans to make trade reform with China a key issue in the upcoming US presidential elections. Is the US really facing death by China? And if so, what can people do about it?

Sam Claflin Signs On To "Hunger Games: Catching Fire"

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 08:27 AM PDT

British actor Sam Claflin secures the coveted role of Finnick Odair in the upcoming "Hunger Games" sequel, "Catching Fire." Full Story: British actor Sam Claflin has been cast in the role of Finnick Odair in the upcoming highly anticipated sequel to "The Hunger Games". Rising to fame in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," Claflin went on to star in "Snow White and the Huntsman." Securing the role in "Hunger Games: Catching Fire" is sure to skyrocket his reputation, just as happened with Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth in the first "Hunger Games" movie. Much internet speculation preceded the announcement, with a slew of young actors all clamoring to claim the coveted role. Playing the character of Finnick Odair will be a fresh challenge for Claflin: as a former Hunger Games victor, Finnick is both charismatic and manipulative. His uneasy alliance with character Katniss Everdeen forms an intriguing theme of the movie. "Hunger Games: Catching Fire" is set to open November 22, 2013.

Annual Weigh in at London Zoo Looks Like a Lot of Fun

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 10:46 PM PDT

London Zoo's annual weigh-in of all creatures great and small began on Wednesday August 22. A variety of animals, birds and insects were herded onto scales as part of the yearly event. The more playful creatures see it as great fun. At Penguin Beach, Pickle a young Humbolt penguin does the right thing, but his friends saw a chance for a good time. For keeper Angela Ryan there's a serious side. [Angela Ryan, Zoo Keeper]: (english, female) "As keepers its really important because some animals, especially the ones you can't really get close to, you can't see their condition that well, for example something covered in feathers or something covered in fur, or coat, like the Llamas you can't always see the condition that they are in so by weighing them, we know where we are with them." Keepers are concerned if their charges put on too much weight. Their weight might also indicate pregnancy. For other animals, it's the length and height of them that counts more than weight. How about trying to measure an African millipede, best guess is a tad under 10 inches. The height of giraffes is easy to measure, all that's needed is a nice fresh bunch of leaves. But Ryan says the tricky meerkats are a different story. [Angela Ryan, Zoo Keeper]: (english, female) "You've got lots of them at once and you've got to get them there one at a time and they all want to be there at the same time. We try and keep it positive so they've got a little reward for coming on there which makes it a really ...

China News - August 22, 2012: Disputed Islands in the East China Sea

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 04:46 PM PDT

In today's China news, a boat carrying seven Chinese activists returned to Hong Kong after it sailed to disputed islands in the East China Sea. China knows the uninhabited isles as the Diaoyu Islands, the Japanese as the Senkaku Islands, and the Taiwanese as the Tiaoyutai On Monday, Taiwanese president Ma Ying-joeh spoke with Japanese media about the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu/Tiaoyutai Islands in the East China Sea. On Tuesday, the Foreign Correspondents' Club of China, along with the FCC's of Hong Kong and Shanghai, released a statement saying they were (quote) "extremely concerned" over incidents of foreign journalists being "threatened, harassed, or even beaten" while reporting in China. Over the last two weeks, two news stories have really captured the attention of Chinese netizens. One was of course the trial and verdict of Gu Kailai. The other is the shooting death of fugitive Zhou Kehua. Workers at Foxconn in Shenzhen China jokingly called the factory that produces iPhones and iPads, "Mordor." After 14 workers committed suicide by leaping off the building, the factory fell under scrutiny for abusing workers. Now, the factory has put improvements in place, but not all workers are happy about the changes. Back in the middle of June, local media in Tibet announced plans for a touring company to conduct boat tours on Yamdrok Lake in southern Tibet. Chinese Activists Return from Disputed Islands

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 03:25 PM PDT

A boat carrying seven Chinese activists returned to Hong Kong today (August 21) after it sailed to disputed islands in the East China Sea. These islands are known as the Senkaku in Japan, Diaoyu in China, and Tiaoyutai in Taiwan. China and Japan have had a decades-long dispute over the island chain, which is near potentially huge maritime c. The boat that returned to Hong Kong today was in the center of a diplomatic storm last week when it carried fourteen Chinese activists to the islands. Seven of those on board slipped past Japan's Coast Guard to land on one of the uninhabited isles. Footage shot today by Hong Kong broadcaster ATV shows officials from the immigration department talking with crew members on the boat. Japanese coast guards had detained all 14 people - including two Chinese television journalists - before releasing them last Friday. Yamdrok Lake Saved by Social Media

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 03:19 PM PDT

Back in the middle of June, local media in Tibet announced plans for a touring company to conduct boat tours on Yamdrok Lake in southern Tibet. While boat tours sound attractive to tourists, it's a different story for the locals. Tibetans consider all of their lakes to be holy, and Yamdrok Lake even more so. It's one of the three holy lakes where Tibetan Buddhists traditionally believe the reincarnation of their next Buddhist leader is revealed. So plans for turning a holy site into a boating attraction didn't go over well. According to environmentalist website Chinadialogue.net, two activists picked up the story the day it was published in June. They immediately started a campaign called "Save Yamdrok Lake" on Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter. According to Chinadialogue.net, three days later, a private message from Weibo user @TibetDaily sent a message to @SaveYamdrokLake. It said, "We are reporting in our morning paper that this project has already been suspended." While the Save Yamdrok Lake campaign can rest in the short term, chinadialogue.net says the public is skeptical whether the lake will stay clear of boats in the long term. Video May Show Earhart's Plane Wreckage

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 03:14 PM PDT

Researchers who have been investigating Amelia Earhart's fate some 75 years after the famed aviator disappeared, believe they may have discovered the wreckage of her airplane near a remote island in the Pacific. Videotape of an underwater debris field found by researchers near the island of Nikumaroro was shown in a recent Discovery Channel TV special called "Finding Amelia Earhart: Mystery Solved?" During the search near Nikumaroro in July, high-tech equipment was used to scan the bottom of the ocean and hours of high-definition video footage was recorded. When the video of the debris field was closely examined by researchers later, it showed man-made objects on the reef slope off the west end of Nikumaroro which might include some remnants of Earhart's plane. Researchers from The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery - or TIGHAR - theorize that Earhart and Noonan made an emergency landing on Nikumaroro, then called Gardner Island, about 400 miles southeast of their destination on Howland. Earhart and Noonan were last seen taking off in her twin-engine Lockheed Electra on July 2, 1937, from Papua New Guinea en route to tiny Howland Island, some 2500 miles away in the central Pacific. Radio contact with her plane was lost hours later after she reported running low on fuel. A massive air-and-sea search, the most extensive such US operation at that time, was unsuccessful. Earhart's plane was presumed to have gone down, but it has never been known whether she ...

Wealth Gap Increasing in Rural China

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 02:33 PM PDT

The gap between the rich and poor in rural China is increasing, according to a report released on Tuesday by Central China Normal University. The Gini index measures the rich-poor gap. The report says the gap in rural China is about 0.39. The higher the number, the greater the inequality, with the danger zone being 0.4 or greater, according to the United Nations. However, the income of rural households is growing, according to a survey conducted by the University's Center for China Rural Studies. The amount of cash income is now up to about $6000, or 39000 yuan, up 14 percent from a year earlier. But it's not that farmers are getting paid more for their crops—most of those contributing to the income growth are migrant workers in big cities, who have left their rural lives behind. The Central China Normal University survey found that 65 percent of rural households got their income through migrant labor, and there is a bigger wealth gap in the west of China, compared to the east. Official data says that there were 253 million migrant workers by the end of 2011, up more than 10 million from a year earlier. The last time China published Gini index data was back in 2000, when it was at 0.412. For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me

Netizens Continue to Doubt Police Shooting of Serial Killer

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 02:21 PM PDT

Last Tuesday, police in China's southwestern mega-city, Chongqing, shot dead a fugitive named Zhou Kehua. This followed a massive man hunt and was supposed to close the books on case of the bank robber and serial killer. Almost as soon as the news broke however, Chinese netizens began questioning the official version of events. First, some asked why Zhou's face was never shown in officially released pictures—leading some to wonder whether the man shot dead was who police claimed he was. Others compared the deceased body to the official descriptions given by the Chongqing police during the manhunt, which said Zhou was of slim built. Then, this Monday, unofficial photos of Zhou's body appeared online. They did not come from the police, but appear to have been leaked by a netizen. The pictures were meant to show the deceased person was indeed Zhou Kehua. But, the pictures raised new questions, like: why do the ears and nose appear different between the post mortem photo and Zhou's mug shot, and also why there was no exit wound on the corpse's head. Police later confirmed the pictures were of Zhou. Some netizens went as far to question whether the man shot dead was another policeman in plain clothes. Whether or not the deceased in question was the fugitive, the swirling online rumors show how many Chinese netizens question official accounts. Chinese dissident writer Jing Chu says this case is the latest example of the widespread distrust of authorities amongst the Chinese ...

Audit Shows Foxconn Improving Working Conditions

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 02:13 PM PDT

Workers at Foxconn in Shenzhen China jokingly called the factory that produces iPhones and iPads, "Mordor." After 14 workers committed suicide by leaping off the building, the factory fell under scrutiny for abusing workers. Some accused Apple of building its fortune on the backs of mistreated Chinese workers. But according to a recent report by auditors hired by Apple Inc. and Foxconn, things are changing. First, safety nets were put up to prevent successful suicide jumps. Then slightly more proactive measures were taken—wages went up, overtime hours were cut. But for many of the migrant workers who come to Shenzhen to make as much money as possible in the shortest amount of time possible, the cuts in overtime are not being well received. [Geoffrey Crothal, China Labor Bulletin Communications Director]: "Workers will only want less overtime if the basic pay they are getting is sufficient to work within the mandated overtime hours. But if they can only get a decent wage by working what we might call excessive overtime, then that's what they're going to have to do. So it'll really depend on the basic pay and what benefits that Foxconn provides." Workers are still clocking up on average 60 hours of overtime a week, more than 20% the legal limit. Foxconn now says it will cut that to less than nine hours a week. [Ting Lu, China Economist, Bank of America-Merrily Lynch]: "If China's workers' quality and education and skills could be really improved and productivity in China is ...
